When My Father’s Killer Said I Belonged to Him Chapter 1

I was sixteen when I learned the truth about my father's death.

The Armstrong estate was lit up like a cruise ship that night. Another gala. Another parade of Manhattan money in borrowed diamonds and inherited smirks. I moved through the ballroom with a tray of champagne flutes, my dress a borrowed thing from Lucy's closet, my face a mask I'd practiced in the mirror until it looked like nothing at all.

No one saw me. That was the point.

Darius Armstrong held court near the French doors, his voice carrying across the marble like he owned the air itself. Maybe he did. Kylo stood near the bar, dark suit, darker expression, watching the room the way you'd watch a chessboard. His mother had been dead two years by then. I'd been living in this house for eight.

I was supposed to be grateful.

I set the tray down near the kitchen and slipped up the back stairs. The study was on the third floor, past the guest wing, behind a door Darius kept locked. I'd lifted the key from his jacket pocket three days earlier. Copied it at a hardware store on my way back from school. Returned it before dinner.

The lock turned smooth and silent.

Inside, the study smelled like leather and old money. I didn't turn on the lights. The gala's glow came through the windows, just enough to see by. I went straight to the filing cabinet behind his desk. The one with the second lock.

I'd practiced on cheaper locks for months. This one took me four minutes.

The file was labeled MEDICAL—ACQUISITION. I almost laughed. Acquisition. Like I was a chair. A lamp. A thing.

I opened it.

The first page was a tissue-match report. My name at the top. Helena Armstrong's name next to it. Compatibility: 98%.

The second page was a contract. A construction foreman named Eddie Ruiz. Payment: $50,000. Instructions: worksite accident, target James Weaver, no witnesses.

My father's name.

I read it twice. My hands didn't shake. My chest didn't tighten. I felt nothing at all, which was how I knew it was true.

I pulled out my phone and photographed every page. Twenty-three in total. I put the file back exactly as I'd found it. Locked the cabinet. Locked the door. Walked back down the service stairs with the same blank expression I'd worn on the way up.

I went to my room. Lay down in the dark. Stared at the ceiling.

Three days later, I cried once. In the shower. Four minutes. Then I stopped.

That was eight years ago.

---

Tonight's gala is smaller than the one when I was sixteen, but the crowd is the same. Old money in new gowns. Hedge fund managers. Hotel heiresses. People who've never once wondered if they matter.

I wear a black dress Kylo had delivered to my room this morning. No note. There never is. It fits perfectly because he knows my measurements better than I do.

I move through the ballroom with a tray of hors d'oeuvres, offering smiles that don't reach my eyes. A woman in pearls waves me over. I approach. She takes a canapé without looking at me. I'm furniture.

Kylo arrives late.

The room shifts when he walks in. Not obviously. Just a slight recalibration of attention. He's tall, dark-haired, expensively dressed in a way that looks effortless. He doesn't smile. He never does at these things.

He finds me near the centerpieces.

"Ivory." His voice is low, cold. Carrying just enough to be heard by the people nearby. "The orchids are wilting."

I glance at the centerpiece. The orchids are fine. "I'll have them replaced."

"Now."

I set down the tray. Walk toward the service hall. I feel eyes on my back. Pity, maybe. Amusement. I don't care.

In the hallway, I stop. Breathe once. Touch the scar beneath my hair—hidden under careful styling, a thin raised line I've carried since the night Helena Armstrong died and Kylo smashed a crystal ashtray into my skull.

He told his father's men I was already dead.

I woke up alone on the kitchen floor. Seven stitches. A headache that lasted three days.

I thought he tried to kill me.

Maybe he did.

I pull out my phone and photograph the shipping manifest I lifted from Darius's study earlier tonight. Offshore accounts. Wire transfers. Federal bribery. I save it to the encrypted file alongside the others. Hundreds of pages now. Years of evidence.

I return to the ballroom with fresh orchids. Set them on the table. Kylo doesn't look at me.

Later, after the guests leave, I'm walking up the back stairs when I hear footsteps behind me.

"Ivory."

I stop. Turn.

Kylo stands three steps below me. His expression is unreadable. "Did you speak to any of my father's associates tonight?"

"No."

"Any of them approach you?"

"No one of importance."

He studies me. His eyes are dark, sharp, searching for something I won't let him find. Finally, he nods. Turns. Walks away.

I exhale slowly.

In my room, I add tonight's photographs to the file. Update my ledger. Every crime. Every name. Every transaction.

This is my life.

This is my war.

And I'm going to win.
