When My Boyfriend Left Me Bleeding for His Mistress Chapter 1

I stood in the marble lobby of the Meridian Hotel, my fingertips pressed against the cool stone wall as I listened to the world. Really listened, for the first time in eighteen years. The clink of champagne glasses. The soft rustle of silk against silk. The murmur of New York's media elite as they congratulated each other on their brilliance. Every sound was a miracle, a gift I had waited years to receive.

The experimental cochlear surgery had succeeded beyond Delaney's most optimistic predictions. For weeks, I had kept it secret—practicing lip-reading as always, pretending nothing had changed while I planned the perfect moment. Tonight was supposed to be that moment. I had the small velvet ring box in my clutch, hidden like a prayer. After I accepted the National Press Award for my exposé on corporate trafficking networks, I would find Killian in the crowd and ask him to marry me. I had imagined his face lighting up when I told him I could hear his voice for the first time.

"Coraline! There you are." Marcus Webb, Killian's closest friend, approached with his usual smooth smile. "Killian's been looking for you. He's in the private lounge with some investors. You know how he gets before these things—wants everything perfect."

I nodded, my heart lifting. "I'll find him. Thank you."

The private lounge was down the corridor, its heavy oak door slightly ajar. I recognized Killian's voice before I reached it—deep, confident, the voice I had fallen in love with when we were children on the same Brooklyn block. The voice I had protected when I threw myself between him and his father's baseball bat at ten years old. The voice I had lost my hearing to preserve.

I paused, my hand reaching for the handle. Then his words cut through me like glass.

"That deaf charity case I can't shake off—she's like a stray dog that followed me home and never left."

Laughter erupted from inside the room. I froze, my knuckles whitening against the door.

"Come on, Killian," another voice said. "You can't be serious about keeping her around. Not with Fallon in the picture."

"Fallon's different," Killian replied, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "She's... everything Coraline isn't. Plus, she's pregnant. What am I supposed to do?"

More laughter. "At least the award thing worked out. Fallon was thrilled when you told her she'd won."

"It wasn't hard to make it happen," Killian said dismissively. "A few calls, some donations to the right foundation. Coraline will never know."

My hand fell from the door. I stood in the corridor, perfectly still, as the world I had built collapsed into sound. The award—my award, for work that had nearly cost me my life—redirected to his mistress. The woman carrying his child. The woman who had everything I wasn't.

I walked to the nearest restroom and locked myself in a stall. I set my phone timer for eleven minutes. That was how long I would allow myself to process what I had just heard. I did not cry. I simply sat there, breathing, as eighteen years of devotion crumbled into dust.

When the timer chimed, I stood and dropped the velvet ring box into the trash bin. I washed my hands, checked my reflection, and walked back into the ballroom. From the back of the room, I watched as Fallon Clark—glamorous, radiant Fallon with her perfect smile and flat stomach—accepted the National Press Award. My award. Killian applauded from the front row, his face alight with pride.

I took out my phone and called my network's executive producer.

"I want the South Sudan assignment," I said when he answered. "The war correspondent position. I'm volunteering."

"Barnes, that's the most dangerous—"

"I know exactly what it is," I interrupted. "Send me the transfer papers. I'll sign them tonight."

I ended the call and moved through the rest of the gala like a ghost. I smiled. I nodded. I made small talk. Inside, I was already gone. When the event began winding down, I stepped outside for air, standing alone on the Manhattan sidewalk. I pressed my fingertips against the stone wall of the venue, feeling its solidity beneath my skin. I did not know that Fallon had spent the past hour inside, identifying the grief-drunk family members of the disgraced CEO from my trafficking exposé and feeding them lies. I did not know she had pointed them toward the exit where I stood. I only knew that the world of sound I had just entered was already ending.
