The Manhattan mansion looked the same as I remembered. Same iron gates. Same marble steps. Same cold elegance that had always felt more like a museum than a home. I paid the cab driver and stood on the sidewalk with my suitcase, staring up at the place I'd left three weeks ago.

Three weeks in Miami closing Brayden's deal with the Ortega suppliers. Three weeks of warehouse inspections and contract negotiations and sleeping in hotel rooms that all looked identical. Three weeks of doing his work while he stayed here.

I should have felt relief to be back. Instead, my stomach tightened as I climbed the steps.

The front door opened before I could reach for my keys. Stevens, our head of staff, stood in the doorway. He was sixty, gray-haired, and had worked for the Collins family since before I married into it. He'd always greeted me with a slight smile and a courteous nod.

Today, he wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Mrs. Collins," he said quietly. "Welcome home."

I stepped past him into the foyer. The house was too quiet. Normally there would be noise—staff preparing for the evening, the housekeeper running the vacuum somewhere upstairs, the cook clattering in the kitchen. Today, there was only silence and the faint smell of lilies.

Funeral flowers.

Brayden's father had died four days ago. Heart attack in his study. I'd gotten the news in Miami and caught the first flight I could, but by the time I landed, the funeral arrangements were already made. Brayden had handled everything without me.

"Where is everyone?" I asked Stevens.

He hesitated. "The family is in the west parlor, ma'am. Preparing for the viewing this evening."

Family. The word sat wrong in my mouth.

I left my suitcase by the stairs and walked toward the west parlor. My heels clicked on the marble floor. The sound echoed.

As I got closer, I heard voices. Brayden's low murmur. A woman's soft reply. A child's laugh, quickly hushed.

I stopped in the doorway.

Brayden stood by the fireplace in a black suit. Perfectly tailored. His dark hair was combed back, and his expression was calm, controlled. The same face he wore in boardrooms when he was about to destroy someone's career.

Next to him stood Daniella Foster.

She wore a black dress. Simple, elegant, expensive. Her hair was pulled back in a neat bun, and her hand rested on Brayden's arm. Not tentatively. Not like staff. Like she belonged there.

I'd hired Daniella five years ago. Found her outside a Bronx shelter, seventeen and desperate. I'd given her a job, a room, a future. She'd cried and thanked me and promised she'd never forget my kindness.

Now she stood beside my husband in matching mourning clothes, and her hand was on his arm like it had always been there.

The boy—my son, the child I'd raised for six years—sat on the sofa with a coloring book. He looked up when I entered, and for a moment I thought he'd run to me the way he always did.

Instead, he glanced at Daniella.

"Mama," he said. "Can I have juice?"

Daniella smiled at him. "In a minute, sweetheart."

I stood very still. The word echoed in my head. Mama. Not me. Her.

Brayden finally looked at me. His expression didn't change. "Scarlet," he said evenly. "You're back."

I couldn't speak. My throat had closed.

Daniella turned toward me, and her face arranged itself into something apologetic, something soft. "Mrs. Collins," she said quietly. "I'm so sorry for your loss."

My loss.

I looked at Brayden. At the woman beside him. At the boy who'd called her Mama. At the room that suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.

"I need to speak with you," I said. My voice came out flat. "Alone."

Brayden's jaw tightened slightly. It was the only sign I'd surprised him. He glanced at Daniella, and something passed between them. A look. An understanding.

"Of course," he said. He touched Daniella's hand briefly—casually, intimately—and walked toward me. "Let's go to my study."

He moved past me into the hallway without waiting. I followed, my hands clenched at my sides.

Behind me, I heard Daniella's soft voice. "Come here, baby. Let's get you that juice."

The boy's footsteps pattered across the floor. Toward her. Away from me.

I kept walking. One foot in front of the other. Down the long hallway toward the study where I'd signed contracts and made calls and built an empire for a man who'd just let another woman call my son hers.

The door to the study was open. Brayden stood by the desk, waiting.

I stepped inside, and he closed the door behind me with a quiet click.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. He looked at me with that same calm expression, like I was a problem to be managed. A variable in an equation he'd already solved.

I thought about the three weeks in Miami. The deals I'd closed. The enemies I'd handled. The work I'd done while he stayed here with her.

"How long?" I asked.

He didn't pretend not to understand. He straightened his cufflinks. Once. Twice. A small, deliberate gesture.

"Does it matter?" he said quietly.

I looked at him—really looked at him—and saw a stranger.
