When My Husband Learned I Was the Girl on the Roof Chapter 1

The penthouse was quiet the way a museum is quiet. Cold marble. Cold light. Cold air pushing through the vents like it had somewhere better to be.

I was curled on the couch when the television cut to a breaking segment. A gold background. A headline in bold letters. *Billionaire Royce Montgomery Offers $1 Million Reward.*

I reached for the remote to turn it off. My husband's name in a tabloid was nothing new. Then I heard the anchor say another name, and my hand stopped in the air.

"...a sentimental necklace tied to the night Miss Zara Palmer saved Mr. Montgomery's life. Sources close to the couple say the piece has irreplaceable emotional value."

A photograph filled the screen.

A locket. Small, gold, heart-shaped. A hairline scratch running across the clasp like a crack in a piece of ice. On the back, one word engraved in thin script.

*Stay.*

I didn't move. I don't think I breathed.

I knew that scratch. I made that scratch. I was thirteen, standing barefoot on the cold bathroom tile the week before my mother's funeral. I had been trying to fasten the locket around my own neck and dropped it. It hit the floor and slid under the sink. When I picked it up, the clasp had a little silver line across it, thin as a hair.

My mother had laughed when I showed her, from her hospital bed. She said scratches meant a thing was loved.

I stood up. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else. I walked to the bookshelf and pulled down the paperback I'd been reading. Inside the back cover was a photograph, worn soft at the corners.

My mother. Fifteen years ago. Sitting on our old porch swing. The locket around her neck.

I held the picture up to the screen.

Same heart. Same clasp. Same scratch.

The room tilted. Not fast. Slow, like a boat easing off a dock.

The boy on the rooftop.

I was fifteen. It was raining. He was seventeen, maybe. Sitting on the ledge. Sneakers wet, knuckles white on the metal railing. I had stayed. I had talked until my throat hurt. And when he finally climbed down, shaking, I pressed my mother's locket into his palm because I couldn't think of anything else to give a stranger who had almost died.

I never learned his name.

I stared at the television. My husband's face. His mouth moving. His hand on Zara's back.

That boy was Royce.

The woman he had chosen over me at every dinner, every anniversary, every hospital bed. The woman he flew across oceans for. The soulmate he had built our entire marriage around like a shrine.

Was me.

I don't know how long I sat there. The segment ended. Another started. Someone was laughing about a cooking show.

I stood up, put on my coat, and walked out of the penthouse.

---

Fifth Avenue was bright and loud and full of people who had never been erased by anyone.

I went into the first store I saw. Then the next. Then the next. I pulled things off racks without looking at them. A coat. Two dresses. A pair of boots I would never wear. I didn't want any of it. I just wanted to hear the beep of the card and feel, for one second, like I was taking up space.

At the fourth store, the register beeped differently.

The girl behind the counter blinked at the screen. She swiped the card again. Same sound.

"I'm so sorry, ma'am," she said, in the careful voice people use when they think you might cry. "It's been declined."

"Try it again."

"I've tried it twice."

I felt heat crawl up my neck. Two women near the handbags had turned to look. A man pretended to read a tag.

Royce. He had frozen the accounts.

Same message. Always the same message. *You are not a priority.*

I left the bags on the counter and walked out.

---

My father was waiting in the penthouse when I got home. He didn't ring the bell. He never rings the bell.

He was standing by the window in a suit that was too expensive for a Tuesday.

"Penny." He didn't turn around. "Sit down."

"I'd rather stand."

"You're jeopardizing the deal."

He finally faced me. There was no worry in his face. No question about whether I had eaten, or slept, or cried. Just the quiet, patient look of a man watching a spreadsheet.

"Crawford Holdings runs on Montgomery money," he said. "You know this. Whatever is happening with you and Royce, fix it. Smile at the right dinners. Wear the right dress. Do not make this difficult."

"And if I do?"

He smiled. That was the worst part. He smiled.

"Then your life becomes considerably more difficult, sweetheart. I'd rather it didn't."

He let himself out.

I stood in the hallway a long time after the door closed. Looking at the space where he had been. Something inside me that had always answered when he called went quiet.

---

The next afternoon, at Bergdorf's, I heard her voice before I saw her.

"Penny? Oh my god, is that you?"

Zara Palmer. Fresh off a plane from Paris, glowing the way only rested, wealthy women glow. Cream coat, gold earrings, hair like a shampoo commercial.

She touched my elbow. Light, familiar.

"You look exhausted, sweetie." Her voice dropped, warm and low. "Royce worries about you. In his way."

I didn't answer.

"He told me you haven't been sleeping. He said your hands shake in the mornings now. He notices, you know. He just doesn't always know how to say it."

Things I had never told him. Things he had never asked.

I smiled with the corner of my mouth. "That's kind of you."

"I just want you to be okay." She squeezed my arm. "Truly."

She drifted away toward the shoe department, humming.

I walked into the nearest fitting room, shut the door, and gripped the chair rail until my knuckles went white. I counted my breaths. In for four. Out for four.

My locket. My mother. My rooftop. My words.

And she was wearing my life like a coat she'd found on sale.
