When My Husband Let My Mother Die for His Mistress Chapter 1

I woke up on my thirty-fourth birthday to an empty bed.

Layton's side was cold. The sheets were pulled tight, like he'd made the bed before he left. I rolled over and checked my phone. No text. No note on the nightstand. Just silence.

I sat up and listened. The house felt hollow. Brooks's door was closed down the hall. The clock on the dresser said 6:47 AM. Layton had early office hours on Thursdays. He'd mentioned it last week. Or maybe the week before. I couldn't remember anymore. His schedule blurred together—faculty meetings, departmental reviews, student conferences. All of it more important than breakfast with his wife.

I got dressed and went downstairs. The kitchen was dark. I turned on the light and stood there for a minute, staring at the coffee maker. Then I opened the cabinet and pulled out flour, sugar, eggs. My hands moved on autopilot. I'd done this twice before. Last year. The year before that. Baking my own birthday cake while my family slept or worked or forgot.

The batter came together smooth and pale. I poured it into the pan and slid it into the oven. The timer ticked. I sat at the kitchen table and waited.

Brooks came down at seven-thirty, backpack slung over one shoulder, earbuds in. He grabbed a granola bar from the pantry and headed for the door.

"Brooks," I said.

He paused, one earbud out. "Yeah?"

"Do you know what today is?"

He blinked. "Thursday?"

I smiled. It felt like stretching old rubber. "Never mind. Have a good day at school."

He shrugged and left. The door clicked shut behind him.

I pulled the cake out of the oven at eight. It was small, plain, unfrosted. I set it on the counter and stared at it. Then I went upstairs to clean.

Layton's study was always a mess. Papers everywhere, books stacked in crooked towers, pens scattered across his desk. I used to find it charming. Now it just made me tired. I gathered the loose papers into a neat pile, straightened the books, wiped down the desk. My hand brushed against something hard beneath a stack of student essays.

I pulled it out. A digital camera. Sleek, expensive, still in its protective case.

My breath caught. Maybe he'd remembered after all. Maybe this was for me—a gift he'd hidden, planning to surprise me tonight. I turned it over in my hands. The case was unscratched. Brand new.

I opened it and pressed the power button.

The screen lit up. A photo filled the display.

A girl. Young. Maybe twenty-two, twenty-three. Dark hair spilling over a pillow. Eyes closed. Lips slightly parted. The angle was close, intimate. Like the photographer had been leaning over her.

I pressed the arrow button. Another photo. The same girl, awake this time, laughing. Sunlight through a window. She wore a loose sweater, one shoulder bare.

Another photo. Her hand holding a coffee cup. The university logo visible on the sleeve.

Another. A close-up of her collarbone. The curve of her neck. The hollow of her throat.

I kept pressing. There were dozens. Her sleeping. Her reading. Her looking out a window. Her biting her lip. Her stretching. Her laughing. All taken in the same place—Layton's office. I recognized the bookshelves behind her. The leather chair. The window with the broken blind slat.

My hands were shaking. The camera slipped. I caught it and sat down hard on the floor.

I scrolled back to the first photo and zoomed in. There was a student ID badge on the desk in the background, just barely visible. I squinted. The name was blurry but readable.

Viviana Pierce.

I sat there on the study floor, camera in my lap, and stared at nothing. Downstairs, the kitchen timer beeped. My birthday cake was ready.

I didn't move.

Over the next three days, I became someone I didn't recognize.

I checked Layton's phone while he showered. I memorized his passcode—our wedding anniversary, the one date he'd never changed—and scrolled through his messages. There she was. Viviana. Months of texts. Hundreds of them.

*"Can't stop thinking about our talk today, Professor."*

*"You make me feel alive again."*

*"When can I see you?"*

*"Tonight. My office. 8 PM."*

I checked her Instagram. She posted photos of coffee cups and books and blurry city lights. In one photo, the edge of a man's hand was visible, resting on a table. A wedding ring glinted on his finger.

I cross-referenced Layton's calendar. Every late meeting matched a night Viviana posted a photo with a timestamp. Every departmental event he attended, she attended too.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I just kept collecting evidence, piece by piece, like building a case I didn't know I'd need yet.

On the fourth night, Layton came home at eleven. He smelled like her perfume—something sweet and young and wrong. He kissed the top of my head and said he was exhausted.

"Long day?" I asked.

He nodded. "Student meetings. You know how it is."

I smiled. "I know."

He went upstairs. I stayed in the kitchen, staring at my cold, untouched birthday cake.

Something inside me had changed. Something quiet and irrevocable. I didn't know what I was going to do yet.

But I knew I wasn't going to stay silent.
