Chapter 3

He knocked at ten forty-seven.

I know because I had just looked at my phone — not waiting for anything, just the reflex of a person who has spent three years being available — and the time was right there on the screen when the sound came through the door.

I didn't move for a moment. I just stood in my kitchen in the dark, holding a glass of water, and listened to the silence after the knock.

Then I went to the door.

Hector was still in his work clothes. No coat this time. Jacket open, tie loosened, the kind of undone that happens when a man has been sitting in a car working himself up to something for longer than he planned. He looked at me the way he had looked at me three days ago in this same hallway — like he was recalculating something, like the numbers weren't coming out the way they were supposed to.

His eyes were hard.

"Who is he."

Not a question. I noticed that.

"You know who he is," I said. "You've met him."

"I know who he is." His jaw was tight. "I'm asking what he is to you."

I leaned against the doorframe. The hallway light was doing that thing it always did after ten — flickering slightly, the bulb two weeks past needing to be replaced. I had been meaning to ask the super. I had been meaning to do a lot of things.

"He's my friend," I said. "He's been my friend since we were thirteen."

"That's not what the photo looked like."

"No," I said. "I don't suppose it did."

Something moved across his face. Not anger — anger I knew, anger I could read. This was something rawer than that. Something that looked almost like fear, which I had never seen on Hector Kennedy before and which I did not know what to do with.

"You moved on fast," he said. "That's all I'm saying."

"Is it."

"He was waiting for you." His voice had an edge now. "Wasn't he. This whole time. Just — waiting."

I looked at him for a long moment. The flickering light. The loosened tie. The man who had never once introduced me as his girlfriend at a single event in three years, standing in the hallway of my Queens studio at ten forty-seven at night, asking me to account for a photograph.

Something in my chest went very still.

"You want to talk about waiting?" I said.

He opened his mouth.

"No." I pushed off the doorframe. "You came here. So we're going to talk. But we're going to talk about the right things."

I didn't invite him in. We stood in the doorway, which felt right — neither in nor out, the same place we had always been.

"Our anniversary," I said. "You remember what I did that night? After you called?"

His expression shifted. "Em —"

"I sat at that table for an hour. I ate dinner alone. I paid the bill and I tipped twenty percent and I took a cab home to your apartment." I kept my voice level. "And then I did what I always did. I told myself it was the last time, and then I waited for you to make it up to me, and then I let you."

"The situation with Dior was —"

"It was the fourth time in eight months." I watched his face. "Did you know that? Four times you left something we had planned because she needed you somewhere else. The Whitfield gala. The benefit in April. Your mother's dinner in February where I sat in the car for two hours because you said you'd be right back." I paused. "And the thing is, I never said a word. Because I understood your obligations. Because I knew how your world worked. Because I loved you and I thought that was enough to make the rest of it bearable."

Hector was very still.

"You kept me hidden for three years," I said. "No introductions. No photos. No — nothing. I was the woman you came home to and the woman you never brought anywhere, and I told myself that was temporary. That you were working up to it. That the right moment was coming." My voice didn't shake. I was proud of that. "The right moment never came, Hector. And somewhere along the way I stopped being your girlfriend and started being your secret, and those are not the same thing."

The hallway was very quiet.

"You don't get to stand here," I said, "and ask me about Braylon. You don't have that right. You never had the right to keep me hidden and call it love."

He looked at me for a long time. I watched him search for something — the right argument, the right angle, the version of this conversation where he came out ahead. That was the thing about Hector. He was brilliant at finding the angle.

He didn't find it this time.

"I was going to tell them," he said finally. His voice was quieter now. "I was working toward it."

"I know you believe that."

"Emryn —"

"I know you believe that," I said again. "And I'm not angry at you for it anymore. I'm really not. But believing something and doing it are different things, and I spent three years waiting for the doing, and I'm done waiting."

He looked at me like I had said something in a language he almost spoke.

Then he straightened. Buttoned his jacket. The composure came back over him the way it always did — like a door closing, smooth and final.

"Take care of yourself," he said.

He had no idea those were my words. Or maybe he did. I couldn't tell anymore.

I watched him walk down the hallway and disappear around the corner. I stood there until I heard the street door open and close below.

Then I went inside and sat on the edge of my bed and breathed.

