Winning Back My Genius Wife And Triplets Chapter 1

"Mrs. Barnett, you were magnificent. Triplets, two boys and a girl, and they're all perfectly healthy."

The nurse's voice was a gentle hum beside her. Anesthesia was a slow, receding tide, leaving behind a shore of pain. Every muscle in Alicia Barnett's body screamed as if it had been torn apart and clumsily stitched back together. A truck, she thought. It feels like I was hit by a truck.

But the pain was a distant thing.

A new feeling, overwhelming and fierce, filled the space inside her. It was a tenderness so profound it made her chest ache.

She turned her head, the movement a colossal effort.

There they were. Lined up in a row inside their clear plastic bassinets. Two tiny, perfect forms, swaddled in white blankets. So small. Like kittens. Her heart didn't just melt; it dissolved into a warm, liquid pool.

Her babies.

A weak but radiant smile touched her lips. They were dry and cracked.

"My husband... Barron," she rasped, her voice unfamiliar. "Has he been here? Has he seen them?"

Barron Rivera was a self-made tech and finance magnate, the formidable CEO of Rivera Enterprises. Known in the business world for being ruthless and decisive, he was one of the most influential and feared figures in Seacrest City. Their marriage had always been a quiet, somewhat distant arrangement lacking in real warmth, but surely the birth of their children would change things.

The nurse, Sarah Miller, a kind woman with warm eyes, hesitated for a fraction of a second. A flicker of something—pity?—crossed her face before she smoothed it away.

"Mr. Rivera is likely handling urgent business," she said, her tone a little too bright. "I'm sure he'll be here soon."

Just then, a soft knock sounded at the door.

Alicia's eyes lit up. Hope surged, a painful, beautiful thing. Barron. He was here.

The door swung open.

It wasn't him.

The man who entered was not her tall, handsome husband. He was a stranger in a perfectly tailored Armani suit, his face a mask of detached professionalism. Gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, reflecting the cold, sterile light of the VIP room.

He gave a slight, impersonal nod. "Mrs. Barnett. My name is Mark Reynolds. I'm Mr. Rivera's executive assistant."

The warmth inside Alicia instantly chilled. She tried to push herself up, a wave of nausea and pain washing over her.

"Please, don't get up," Mark said, his voice polite but firm, stopping her with a gesture. "I'm only here to deliver a few instructions from Mr. Rivera."

From his leather briefcase, he produced a thick manila envelope. He placed it on the bedside table with a precise, quiet thud. The sound echoed in the silent room, loud as a gunshot.

A knot of ice formed in Alicia's stomach. She stared at the envelope as if it were a coiled snake.

"Mr. Rivera requests that you sign these documents," Mark stated, his tone devoid of any emotion. "It's a divorce agreement."

Divorce. Agreement.

The words didn't make sense. The room began to spin, a high-pitched ringing in her ears. She had just given him two children.

Her head snapped toward the bassinets, tears instantly blurring the perfect, tiny faces. Her voice trembled, thick with disbelief. "Why? We... we've only been married a year."

Mark pushed his glasses up his nose. "The agreement provides a detailed explanation. Mr. Rivera has been exceptionally generous with the compensation."

He listed the terms like a grocery list.

"A villa in Beverly Hills, five million dollars in cash, and a new Bentley."

The cold numbers were like knives, slicing into her. She wasn't a commodity. She was his wife.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head, tears streaming down her temples and soaking into the pillow. "I don't want the money. I don't want a divorce. What about the children? They were just born."

For the first time, a flicker of impatience crossed Mark's face. "Regarding custody of the children, Mr. Rivera will assume full responsibility. They are the heirs to the Rivera family and will receive the best possible care."

That sentence shattered her.

He wasn't just leaving her. He was taking her babies.

A guttural sound escaped her throat. She threw back the blanket, ignoring the searing pain, and tried to get out of bed. Her legs gave way, and she crumpled to the cold, hard floor.

"Oh my God!" Nurse Sarah shrieked, rushing to her side. She glared at Mark. "Can't you see she's a patient? Get out, you monster! Get out!"

Mark frowned, disgusted by the emotional outburst. He took a step back, adjusting his tie.

He looked down at Alicia, a heap of broken dreams on the floor.

"Mr. Rivera has given you one week to consider," he said, his voice a blade of ice. "After that, he expects to see the signed documents. Otherwise, he will proceed with legal action."

He turned and walked out, closing the door softly behind him, as if he had just delivered a package.

The room was silent again, except for Alicia's ragged breaths. Her gaze fell on the manila envelope.

With a trembling hand, she reached for it, her fingers fumbling with the clasp. She pulled out the sheaf of cold, heavy paper. Her eyes scanned the pages, the legal jargon a blur, until they landed on the section detailing asset distribution.

A trust fund of considerable value was to be transferred upon the finalization of the divorce.

The beneficiary: Destiny Barnett.

Alicia's pupils constricted. Destiny. Behind the facade of a frail, leukemia-stricken artist with big, innocent eyes, her cousin was a ruthless, calculating social climber who had spent years perfecting her tragic act.

It all clicked into place. Barron's coldness over the past six months. The late nights at the office. The fleeting, secretive messages on his phone from Destiny. His utter indifference toward her and the countless nights he hadn't even bothered coming home were all because he had been entangled in a secret, illicit affair with her own cousin.

A chill, colder than the hospital floor, shot up her spine. It wasn't her imagination.

From one of the bassinets, a baby started to cry, a soft, mewling sound that pierced through her despair.

The sound was an anchor.

She looked up, her face streaked with tears. She wiped them away with the back of her hand. Her expression shifted, the shattered heartbreak slowly hardening into something brittle and sharp.

For her children, she could not fall.

The naive, hopeful woman who had loved him was dead, killed by the stroke of his pen. In her place rose a fierce, unyielding mother.

She shook her head at the worried nurse, pushed herself up with a groan, and crawled back onto the bed. She would survive this. And one day, she swore, she would make everyone who had conspired to hurt her and tear her family apart pay a devastating price.

Her eyes, now dry and burning, were fixed on the divorce papers.
