When My CEO Let His Client Touch Me Chapter 1

The karaoke suite pulsed behind glass walls, all neon and bass, and I stepped into the corridor because I couldn't hear my own phone ring over the noise. That was the whole reason. I want to remember that clearly, because it matters — I wasn't looking for a reason to break. I was just trying to take a call.

The hallway outside VIP Suite 4 was quiet in that specific Manhattan way, hushed carpet and gold sconces swallowing the thump of music into something distant, like a heartbeat behind a wall. I pressed the phone to my ear, gave my name to a recruiter I'd been dodging for two weeks, and half-listened, my eyes on the door I'd left ajar out of habit. Drake liked me close. Not beside him. Close enough to be summoned.

That's when I heard my name.

Not Emmeline. He never called me Emmeline in front of people, not once in three years — I was always "my assistant" or nothing at all, a hand that materialized with the right folder at the right moment. But someone else said it, one of his college friends, Beau or Trent, I could never keep them straight, all cufflinks and inherited confidence. "So what's the deal with Emmeline, man? She's basically your wife at this point."

I froze with the phone still against my ear, the recruiter's voice a thin buzz I could no longer process.

Drake laughed. I knew that laugh. I'd built a home out of that laugh once, foolishly, brick by brick, telling myself it meant something when he let it out around me. "Emmeline?" he said, and there was ice in it, a carelessness I'd never let myself hear before because I'd been too busy translating everything he did into love. "She's not — come on. She's convenient. A warm body who happens to also be good at spreadsheets. That's all she's ever been."

The glasses clinked. Someone laughed too loud, the way men laugh when they want the room to know they agree.

Then his voice changed. Softened. Warmed, the way it never warmed for me. "Mina's different," he said. "She doesn't want anything from me. She's just — sweet. Innocent. You know? Like nothing's touched her yet."

I stood in that hallway in my black dress, the one I'd bought because he once said he liked me in black, and I felt something in my chest simply stop. Not shatter. Stop. Like a machine losing power mid-cycle, the hum of three years of gears just — cutting out.

The recruiter was still talking. I realized, distantly, that my thumb had already moved to accept the incoming call notification stacked on my screen — an email, actually, from Victor Hale at the firm in London, subject line: Final Offer — Managing Director, Global Strategy. I hadn't opened it in the two days since it landed. I opened it now, standing three feet from a door full of my own humiliation, and read the number twice to make sure I wasn't imagining the number of zeros.

It was staggering. It was more than staggering — it was an entire life, waiting on the other side of an ocean, addressed to a woman named Emmeline Carroll that nobody in that suite had ever bothered to meet.

I didn't cry. I want that on record too. I tapped **Accept Call**, told Victor Hale in a voice that didn't shake that I'd need to review the relocation terms but yes, in principle, yes — and I hung up before he could hear whatever was happening to my face.

I didn't go back into the suite. I didn't need to see Drake's expression when he realized I'd been standing there; I already knew he wouldn't have one. I rode the elevator down alone, thirty-one floors of mirrored silence, watching a woman I barely recognized study her own reflection with something that wasn't quite grief and wasn't quite relief. Somewhere between floor twenty and floor twelve, my face just — stopped performing.

Outside, the cold hit me first, then the noise of the city, cabs and laughter and someone's music leaking from a passing car. I called Mackenzie standing on the sidewalk, my heels sinking slightly into a grate, streetlight throwing my shadow long across the pavement.

She picked up on the second ring. "You never call this late."

"I heard everything," I said. "I'm done."

There was a pause — not shock, never shock, Mackenzie had been waiting three years for this sentence — and then, flat and certain: "Tell me what you need."

That was all. No questions. No I-told-you-so, though God knows she'd earned it a hundred times over. Just the sound of her getting off her couch, already moving, already mine.

I stood on that sidewalk a long moment after we hung up, watching my own breath fog in the December air, and felt the strangest thing: not devastation. Clarity. Like a fever finally breaking.

The next morning I was at my desk by six-forty, before the cleaning crew had even finished the lobby floors. I unlocked the bottom drawer with the little brass key I kept on my personal ring, and there it was — my passport, exactly where I'd left it eight months ago after a trip I never should have postponed for him. I ran my thumb over the embossed eagle on the cover.

I opened my laptop, typed a single encrypted line to Victor Hale — *I accept* — and hit send before I could recalculate the cost of leaving one more time.

Then I closed the browser, straightened my keyboard until it sat perfectly parallel to the monitor, and began my final week at Nichols Corporation exactly the way I'd begun every week before it. Calm. Efficient. Invisible.

No one in that building had any idea the countdown had already started.
