When She Came, the Wedding Feast Was Over Chapter 1

At Grandpa Clark Henson's eightieth birthday banquet, the old man slid the signet ring off his thumb.

Gold bone wound around jade, nine coils in all.

By the Henson family's rules, this ring passed only to the granddaughter's husband.

Every gaze in the room turned toward me, knowing, egging us on.

"Seven years now, it's time to put it on Derek Sawyer!"

"Once he's wearing the ring, he's family!"

Molly Henson was nudged forward until she stood right in front of me.

I held out my right hand, my whole face bright with joy, waiting for her to slip it on.

Instead she took the ring and turned to pass it to the assistant at her side.

"Henry's got slim fingers. He can hold it for Grandpa for now."

She reached up and straightened my collar. "What's the rush? It'll be yours sooner or later."

Through the laughter that filled the hall, I watched that young man cradle the little brocade box, flustered by the honor of it.

Molly didn't know there was no time left.

Three days from now, the jade belt at my waist would belong to another family.

...

Under the table, Grandpa's hand settled on my knee.

Two light pats.

I didn't move, only reached over to fill his tea for him,

and nodded to let him know I was fine.

An eighty-year-old birthday celebrant, an elder of the Hensons, could not throw down his chopsticks at his own banquet.

He could hold it in.

So could I.

A few steps away, Henry Winfield hugged the brocade box to his chest.

The eyes of every relative at the table pinned him where he stood, yet he showed no trace of nerves.

He gave a slight bow, his voice clear and easy.

"I'll keep it safe for Grandpa."

Comfortable as if he were half the master of this house.

Molly had already picked up her glass and was going down the line, toasting her uncles one by one.

That burst of egging on just now was like a gust of wind that blew past and scattered.

Only I knew that where the wind had passed, something had broken.

Before the longevity noodles were served, custom called for a family photo.

The photographer waved everyone into place, the elders at the center, children and grandchildren fanning out to either side.

When it came to me, he paused with the camera raised.

"Is this gentleman... family, or one of the help?"

The courtyard went quiet for a second.

Molly was about to speak when she heard my calm voice.

"A friend."

Two words, enunciated cleanly.

Just the way she had taught me these past few years.

"Derek, until we've signed the papers, you're my friend."

"Friends stand off to the side."

The photographer let out a breath and shifted me to the far edge.

Henry caught the crease forming in Molly's brow and, sharp-eyed, snatched up the spare camera.

"Let me grab a few extra shots of everyone!"

He swung the lens around and waved me off first. "Derek, you're tall, scoot out a little, you're blocking the dog."

Before the cake was cut, Grandpa asked me to go with her to light incense.

The family chapel was hushed, a single thread of sandalwood smoke rising.

"This ring."

The old man planted three sticks of incense in the burner.

"My great-grandfather had it made by a craftsman from the imperial palace. Gold bone wound around jade, nine coils, each one to keep a person safe."

"I put it on the year I turned eighteen."

He opened his right hand and held it out in front of me.

At the base of his thumb, a ring of skin worn pale had pressed a deep groove into the flesh.

"Sixty-two years. Never off my hand."

"Seven years ago, it was here too."

Grandpa gazed at the ancestral tablets, his voice unhurried.

"Molly lit the incense and said within three years she'd bring you into the Henson family."

"The ancestors heard it."

"And I've been keeping count for you too."

A length of incense ash dropped away without a sound.

"Derek." He turned his head to look at me. "You've had a hard time of it."

"It hasn't been hard."

The instant those words left my mouth, I heard something inside me split, quietly, along a single line.

The banquet broke up, and the guest Douglas Sawyer headed for the door.

Molly stood at the foot of the steps, arranging the cars.
