While I Gave Birth, My Husband Married His Mistress Chapter 1

The plastic chair was cold beneath my legs.

The air in the Social Services office smelled like burnt coffee and wet umbrellas. I gripped the strap of my faded purse. In my pocket was my daughter Lily’s paperwork. She was seven years old, sick, and running out of time. Her medical bills were piling up faster than my husband could earn on the road.

The clerk behind the glass partition had dark bags under her eyes. She reached through the opening. "Photo of the father for the dependent verification, please."

"Of course," I said.

I unlocked my cracked phone. I pulled up a clear picture of Danny. He was wearing his blue flannel work shirt, smiling softly at the camera with a small smear of grease on his cheek. Danny was a long-haul truck driver. He drove through the night just so we could afford Lily’s dialysis.

The clerk held the phone up to a scanner. She tapped her keyboard. Once. Twice.

Her typing slowed down. Then it stopped completely.

She stared at her monitor. Her eyes widened. She glanced from the screen to me, then back to the screen.

"Ma'am," she said, her voice dropping. "What did you say your husband’s name was?"

"Danny Pierce," I said, a knot tightening in my stomach. "Is there a problem with his social?"

"There is no Danny Pierce in the federal database," she said. She turned the monitor slightly. "The facial recognition hit an exact match. But his name isn’t Danny. It’s Dariel Pierce. CEO of Pierce Capital."

I blinked at her. A low buzz started in my ears. "That's... that's impossible. He drives a rig. We live in a rear servant's room on 72nd Street. He works for his brother-in-law."

"The system doesn't lie, honey," she whispered, looking at me with pity. "He’s a billionaire. And according to state records, his legal wife is Nylah Garza. Married seven years ago."

"Check it again," I begged. My voice sounded thin, like dry paper. "Please. Just run the face again."

She ran it again. The same face appeared on her screen. Dariel Pierce.

I don't remember walking out of the building.

My legs carried me onto the sidewalk, but I couldn't feel my feet touching the pavement. The New York wind hit my face, cold and sharp, but I was burning from the inside out. My phone screen stayed lit in my palm. The name *Dariel Pierce* seemed to burn through the glass.

I hailed a cab I couldn't afford.

Twenty minutes later, I took the service elevator up to the penthouse. The vast apartment was silent. The marble floors gleamed under the chandeliers. For years, Danny told me his wealthy brother-in-law let us stay in the small maid's room out of charity. He said we had to stay out of the main rooms and keep Lily quiet.

I walked straight past the servant's quarters. I went into the private study.

The desk was heavy mahogany. The bottom drawer was locked. It had always been locked. *Important logistics paperwork for the trucks,* Danny had always told me. *Don't touch it, Kara.*

I went to the kitchen, grabbed a paring knife, and ran back.

I jammed the tip into the lock. I twisted it with both hands, using all my weight, until the brass latch gave a loud *crack*. The drawer popped open.

Inside lay a thick leather binder. I opened it.

On top was an official document. A marriage certificate.

*Husband: Dariel Pierce. Wife: Kara Thompson.*

My hands shook so violently the paper rattled. I sat back on my heels, breathing hard. I opened my phone and typed two names into the search bar: *Dariel Pierce Nylah Garza.*

Hundreds of search results popped up. I tapped the first link. It was a Vanity Fair archive from seven years ago.

There was a photo. Dariel stood in the grand ballroom of The Plaza. He wore a custom black tuxedo, holding a flute of champagne, smiling down at a woman draped in white silk. Nylah Garza.

The date stamped under the photo was October 14th.

The room seemed to tilt sideways.

On October 14th, I had spent nineteen hours laboring alone in a noisy county hospital bed. The nurses had held my hands while I screamed for Danny. He had texted me that his truck had broken down in Pennsylvania in a blizzard.

He hadn't been in Pennsylvania. He was across town, toasting champagne at his real wedding.

Eight years. Every sacrifice. Every night I skipped dinner so Lily could have her medication. It had all been a joke.

I dragged myself to the servant's room and collapsed against the door. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my silver wedding band, pressing down until the edge bit deep into my flesh, leaving a jagged red circle. The physical pain was the only thing keeping me from screaming.

*Think, Kara,* I told myself. *Look at Lily.*

I crawled to the bed and reached underneath. I pulled out an old shoebox filled with Lily's drawings. Hidden at the bottom was my small spiral notebook. For eight years, I had written down every clinic visit, every pill, every doctor's name. It was my record of love.

Now, my eyes scanned the pages with cold clarity.

Three years ago. Lily had undergone what the private surgeon called "emergency exploratory surgery" for her failing kidneys. I had spent six hours praying on the cold linoleum floor of the clinic.

I looked at the notes. No hospital record number. The surgeon, Dr. Raymond Chu, had been paid in private cashier checks. There was no trace of an infection or trauma in Lily's chart. Nothing made medical sense.

My heart went icy.

That evening, I heard the elevator chime.

I stepped into the shadows of the pantry and watched.

Two maids hurried to the front foyer, bowing their heads respectfully. Nylah Garza walked through the double doors. She wore a tailored cream coat. She tossed her leather gloves onto the console table without looking.

For months, Dariel had told me Nylah was just a distant relative staying in the guest suite during her business trips.

Now, I saw the truth. Nylah didn't act like a guest. She walked through the penthouse like someone who owned every inch of the marble.

Dariel walked in behind her. He wore a dark navy suit. He walked straight to the bar, poured two glasses of red wine, and handed one to Nylah. She took it without saying thank you. They exchanged a look—a comfortable, practiced look shared between two people who lived together every single day.

My stomach churned. Bile rose in my throat, but I forced it down.

I turned around quietly. I measured Lily's evening drops into a small cup. I carried it into our tiny room, helped Lily swallow the medicine, and pulled the thin blanket over her small shoulders.

"Mama?" Lily whispered, her voice sleepy. "Is Daddy home?"

I smoothed her dark hair. My hand didn't shake.

"Go to sleep, sweet girl," I whispered.

I looked back out toward the bright living room. The weeping was over. The game had just begun.
