When My Husband Framed My Sister for His Mistress Chapter 1

The ballroom looked like something out of a dream. Golden light spilled from three crystal chandeliers overhead, catching on champagne flutes and silk gowns and the white roses that cascaded down every column. Three hundred guests filled the space, their laughter floating up toward the vaulted ceiling. I stood beside Zayn at the head table, my fingers resting lightly on the stem of my glass, and I let myself feel it — the warmth, the rightness, the sense that I had finally built something permanent.

Zayn's hand settled on my waist. His touch was warm through the lace of my gown, the dress I'd spent weeks designing and altering myself, every stitch a promise. I glanced up at him. He was smiling at someone across the room, his jaw sharp in the soft light, his tuxedo fitted perfectly. He looked like every version of the future I'd imagined since the day he first asked me to coffee.

He straightened his cufflinks. The small gesture pulled my attention — his thumb and forefinger adjusting the silver twice, three times, even though they were already perfectly aligned. I'd seen him do it a hundred times before. Board meetings. Family dinners. Any moment that mattered. I used to think it was charming, a small nervous habit that made him human. Tonight, I couldn't explain why it made my chest tighten.

I smoothed a wrinkle in my sleeve that wasn't there. My own tell. Scout used to tease me about it.

The toasts began. Zayn's best man — a college friend whose name I could never remember — raised his glass and told a story about Zayn winning a debate competition by sheer force of charm. Everyone laughed. Then Zayn stood, lifting his champagne, and the room quieted instantly.

"I'm not great at speeches," he began, his voice warm and self-deprecating in that practiced way that always worked on a crowd. "But I know when I'm lucky. Rachel is the kind of woman who makes you want to be better. Kinder. More honest."

He looked down at me. His eyes were soft. I felt my throat tighten.

"She sees the best in people," he continued. "Even when they don't deserve it. And I promise, for the rest of my life, I'm going to work every day to deserve her."

The applause was thunderous. Glasses clinked. Someone whistled. I blinked hard, my vision blurring at the edges, and reached for Zayn's hand. He squeezed my fingers once, then let go to acknowledge the crowd.

For one suspended, perfect moment, I believed him.

Then the doors exploded open.

The sound cracked through the ballroom like a gunshot. Conversations died mid-sentence. Heads turned. I turned.

Henley Oliver stood in the doorway.

Her dress — a sleek black number I'd seen her wear at family dinners — was torn at the shoulder, the fabric hanging loose. One of her heels was snapped, dangling from her hand. Mascara streaked down her face in thick, wet lines. She gripped the door frame with her free hand, her knuckles white, and her breath came in ragged, hitching sobs.

"Help," she gasped. "Someone — please —"

The room froze. Three hundred people, silent as stone.

Henley's gaze swept the ballroom, wild and unfocused, until it landed on me. Her eyes locked onto mine. Then she screamed.

"Scout Stewart!" Her voice cracked, raw and hysterical. "He — he attacked me — he assaulted me —"

The words hit like a fist to my sternum. My breath stopped. The room tilted.

Scout. My sister. My brother. The person who had spent a lifetime standing between me and every danger I never saw coming.

Henley collapsed against the door frame, her hand pressing instinctively against her stomach as she trembled. Cameras flashed. Phones lifted. Every guest in the ballroom turned to stare — not at her, but at me.

I felt Zayn step away. The warmth of his hand left my waist. The space between us opened like a chasm.

I turned to him. "Zayn —"

His face had changed. The softness was gone. His jaw was set, his eyes cold and assessing, and when he looked at me, it was like looking at a stranger.

"Denounce him," he said.

His voice was low. Controlled. Audible to the nearest tables but not the whole room. Not yet.

"What?" I whispered.

"Right now, Rachel." He stepped closer, his body angling toward me in a way that looked protective to anyone watching but felt like a cage closing in. "You go up there, you tell everyone that Scout Stewart is not welcome in your life, and you agree to press charges immediately. Do it now."

My fingers found the wrinkle in my sleeve. Smoothed it once. Twice. My mind raced, tripping over itself. Scout would never. Scout couldn't. Scout was —

"Zayn, this doesn't make sense —"

"I don't care." His voice dropped to a hiss. "You'll have nothing. You are nothing without me. I will annul this marriage on the spot and make sure every door in this city closes in your face."

The chandeliers overhead blurred. The golden light turned sickly. I stared at the man I had just married, the man who had promised to deserve me, and I saw it.

The mask had fallen.

And underneath was something I had never let myself see.
