When My Boss Covered Up His Affair With the Intern Chapter 1

The Manhattan skyline glittered beneath a blanket of winter stars as I stepped onto the rooftop bar, the cold air biting at my cheeks. New Year's Eve. The final night of what I'd thought was a love story but would soon discover was merely a placeholder's tale.

I spotted Simon immediately, his tall frame leaning against the railing, his dark hair catching the golden light from the heat lamps. He turned as I approached, his smile warming me more than the nearby space heaters ever could.

"There you are," he said, pulling me close. "I was starting to think you'd stand me up for the biggest night of the year."

I laughed, the sound genuine despite the weight I'd been carrying. "Like I'd miss this. I just had to finish reviewing those merger documents for the Westfield case. You know how it is."

"I do." He pressed a kiss to my temple. "That's why you're the best."

The best. Not the one he loved. Not the one he chose. Just the best—a distinction that would soon reveal its hollow core.

The first firework exploded over the East River, a burst of gold and crimson that reflected in Simon's eyes. He checked his watch.

"Perfect timing," he murmured. "I need to make a quick call before the countdown. Be right back."

He disappeared into the crowd, leaving his phone on the small metal table between our drinks. I stared at it, a sleek black rectangle that suddenly seemed to pulse with secrets. When another firework burst overhead, I reached for it, intending to check the time.

The screen unlocked at my touch—he'd never changed his passcode from my birthday, a detail I'd once found endearing. Now, I wasn't sure what it meant. I opened the clock app, but a notification from his photo gallery caught my eye.

*New album created: A.V. - Private.*

My finger hovered over the notification. I shouldn't. I knew I shouldn't. But something—intuition, perhaps, or the quiet voice of the woman who'd been whispering warnings I'd ignored for months—propelled me forward.

I tapped the notification.

The album opened, and my world tilted sideways. Dozens of photographs filled the screen—a woman with honey-blonde hair and delicate features that mirrored my own, but somehow more ethereal, more effortless. Aylani Vasquez. I recognized her name from a framed photo in Simon's office that he'd claimed was a "law school friend."

I scrolled, my thumb moving mechanically as my heart constricted. Some photos were recent, taken in London. But others—many others—were dated during the three years Simon and I had been together. Notes accompanied some: *Miss you today*, *Remember this dress?*, *Still the most beautiful.*

The most beautiful. Not me. Never me.

A firework exploded directly overhead, its boom reverberating through my chest. I closed the album, replaced the phone exactly as I'd found it, and waited for Simon to return.

When he did, slipping his arm around my waist as the final countdown began, I smiled up at him. "Five, four, three..."

He pulled me closer as midnight struck, his lips finding mine beneath a shower of light and sound. The kiss was familiar, practiced—a perfect performance of love.

And in that moment, as the city celebrated new beginnings, I made my own silent resolution. I would end this. Not with tears or confrontations or the dramatic scene I perhaps deserved. I would simply end it, piece by piece, day by day, until there was nothing left but the professional courtesy of two colleagues who had once been something more.

I didn't know then that the woman in those photographs would soon walk into our office, into our lives, and force my hand in ways I couldn't imagine. I didn't know that Aylani Vasquez would become more than a ghost in a phone—she would become my reckoning.

But as Simon held me close, watching fireworks paint the sky, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: I was done being a replacement.
