When His Mistress Tried to Harm Our Baby Chapter 1

I noticed the study door was locked when I went to hang up Elliott's jacket. It was strange—Elliott hated locked doors. He believed a tidy home was an open home, every surface clear and accessible. I'd never seen that particular door closed, let alone secured, in all our years together.

The jacket was still warm from his body as I lifted it from his shoulders at the dinner table. He'd mentioned a late meeting, something about quarterly projections. I folded it carefully over my arm, the way I always did, when my fingers brushed against something hard in the inner pocket.

A small brass key.

I stood in the hallway, key in hand, staring at the study door. Seven years of marriage had taught me to trust my husband. Seven years of rainstorm drives with cold medicine, of hand-crafted anniversary gifts, of a man who looked at me like I was his safe harbor. I should have put the key back.

Instead, I turned it in the lock.

The study was immaculate as always—leather-bound books aligned by height, the mahogany desk bare except for a single silver lamp. But the bottom drawer was slightly ajar, as if Elliott had been in a hurry. I knelt down, sliding it open.

Inside was a box. Not locked, just closed with a simple latch. My hands trembled slightly as I lifted the lid.

Photographs spilled out first. A younger Elliott—college-aged, his face softer, his smile unburdened—with his arm around a dark-haired woman. She was beautiful in that effortless way that made my chest tighten. Giselle. It had to be. The woman he'd dated before me, the one who'd left him heartbroken. The one he never talked about.

Beneath the photos were letters, written in a flowing script I didn't recognize. "My dearest Elliott," one began. "The nights I spend away from you are empty. I dream of your hands, your voice..." I didn't finish reading. I couldn't.

A pressed flower lay at the bottom of the box—a purple bloom I didn't know the name of, probably from some college formal. It was brittle now, its edges crumbling. But it had been saved. Treasured. Hidden.

I sat on the floor, my back against the desk, smoothing the back of my left hand with my right thumb. The gesture was automatic, something I'd done since childhood when the world felt too large and too sharp. I sat there for a long time, staring at the evidence of a love I'd never known existed.

Finally, I replaced everything exactly as I'd found it. The photographs aligned in their stack, the letters folded into their envelopes, the flower nestled at the bottom. I closed the box, slid the drawer shut, and locked the study door behind me.

In bed, I lay beside Elliott, listening to his even breathing. He slept with one hand flung above his head, vulnerable and trusting. I wanted to shake him awake, demand to know why he'd kept these relics of another woman. Why he'd locked them away like a guilty secret.

Instead, I stared at the ceiling until dawn broke, wondering how many other locked boxes existed in our marriage.
