For three years, Aria has learned Bradley’s every gesture—until 8:47, when his cuff twitches and she knows. Tonight, before two hundred wolves and visiting Alphas, her mate will reject her as Luna from the head table she arranged. When the words fall, the mark on her neck turns ice-cold. Yet beneath the public humiliation, something ancient stirs: royal blood she never knew she carried. Alpha Marcus Voss of Silverfang watches. A silent Lycan envoy sits at the far end. Rejection was meant to destroy her—but the power waking inside Aria may be the only answer.

When My Alpha Humiliated Me, I Awakened Royal Blood Chapter 1

Bradley straightened his cuffs at 8:47 on a Saturday night, and I knew.

Three years of watching him. Three years of tracking the small, mechanical tug of his fingers along the edge of a starched sleeve before he did something that served only himself. I set my wine glass down on the head table — the head table I had arranged, at the banquet I had planned, in front of the Alphas whose names I had personally written into the seating chart — and I felt my whole body go still.

He stood.

The great hall quieted. Two hundred wolves. Visiting Alpha Marcus Voss of Silverfang two seats to my left, watching Bradley with the polite, professional attention of a man who had come here to eat and leave. The Lycan envoy, a tall stranger I had not yet been introduced to, seated at the far end with a stillness that felt trained.

"I, Bradley, Alpha of Ironvale," my mate said, in the practiced timbre of a man who had rehearsed this in a mirror, "reject you, Aria, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not slowly. All at once, like someone had dropped a stone into a well inside my throat. The heat that had lived there for three years — the small, constant hum I had stopped noticing the way you stop noticing your own heartbeat — snapped off. Then the pain came. A ripping down the mate channel, jagged, hooked, biological. Something in my chest tore free of something else in my chest, and my ribs folded around the absence.

I doubled over the table. My hand caught the edge. My wine glass tipped and rolled and did not break.

"— and take Skyler Morales as my chosen Luna," Bradley continued, without pausing to see whether I was still upright. "The pack needs a real Luna to survive."

He reached for her hand. Skyler rose from the guest table where she had been seated — where I had seated her, three days ago, without knowing — and let him pull her forward. Her wolf-scent hit me even through the pain: pine and something sweeter, layered on his skin the way I had smelled her on him for weeks and told myself I was imagining.

I wasn't imagining.

I straightened. It cost me. My knees wanted to fold and my vision was doing something white at the edges, but I put both hands flat on the table and I pushed myself upright, and I looked at him.

"Then release me," I said.

My voice came out low. Lower than I meant. The hall heard it anyway.

"Formally. Now. In front of every Alpha at this table."

Bradley's mouth pulled at one corner. Not quite a smile. The look he wore when a pack member asked for something he did not intend to give.

"You'll be released when I decide, Aria."

"That isn't how the vow works."

"It's how it works tonight."

Marcus Voss shifted in his seat. Two chairs down, a Beta from the eastern packs set down his fork very carefully. Bradley felt the room tilt — I saw him feel it — and his jaw locked.

He raised his Alpha tone.

"Kneel."

It hit me the way a hand hits water. My knees went out from under me before my mind caught up. Stone floor. Both palms. The sound of my breath dragging into my lungs against the compulsion of his voice. I heard someone in the visiting delegation inhale sharply and go quiet.

"Congratulate her," Bradley said. "Aloud. So the pack hears."

Skyler took a small, rehearsed step forward. Her smile was the same one she wore at Sunday supply meetings. Warm. Practiced. She had been practicing this one for a while.

My dead mark pulsed once against my collarbone. Cold. Hollow. A door closing in an empty room.

Then still.

I lifted my head.

"Congratulations, Skyler," I said. My voice had no shape. No inflection. No inside. "May you serve Ironvale as it deserves."

She inclined her head, gracious. She did not know what I had just said. Neither did Bradley. Only I knew — and somewhere behind my sternum, in a place I could not name yet, something quiet and enormous heard me say it and did not disagree.

I stood.

I did not wait for permission. I turned my back on the head table, on my mate, on the woman wearing my future, and I walked toward the great doors of the hall in the silence of two hundred wolves who did not know what they had just watched.

Bradley's voice followed me across the stone.

"Omega quarters. Effective now. Mind-link severed. If she resists, drag her."

I did not stop walking. At the far end of the hall, the Lycan envoy set down his glass, lifted his head, and drew in one long, deliberate breath — as if he had just caught the edge of a scent he had not expected to find in this room.
