When My Husband Protected His Mistress Instead of Me Chapter 1

The café on Capitol Hill was called Mercer & Vine. It was bright, expensive, and smelled of roasted beans and wet coats.

I sat across from Kimora Price. She was twenty-nine, eight years younger than me. Her father was Malik Price, the senior partner at my husband’s law firm. She wore a cream cashmere sweater that looked brand new.

She took a sip of her latte and set the cup down.

"Let’s not make this ugly, Ariah," she said. Her voice was smooth. "Dean is about to make equity partner. He needs someone who can elevate him. Someone with connections. A future." She looked at my wool coat, then at my bare nails. "You took care of his mother. You helped him through law school. That was noble. But your time is done."

She did not look at me like an enemy. She looked at me like a piece of old furniture Dean had forgotten to put on the curb.

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of eighty-hour workweeks, cold dinners, and my own quiet sacrifices.

I did not raise my voice. I did not throw my drink. I set my cup down on the small marble table. Then I took out my phone and typed a message to Dean.

*Come to Mercer & Vine. Now.*

Dean arrived fourteen minutes later. He rushed through the glass doors, breathing hard. His tie was loose. Raindrops clung to the shoulders of his charcoal suit.

His eyes scanned the room, found our table, and went wide with panic.

He hurried over. But he did not stop beside me.

Instinctively, Dean stepped right between us. His back turned toward me. His arm reached out slightly, his body angling to block Kimora from my view. He was shielding her. Protecting her from me.

It lasted two seconds.

In those two seconds, ten years crumbled into dust.

I stared at his broad back. I had ironed that shirt this morning. I had picked up his dry cleaning yesterday. And here he was, treating me like a threat to the woman who wanted to steal my life.

I stood up. I smoothed the front of my coat.

"Thank you for the coffee, Kimora," I said quietly.

I walked past Dean without looking into his face.

Outside, the Seattle sky was a dull, heavy gray. A cold mist blew across my cheeks. I got into my sedan and locked the doors. My hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned bone white. My chest burned.

I did not cry. Crying was for things you could fix.

I started the engine and drove home.

That evening, Dean texted: *Working late on the Price file. Don't wait up.*

I didn’t.

I sat at our dining table under the warm chandelier. I opened my laptop. Before I quit to support Dean, I had worked as a corporate paralegal. I knew how contracts worked. I knew how to dig through numbers.

I pulled up ten years of color-coded spreadsheets. Bank statements, mortgage deeds, retirement accounts, credit lines. I divided everything cleanly down the middle. I didn't want his firm shares. I didn't want his future bonuses. I only wanted what was mine.

By dawn, the printer in the corner stopped humming.

I collated the pages. I clipped them neatly. A complete divorce agreement, forty-two pages, with yellow signature tabs stuck to the bottom.

I set the stack on the kitchen counter, right beside his empty ceramic coffee mug.

Dean came home at seven in the morning. He smelled of cold air and stale office espresso. He dropped his briefcase on a stool and saw the papers.

He flipped the top page. His face went pale, then flushed red.

"What is this?" he asked, his voice sharp. "Ariah, are you insane?"

"It's a divorce agreement," I said from across the island. "Sign the last page."

"Are you serious right now?" He tossed the pages down. They scattered across the counter. "Because of yesterday? Nothing happened, Ariah! Kimora is Malik’s daughter. I have to manage that relationship for the firm. You're being dramatic. You're delusional if you think I'm signing this."

"You stood in front of her, Dean."

"She felt threatened by you!" he shouted. "You ambushed her!"

My heart turned to stone. "Sign the papers, Dean."

Before he could speak, his phone buzzed on the island. The screen lit up: *Kimora*.

He didn’t silence it. The call connected, and Kimora’s breathy, teasing voice came through the speaker.

*“Dean? You awake? Dad wants to see the draft before nine...”*

Dean reached for the phone, turning his back to me again. He started to speak into the receiver.

"Dean," I said, stepping forward. I reached out and caught his sleeve. "Look at me."

"Get off me!" he snapped.

He shoved my arm away with sudden, reckless force.

I lost my balance. My socks slipped on the hardwood floor. My body crashed against the heavy marble corner of the island.

A sharp, sickening thud echoed through the quiet kitchen.

Pain exploded in my left hip. I slid down onto the floor, clutching my side. My breath caught in my throat.

Dean froze. He stared down at his open palm, his chest heaving. Horror flashed in his eyes.

"Ariah," he whispered.

He took half a step toward me, then stopped. His pride locked his knees in place. He couldn't bring himself to kneel. He couldn't apologize.

His jaw tightened. To cover his shame, his face hardened into cold fury.

He grabbed the black ink pen from the counter. He flipped roughly to the final page of the papers. He scribbled his name across the line, pressed so hard the paper tore, and threw the pen down.

"There," he spat. "You got what you wanted."

He snatched his briefcase and slammed the front door behind him.

The sound rattled the kitchen windows.

Then everything went still.

I stayed on the floor. I pulled my sweater up slightly. A deep, purplish bruise was already rising against my skin.

I pressed my fingers to the ache.

I looked at his signature on the counter, black and jagged.

"Thank you," I whispered to the empty room. "Thank you for making this easy."