Monday morning I got to the Kennedy Group at eight.

I had written the resignation letter on Sunday, three drafts, each one shorter than the last. The final version was four sentences. Professional. Clean. No explanation beyond the standard language about pursuing other opportunities. I had learned, in three years of navigating this building, that the less you said, the less they could use.

HR was on the fourteenth floor. I took the stairs.

The woman at the desk was new — I didn't recognize her, which made it easier. I handed her the envelope and my access badge and signed the form she slid across the desk. She asked if I wanted to speak with anyone in management. I said no. She said they would process my final paycheck within two weeks. I said thank you.

I took the elevator back down to the seventh floor to clear my desk.

It didn't take long. Three years in that office and what I had was a desk plant, two notebooks, a coffee mug, and a framed print I had bought at a street market in Dumbo the first month I started. I put them in a tote bag. I deleted my personal files from the desktop. I straightened the chair.

Across the open-plan floor, I felt someone watching.

Serena was at her desk by the window, both hands around her coffee cup, looking at me with an expression I couldn't quite name. Not pity. Something more complicated than that. She had been at the Kennedy Group longer than I had. She had seen things. I knew she had seen things — the way Dior moved through this office, the way certain conversations stopped when I walked into a room, the way the air changed whenever Dior came by to see Hector and passed through our floor on the way.

Serena had seen all of it and said nothing.

I understood why. I didn't blame her. Self-preservation was a reasonable choice, and this was not a building that rewarded loyalty to the wrong person.

I picked up my tote bag.

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Looked down at her coffee.

I took the elevator to the lobby.

The revolving door pushed me out onto the sidewalk and the city came up around me — the noise, the cold, the ordinary Tuesday morning of a street that had no idea what had just happened. I stood on the pavement for a moment and looked up at the building. Forty-two floors of glass and steel and the Kennedy name etched above the entrance in letters that had always been slightly too large.

I shifted the tote bag on my shoulder.

I turned and walked toward the subway, and I didn't look back.

Chapter 4

I didn't know any of it was happening.

That's the part that stays with me now — how ordinary those days were. I was sleeping better than I had in years. I was eating real meals at my own kitchen table. I had started running again, just short loops around the neighborhood in the early morning, nothing serious, just enough to feel like my body belonged to me again. I was, for the first time in a long time, okay.

I didn't know that three miles away, someone was using my name.

I'll never know which.

What I know is that she sat down at a terminal — not her own, not anything traceable to her directly, because Dior Martinez did not make that kind of mistake — and she typed in my username and my password, and the system let her in. Just like that. Three years of my professional life, still open, still accessible, still wearing my name like a coat she had borrowed without asking.

She went straight to the project files.

The waterfront development was the Kennedy Group's most valuable asset in play — a flagship project, years in the making, the kind of thing that got discussed in closed rooms with NDAs on the table before anyone said a word. I had worked on the early marketing materials. I knew the file structure. I knew where the blueprints lived.

She knew I knew. That was the point.

She copied the files. All of them — the architectural schematics, the site surveys, the financial projections, the contractor agreements. She was thorough. She had always been thorough. The metadata would show the transfer originating from my former workstation, timestamped during my final weeks at the company, as if I had been quietly copying files in the days before I walked out. As if I had been planning it all along.

As if I had been exactly the kind of person Hector would eventually be told I was.

I was in my kitchen making coffee. The good kind, the slow kind, the kind I made now because I had time and no one else's schedule to accommodate. The morning light was coming through the window at the angle I liked. I had a book open on the counter. I was, I think, almost happy.

My phone was quiet.

It would not stay quiet for long.

Chapter 5

The call came on a Friday afternoon.

I was at my kitchen table with a freelance brief spread out in front of me, a pen behind my ear, a second cup of coffee going cold at my elbow. The number on my screen was one I still knew by heart — the Kennedy Group's main line, not Hector's cell, not his assistant's direct extension. The main line. The one that meant something official was happening.

I let it ring twice before I answered.

It was his assistant, Marcus. His voice was careful in the way voices get when someone has been told exactly what to say and exactly how to say it. He asked if I was available to meet with Mr. Kennedy at the Tribeca apartment that evening. Not the office. The apartment. I noted that. I said yes.

I didn't know why. I told myself it was closure. I told myself I was done being afraid of conversations.

