When My Husband’s Mistress Tried to Auction Me Chapter 1

My birthday dinner was supposed to start at eight. At six thirty, Axel texted me. *Reshoot ran long. Order without me, babe.* I read it twice, sitting on our bed in the dress I'd bought just for tonight. Five years married to a photographer teaches you things. It teaches you that light doesn't wait, that clients get difficult, that sometimes love means eating cake alone at your own kitchen island.

I told myself it was fine. I told myself a lot of things back then.

Our loft took up the whole top floor of an old factory building in Tribeca, all exposed brick and steel windows. Axel's studio was at the end of the hall, behind a door he always kept locked. I had a key. He'd given it to me the year we got married, said, "You're the only person I trust in here." I used to think that meant something.

I told myself I was looking for a birthday surprise. Maybe a print he'd made for me, hidden away, something sentimental for once. That's what I told myself when I turned the key.

The studio was dark except for the glow of his editing monitor, still awake, still logged in. An external hard drive sat plugged into the tower, unlocked. I touched the mouse just to see the time. That's all I meant to do.

A folder opened instead. Briella Ryan, the name read.

I don't know how long I sat there. The chair was cold through my dress. Photograph after photograph loaded onto the screen — Briella wrapped in white sheets, Briella's spine curved in low golden light, Briella looking at the camera like it was a lover and not a lens. Nude. Half-dressed. Radiant. Every frame lit like a confession.

I counted them. Eight hundred and forty-seven. I recognized the beach house from three summers ago, where Axel and I had gone for our anniversary. I recognized the hotel room I'd once booked myself, thinking it was for a client shoot. The last photo was dated four days ago.

In five years, my husband had never once pointed his camera at my face.

My hands did not shake when I closed the folder. They should have. Instead, something in me went quiet and still, like a lake freezing over from the bottom up. I walked to the kitchen and poured a glass of water and drank it standing at the sink, staring at nothing.

Axel came home a little after midnight. I was sitting at the kitchen table with the hard drive in front of me, right in the center, like an exhibit.

"Explain this," I said.

He looked at the drive. Then at me. Something crossed his face — guilt, maybe, for half a second — before it hardened into something else.

"You went through my studio," he said. "That's my space, Stella. You had no right."

"That's your answer?"

"It's private artistic work." His jaw tightened. "You're making this into something it isn't."

"Then tell me what it is." My voice stayed level. I was proud of that, in some distant way. "Why her? Why never me?"

He exhaled through his nose like I was being tiresome. "Because you don't inspire me. You never have."

The kitchen didn't get quieter. It just emptied out. I picked up my phone and scrolled to a name I hadn't called in months, though we texted often enough.

Lane Pierce answered on the second ring, voice thick with sleep. "Stella? It's one in the morning."

"I need divorce papers," I said. "Start tonight."

He didn't ask why. He didn't ask *are you sure.* That was Lane — steady, careful, never wasting a question. "I'll have a preliminary filing ready by morning," he said. "Don't touch anything in that studio."

He hung up. I found out later he sat at his desk the rest of the night, drafting, and somewhere in those hours he pulled up a public profile for Briella Ryan and made a call to a private investigator named Marcus Webb. I didn't know that then. I only knew he'd said *I'll have it ready,* and that was enough to make me breathe again.

By morning, I'd moved my things into the guest room and changed the alarm code. When Axel came back from wherever he'd spent the rest of his night, he found the studio door fitted with a padlock I'd installed myself, my hands steady the whole time.

He pounded on it. "Where's my equipment? Stella, open this door."

I opened it. I handed him his cameras in their case, one by one, calm as handing over dishes after dinner.

"I've retained an attorney," I said. "Lane Pierce."

Something flickered across his face then — not grief, not even anger. Alarm. I watched it settle behind his eyes and understood, with a clarity that felt almost peaceful, that it wasn't for me.

It was for himself.
