When My Ex-Mate Watched the Lycan Prince Kneel Chapter 1

The mark under my collarbone went cold before Kaysen finished saying my name.

"I, Kaysen Mason, Alpha of the Shadowridge Pack—" His voice carried over three hundred wolves gone silent, the ceremonial fire cracking behind him like the only thing in the room still breathing. "—reject you, Nova Richardson, as my mate and Luna."

The incomplete mark he'd never finished — seven years of promise pressed into skin that never got its bite — went from cold to hollow in the space of one heartbeat. Like a door closing on an empty house. Something ancient in me, something that had slept so long I'd stopped believing it existed, opened its mouth and howled. No one else heard it. I felt it tear up through my ribs and die somewhere behind my teeth.

I did not fall. I want that on record, even if only to myself: I did not fall.

Kaysen turned before the echo of his own vow finished. Savannah stood at the altar's edge in white, hands folded like she'd rehearsed the exact angle of humility, and when he sank his teeth into her throat, I felt that too — felt the bond I'd spent seven years defending get overwritten in real time, felt it the way you'd feel a bone reset without anesthesia. My knees buckled. My vision went the color of static.

I pressed my thumb hard into the inside of my opposite wrist. An old habit. It gave me one clean point of pain to stand on.

I lifted my chin. I walked out of the hall he built his throne in — the hall I'd paid to re-roof three winters ago — and I didn't look back once, though I heard Savannah's gasp of triumph chase me all the way to the doors.

The Luna suite still smelled like my white sage when I let myself in an hour later to collect my things. It didn't smell like that for long. Savannah was already inside, draped in my grandmother's ceremonial furs, the silver-grey pelt pooling around her bare feet like she'd been born wearing it.

"Those are mine," I said. "Take them off."

Her face did something complicated — checked the room, confirmed we were alone — and then went soft and cruel at the same time. "You should leave before you make this worse for yourself, Nova."

"Take them off."

She raked her own nails down both forearms, four furrows each, deep enough to bead red before I understood what she was doing. Then she screamed.

Kaysen came through the door already snarling, already deciding, his Alpha tone hitting the room like a dropped ceiling.

"Get. On. Your. Knees."

It slammed into my skull with physical weight, a hand pressing down on every vertebra at once. My legs went. My forehead nearly touched the floorboards I'd sanded myself the winter he couldn't afford a carpenter.

"Confine her to the omega quarter," he said, not looking at me, looking at Savannah's arms like they were the only true thing in the room. "Now."

And something in me — something that had been quiet for twenty-four years, quiet through every late-night ledger and every diplomatic phone call and every child's fever I'd broken with my own hands — finally, finally answered him back.

It didn't roar. It didn't need to. It simply refused.

The weight of his tone stayed, but it stopped being enough. I felt my spine straighten one vertebra at a time, felt heat pour down through muscle that had spent seven years believing it was ordinary. I stood. Kaysen's mouth opened — genuine shock, the first honest expression I'd seen on him all night — and I said nothing at all. There was nothing left worth saying to him.

I packed one bag. My field journal went in first — seven years of pack law precedents, healer's notes, every treaty I'd drafted in his name, every dollar I'd wired from my own account when his coffers ran dry. Proof. Currency. Weapon.

I crossed the territorial marker at the tree line before the sky had fully turned grey, the cold press of the dead mark on my neck the only part of me that still felt like Shadowridge.

Behind me, back toward the pack house, a horn sounded twice — sharp, deliberate, the sentries' signal for a breach.

They'd found the empty suite.
