When My Husband Replaced My Dinner With Her Ramen Chapter 1

Two days before the dinner, I stood in the Brooklyn Heights butcher shop and watched the man behind the counter break down a heritage chicken with the kind of care that made my chest ache. I'd called ahead. I'd explained what I needed. He wrapped the pieces in brown paper like a gift.

I drove home with the chicken in a cooler and a bottle of Burgundy from the cellar list I kept in my phone. Ryan didn't know I kept lists. He thought I just remembered things.

The coq au vin took two days. I browned the chicken in butter until the skin turned gold. I deglazed the pan with cognac and let the wine reduce until it smelled like something you'd want to live inside. I added pearl onions and mushrooms and bacon I'd rendered myself. I let it sit overnight so the flavors could marry. That's what my father always called it. Marriage. When things became better together than they were apart.

I made crème brûlée in individual ramekins. I torched the sugar to a perfect amber shell. I set them in the fridge and told myself not to test one. I wanted Ryan to see them first. I wanted him to be proud.

I also made a dossier. Twelve pages on Esteban Medina. His portfolio companies. His investment thesis. The questions he asked in every interview I could find. I highlighted the sections Ryan should read and left it on his desk with a note: *This matters. Please.*

He skimmed three pages over breakfast and said I was overthinking it.

"He's just a guy, Luce. I've got this."

I nodded. I poured him more coffee. I did not say: *He is not just a guy. He is the guy. The one who decides if your company lives or dies. The one I have spent two days cooking for because I know how much this means to you.*

I said: "Okay."

On the evening of the dinner, I set the table at five. White linen. The good plates. Candles that hadn't been lit since our anniversary. I checked the coq au vin. I checked the brûlée. I checked my reflection in the hallway mirror and smoothed my dress and told myself to stop fidgeting.

Esteban was due at seven.

Ryan arrived at six forty with Kehlani Ramos on his arm.

She wore a sundress. Yellow. Casual in the way that costs money to look like it didn't. She carried a grocery bag. She smiled at me with her whole face.

"Lucia! Oh my god, you look amazing. Ryan said you wouldn't mind if I tagged along. I brought something fun!"

I looked at Ryan. He was grinning. Not sheepish. Not apologetic. Just grinning.

"Kehlani had this great idea," he said. "Thought we'd mix things up a little."

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Looked at the table I'd set. The chicken I'd browned. The brûlée waiting in the fridge.

"What idea?" I asked.

Kehlani was already moving past me into the kitchen. She set the grocery bag on the counter beside my Dutch oven and started unpacking. Instant ramen. The kind that came in plastic packets. A bottle of ghost pepper sauce so red it looked radioactive.

"I saw this thing on TikTok," she said. "Super viral. Everyone's doing it. It's like, authentic? You know? Not all fancy and intimidating."

She tilted her head at my coq au vin. Her smile didn't move.

"No offense," she added.

I stood in the doorway. I watched her boil water in my kettle. I watched her tear open the ramen packet and dump the noodles in. I watched her pour the ghost pepper sauce over the top until the broth turned the color of a warning.

Ryan leaned against the doorframe. Arms crossed. Still grinning.

"Come on, babe. Loosen up. Not everything has to be so fancy."

I looked at him. I looked for the man who used to bring me wildflowers. The one who called me his secret weapon. The one who said he couldn't do any of this without me.

I didn't find him.

I folded the dish towel over the oven handle. I stepped back from the counter. I said nothing.

Esteban Medina arrived at six fifty-five. Exactly five minutes early. He stood in the entryway and looked at the table. At the linen. At the candles. At the bowl of violently red ramen sitting in the center like a bomb.

He shook Ryan's hand. He nodded at Kehlani. He looked at me.

I looked back.

He sat down. Kehlani served the ramen with both hands, like an offering. Ryan watched her with his whole face.

Esteban picked up his fork. He took one bite. He set the fork down.

For ninety minutes, I watched my husband perform.

He introduced Kehlani as his "secret weapon at the office." He laughed too loud. He interrupted me twice when I tried to redirect the conversation toward the market analysis I'd spent a week preparing. The third time, he didn't interrupt. He just said:

"Babe, let the grown-ups talk."

Kehlani giggled.

Esteban's face didn't change. But his eyes moved to me. And stayed.

I felt something inside me go very still. Not breaking. Not bending. Just stopping.

I flattened my hands on the table. I stopped trying to serve. I stopped trying to smile. I stopped trying to be the woman who made this work.

I just watched.

Esteban left at nine with a handshake and no commitment. Ryan walked him to the door. Kehlani started clearing plates.

I stood in the kitchen and looked at the coq au vin I'd made. Still sitting in the Dutch oven. Untouched.

I thought about my father. About the way he used to say *marriage* when he talked about flavors becoming something better together.

I thought: *Some things don't marry. Some things just sit next to each other and rot.*

Ryan came back into the kitchen. He was smiling.

"That went great," he said.

I looked at him.

I didn't say anything.

I turned off the stove.
