When My Husband Planned My Death for Insurance Money Chapter 1

My father collapsed at 9:47 PM on a Thursday in October.

I know the exact time because I was staring at the kitchen clock when his hand went to his chest. One moment he was telling me about a zoning meeting. The next he was on the floor.

I screamed his name. I dropped to my knees. His face was gray. His lips were moving but no sound came out.

"Tyler!" I shouted toward the hallway. "Call 911!"

My husband appeared in the doorway. He looked at my father on the floor. He looked at me. Then he pulled out his phone with the calm of someone ordering takeout.

I pressed my hands to my father's chest. I didn't know CPR well enough. I was shaking too hard. I kept saying *please* over and over like it was a spell that could work if I just said it enough times.

Tyler finished the call. "Ambulance is coming," he said. "But it'll be twenty minutes. Traffic."

"Then we drive him," I said. "Mount Sinai is ten minutes away."

"Evelyn—"

"Get the car. Now."

Tyler's face did something I didn't understand then. A flicker. A calculation. Then he sighed. "You know I can't drive at night."

I stared at him.

"My night blindness," he said gently. "I've told you. I can't see in the dark."

"Then I'll drive," I said. "Just help me get him to the car."

Tyler nodded. Together we got my father up. He was so heavy. His breathing was shallow and wrong. We made it to the garage. I lowered him into the back seat as carefully as I could. His eyes were closed.

"Keys," I said.

Tyler patted his pockets. "They're in the ignition."

I ran to the driver's side. The ignition was empty.

"Tyler, they're not here."

He came around. He leaned into the car. He squinted at the dashboard. He felt around the console. "I could've sworn..."

"Check your pockets again."

He checked. He frowned. He walked back into the house.

I sat in the driver's seat with the door open and my father dying behind me. I counted my heartbeats. I prayed.

Tyler came back five minutes later. "Found them. They were on the kitchen counter."

He handed them to me. I jammed the key into the ignition. The engine turned over. I started to reverse.

"Wait," Tyler said. "The mirror's off."

I looked. The rearview mirror was angled wrong. I reached up to adjust it.

"No, the side mirror," he said. "I can't see anything."

"You're not driving," I said.

"I know, but it's disorienting. Just—let me fix it."

He got out. He adjusted the passenger side mirror. Then he came back and said the driver's side was off too. I wanted to scream. I wanted to hit him. I got out and fixed it myself.

When I got back in, Tyler was checking his phone.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Texting my mother," he said. "She'll want to know."

I reversed out of the garage. I made it halfway down the driveway before Tyler said, "Stop."

I slammed the brakes. "What?"

"I think we should wait for the ambulance," he said. "You're too upset to drive safely. And if something happens on the way—"

"Nothing's going to happen."

"But if it does, we'll be liable. The paramedics have equipment. They're trained."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. His face was calm. Reasonable. He looked like a man trying to help.

"My father is dying," I said.

"I know," Tyler said softly. "That's why we have to be smart."

I don't know why I listened. Maybe because I was terrified. Maybe because some part of me still believed my husband wanted to protect me.

I pulled back into the garage. I turned off the engine. I climbed into the back seat and held my father's hand.

The ambulance arrived forty minutes later.

By the time we reached Mount Sinai, a young resident with tired eyes met us at the entrance. She looked at me. She looked at the paramedics wheeling the gurney.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "He was gone before he arrived."

I didn't cry. I didn't move. I just stood there in the fluorescent light of the emergency bay while Tyler put his hand on my shoulder and said all the right things to all the right people.

Later, I would realize that we spent two hours in that garage.

Two hours while my father died alone in the back seat.

Two hours while Tyler adjusted mirrors and checked his phone and convinced me to wait.

But that night, I didn't realize anything.

I just held the hospital paper bag with my father's wallet and watch inside, and I let my husband drive me home in the dark without a single wrong turn.