I put the pen down and looked at the brief for a long moment. Then I closed the folder.

"Sit down," he said.

I sat.

He didn't. He stood on the other side of the coffee table and looked at me for a moment — that recalculating look, the one I had seen in my doorway two weeks ago, but harder now. Colder. Something had happened to his face in the time since I'd last seen him. Something had set.

He opened the folder.

"The Kennedy Group's waterfront development files," he said. "Architectural schematics. Site surveys. Financial projections. Contractor agreements." He turned the folder toward me. "All of it transferred from a workstation on the seventh floor using your login credentials. Timestamped across the last two weeks of your employment."

I looked at the pages. I looked at my name in the access logs, clean and unambiguous, repeated across a dozen entries.

"A USB drive was recovered from your former desk," he continued. "It contained a copy of the same files. The originals were confirmed at Whitmore and Associates by Thursday morning."

The room was very quiet.

"The board has been briefed," he said. "The legal team has reviewed the evidence. The damage is in the eight figures." A pause. "I made the decision not to press charges."

I looked up at him.

"That decision cost me," he said. "Politically. With the board. With people I need." His voice was even. Controlled. The voice he used in rooms where emotion was a liability. "I want you to understand what it cost me to protect you."

Something moved through my chest. Not gratitude.

"I didn't do this," I said.

He looked at me. Just looked.

"Hector." I kept my voice steady. "I didn't take those files. I don't have a relationship with Whitmore and Associates. I have never spoken to anyone at that firm."

"Your credentials were used."

"My credentials were never deactivated. Anyone with access to that system —"

"The USB drive was in your desk."

"I haven't been in that office in three weeks."

He closed the folder. Slowly. The way you close something when you've already decided it doesn't need to stay open.

"I've been asking myself," he said, "how I didn't see it."

I went still.

"The six times we ran into each other." His voice had shifted — quieter now, into that register I knew, the one that used to mean something else entirely. "I thought they were chance. I thought — " He stopped. "I've been asking myself whether any of it was chance. Whether you knew who I was before the cab in the rain. Whether the bookstore was planned. Whether you were patient enough to wait for the right moment and I was — " He looked at the window. "Convenient."

The word landed like something physical.

I sat with it. I let it sit. I looked at the man I had spent three years loving in secret, in the apartment where I had slept beside him and cooked in his kitchen and kept my photograph in a drawer so no one who visited would see it, and I listened to him tell me that he now believed I had manufactured the whole of it.

He turned back to me.

"Did you ever love me?" he asked. "Or was I just access?"

The candle shelf was empty. The nightstand drawer across the room was closed. The key I had left on the kitchen counter was gone — replaced, probably, the same week I left.

I thought about the anniversary dinner. The four times in eight months. The three years of being the woman he came home to and never brought anywhere. I thought about sitting on the subway back to Queens with my suitcase and my photograph and my quiet, careful grief.

I thought about how much it had cost me to love him. How much I had given, and how little of it he had ever been able to see.

And now this.

I stood up.

"I'm not going to answer that," I said.

His jaw tightened.

"Not because it isn't worth answering." I picked up my bag. "But because you've already decided. And I've spent three years trying to be enough for a man who kept me hidden, and I'm not going to spend one more minute trying to prove something to you in the apartment where you kept me a secret."

I walked to the door.

"Emryn."

I stopped. I didn't turn around.

"I'm not pressing charges," he said again. Like it was a gift. Like it was the thing I should be holding onto.

I opened the door.

"Thank you for that," I said. And I meant it, and it cost me nothing, because I was already somewhere else.

I took the elevator down. I walked through the lobby. The doorman said good night and I said good night back and the revolving door pushed me out into the cold and the city came up around me, indifferent and enormous and ongoing.

I stood on the pavement for a moment.

Then I started walking.

I didn't cry. Not then. The grief was there — I could feel it, the specific weight of it, the shape of what had just been said to me in that quiet, intimate voice. But underneath it, something else. Something I didn't have a name for yet.

It felt, almost, like the beginning of something.

I walked toward the subway. The city moved around me. Somewhere behind me, in a Tribeca apartment with an empty candle shelf, Hector Kennedy stood alone with his folder full of evidence and his decision not to press charges and his question that I had not answered.

I didn't look back.
