When My Husband Learned I Was an Interpol Agent Chapter 1

I found the photograph on a Tuesday.

Tuesdays were my day for Damien's office. Mondays I did the kitchen and living room. Wednesdays the bedroom. Thursdays the guest spaces. Fridays I reviewed my work and prepared for the weekend social obligations—the dinners where I smiled at his colleagues' wives and pretended I didn't notice their pity. Five years of this routine had made me invisible. The perfect housewife moved through the penthouse like a ghost, and ghosts could go anywhere.

I ran the microfiber cloth along the mahogany desk in smooth, even strokes. Damien kept his office locked when he was home, but I had every key in this apartment. I'd had them since the first week. The morning sun cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the East River into hammered silver. Eighteen floors below, the city moved without us.

The whiskey box sat on the credenza behind his chair—Italian leather, probably a gift from one of his Alpine Summit Club cronies. I'd dusted it a hundred times. But this morning the lid sat slightly crooked, like someone had opened it in a hurry and not quite closed it again.

I lifted the lid.

Inside, beneath a layer of tissue paper that hadn't been there last week, was a Polaroid.

Damien had his arm around her. Kira Moreno, the woman whose perfume I'd been smelling on his clothes for eight months. She wore a red dress cut low enough to be a statement. Damien's hand rested on her hip with the casual ownership of a man who'd stopped pretending. They were seated at a poker table—high-backed leather chairs, the kind you only found in the private rooms. Chips were scattered across the green felt in careless stacks. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, maybe more. Both of them were laughing.

I stood there for three seconds. Four. Five.

Then I set the photo on the desk, pulled the micro-camera from my cleaning caddy, and took six shots from different angles. The device was smaller than a lipstick tube. Devon had given it to me four years ago in a parking garage in Queens, along with instructions I could recite in my sleep: *Document everything. Assume nothing. Stay alive.*

I replaced the photo exactly as I'd found it. Tissue paper smoothed. Lid aligned. I finished dusting the credenza, then moved to the bookshelves. My hands didn't shake. They never shook anymore.

By the time I left the office, locked the door, and returned to the kitchen, I'd already composed the message in my head.

The encrypted laptop lived in a false bottom beneath the kitchen sink, under the cleaning supplies no one but me ever touched. I opened it, logged into the secure channel, and typed:

*Timeline acceleration required. Visual confirmation of subject with K. Moreno at underground venue. High-value transaction visible. Request immediate analysis and tactical consult.*

I hit send and waited.

Devon's response came through in ninety seconds.

*Received. Uploading images now. Video call in twenty minutes. Are you secure?*

I glanced at the clock on the oven. Damien wouldn't be home until after seven. He had a 'business lunch' that would run until cocktail hour, which meant he'd be with Kira until he remembered he had a wife.

*Secure,* I typed back.

Twenty minutes later, Devon's face filled the laptop screen. He was in his office at the New York field station—I recognized the gray wall behind him, the framed commendation he never talked about. He had a coffee mug in his hand, black no sugar, the same way he'd taken it every morning for five years. His expression was carefully neutral, but I saw the tightness at the corners of his eyes.

"The images are clean," he said without preamble. "Facial recognition confirms Kira Moreno and three known associates of the Alpine Summit operation. The venue matches the layout of the private room at the Lexington Club. We've been trying to get eyes inside that location for two years."

"Then we have enough," I said.

Devon set his mug down. "Lauren—"

"We have enough," I repeated. "The financial conspiracy documentation is nearly complete. Whitney's phone records. Elliot's offshore facilitation. Damien's shell companies. We're two weeks out, maybe three."

"I'm filing the extraction request again."

"Devon."

"Third time," he continued, his voice even. "The case is strong enough. You've been in there five years. That's longer than—"

"The debt transfer documents aren't court-admissible yet," I interrupted. "Whitney and Damien are planning to load me with half a million in fraudulent liability and dump me before I can contest it. If I extract now, they execute that plan and tie the case up in civil litigation for years. You know that."

Devon was quiet for a moment. Then he leaned forward slightly, his gaze direct through the screen.

"Is that the only reason?"

The question landed softly. Too softly.

I smiled—the same deflective smile I'd been using for five years, though this time it was for someone who actually knew the difference. "Are you asking if I've developed a martyr complex, Agent Moore?"

"I'm asking if you're still sure where the cover ends."

I should have had a quick answer. Something sharp and certain. Instead, I looked at the man on the screen who'd been the only constant in this entire operation, who'd taken my 2 AM calls when the walls of this penthouse felt like they were closing in, who'd never once treated me like an asset instead of a person.

"Two weeks," I said quietly. "Three at most. Then I'm done."

Devon studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Two weeks," he agreed. "But Lauren—when this is over, we're having a different conversation."

I closed the laptop before I could ask what he meant.
