When His Mistress Tried to Destroy Me, He Lost Everything Chapter 1

I woke alone on the second morning of my marriage. The silk sheets beside me were cold, the indentation of Jaden's body long gone. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our Manhattan penthouse, painting golden stripes across the hardwood floors. For a moment, I lay still, listening to the silence of what should have been our honeymoon morning.

I slipped from the bed, pulling on the hotel robe Jaden had left draped over a chair. The penthouse felt too quiet as I padded down the hallway, my bare feet silent on the plush carpet. Something felt off—a shift in the air, a wrongness I couldn't name.

Then I saw it: the guest room door, slightly ajar, a sliver of light spilling into the darkened hallway.

I didn't call out. Didn't announce myself. Instead, I moved forward with the same measured steps I'd used in boardrooms and negotiations. My hand reached for the door, and I pushed it open.

The scene inside froze my blood.

Clothes scattered across the floor—Jaden's shirt, Lennox's silk nightgown, a tangle of fabric that told a story my mind refused to process. On the bed, Jaden sat up abruptly, his face flushed with guilt and something else—relief? As if caught in a game he'd been playing for too long. Lennox curled against him, her eyes wide with practiced innocence, tears already forming.

"Soleil," Jaden started, his voice cracking. "It's not—we didn't—"

"It just happened," Lennox whispered, her voice trembling perfectly. "We were talking, and then... I don't know what came over us. Please, you have to understand..."

My hand rose to the base of my throat, a reflex I couldn't control. I felt the steady thrum of my pulse beneath my fingertips, the only thing that seemed real in this suddenly surreal moment. I looked at them—really looked—and saw not lovers caught in passion, but actors in a performance they'd been rehearsing for years.

"I want a divorce," I said.

The words came out calm, level, as if I were discussing the weather. Jaden's mouth fell open, his excuses dying on his lips. Lennox's tears stopped mid-stream, her mask slipping for just a fraction of a second before she recovered.

I turned away before either of them could respond, my decision already made.

In the master bedroom, I pulled out a single suitcase—the same one I'd brought to our first apartment eight years ago. I packed with precision: my passport, my grandmother's worn leather notebook, the few pieces of jewelry that were truly mine. Everything else—the designer clothes Jaden had bought, the wedding gifts, the life we'd built—I left behind.

Jaden followed me, his voice rising with each step. "Soleil, stop. You're overreacting. Lennox is family—she's been part of my life for twenty years. This was a mistake, nothing more. Don't throw away everything we've built over one moment of weakness."

I didn't look at him. Didn't engage. Each word he spoke only confirmed what I already knew: this wasn't a moment. It was a revelation.

At the front door, I paused just long enough to set my wedding ring on the entryway table. The diamond caught the light, throwing fractured rainbows across the white marble. Then I stepped through the doorway and pulled it closed behind me.

The lock clicked with a finality that silenced Jaden mid-sentence. I didn't look back.

Two hours later, I sat in a sparse one-bedroom apartment in Murray Hill—a place I'd rented with the last of my personal savings, money Jaden never knew I kept. The space was clean, impersonal, but it was mine. I opened my leather notebook and began to write.

Not grief. Not anger. Just figures, timelines, and the skeleton of the luxury lifestyle brand I'd been developing in secret for years. Each stroke of the pen felt like reclaiming a piece of myself, drawing a boundary that no one could cross.

By the time I closed the notebook three hours later, I had a pitch deck in my head and one name on my call list.

Daxton Herrera.

I dialed his number, my fingers steady on the screen. He answered on the second ring.

"Soleil Chapman," he said, his voice deep and controlled. "This is unexpected."

"I have a proposition," I replied, matching his tone. "A business opportunity."

There was a pause, and I could almost hear him processing the implications. "I'm listening."

I outlined my concept—the brand, the market positioning, the potential for global expansion. His questions were sharp, probing, exactly what I'd expected from the man who'd been my academic rival for years.

"When can we meet?" he asked finally.

"Thursday," I said.

"Wednesday," he countered, a hint of challenge in his voice.

Another pause, and then: "Wednesday."

As I hung up, I realized my hand had moved to my throat again. But this time, it wasn't to check my pulse—it was to feel the steady, certain rhythm of my future taking shape.
