The London was bussing this morning. Maya Bennett's heels clicked against the hospital corridor as she made her way to the clinical labs, her white coat around her shoulders. Coffee in hand, notes in the other, she barely noticed anyone around her. Medical school was relentless, she couldn't wait to graduate, leaving no little room for distractions .
Her phone buzzed. A text from Josh. Don't forget we are watching starwars tonight!
Maya smiled faintly. Josh is handsome, rich, and endlessly patient i would say. He lived in Bath, a city of Georgian terraces and quiet riverside streets. Six months together, and despite their closeness, she had never let herself be intimate. She had been too busy with school and work that paid her bills and kept her independent. Every time the conversation about sex came up, small arguments followed. Josh was sweet and understanding, but he wasn't blind to her hesitation.
It's not about him, she reminded herself. It's about timing, and I'm not ready. Not yet.
By midmorning, Maya's mind shifted back to the corporate world. She had another meeting at Thoreau Systems, the same firm where she had met Lucas Thoreau two weeks ago. That brief encounter still lingered in her mind his eye and calm posture, the unsettling messages that followed.
Arriving at Thoreau Systems, the elevator was quiet Lucas Thoreau was already there, his smell could be perceived from miles away, and his presence filled the room without speaking.
Maya's heartbeat didn't skip, but she noticed him. He was watching her, silently noting how she placed her bag, opened her laptop, and settled into her chair.
"Good morning, Ms Bennett," he said, calm and precise.
"Morning, Mr Thoreau," she replied.
The meeting began efficiently. Every question Lucas asked was about the project timelines, compliance, and medical content accuracy but Maya couldn't ignore the way he observed her.
Maya caught herself doing the same. Observing him. CEO energy, controlled gestures, precision in everything he did.She reminded herself It's work. Nothing more.
After the meeting, she stepped aside with Nadia.
"You were incredible," Nadia whispered. "Did you notice how Lucas keeps watching you? Like... he's studying you?"
Maya shrugged. "He's a CEO of course he looks at everyone that's all."
Nadia smirked knowingly. "Uh-huh. That's all." I smell love in the air though she laughed
Nadia I am dating have you forgotten
Maya let it drop. She couldn't explain the chill that ran through her whenever Lucas looked at her.
That evening, Maya sat on the small balcony of her London flat, overlooking rooftops and the occasional taxi weaving through the streets. Josh's text earlier had made her smile, a faint comfort in the quiet evening.
Her phone buzzed. you looked stunning today couldn't keep my eyes off you.
Maya smiled just looking at the text .
Mr thoreau, she typed. You need to stop sending all these messages. I wanted to ask if You've never met me before now? she typed. Surely... same school, same area...
No. Never.
Maya exhaled. He claimed never to have seen her before yet he watched her with an almost uncanny attention. It unsettled her.
What are you trying to accomplish? sending your employee a message at night she typed cautiously.
Maya leaned back in her chair. Their six months together had been safe, predictable. She appreciated the normalcy he brought. Yet something about Lucas lingered in her mind unsettling, intriguing, impossible to ignore. Maybe because she felt a Connection every time she set her eyes upon him, like something was actually drawing her close to him
Why am I thinking about him when I have Josh? she whispered aloud. She didn't answer. She couldn't. The unknown, the tension, the faint chill in her chest that was enough The next few days were a careful balance. Maya immersed herself in studies, hospital rounds, and freelance consulting. Josh's messages were grounding, his calls warm and funny. And yet, the tension of Lucas's observation hung in the background, undeniable.
Every glance in the office, every email, every small interaction made her hyper-aware. She was aware that Lucas was watching, that he noticed habits, and behaviours she thought she hid.
And Lucas? He was unaware that Maya was dating Josh. The boyfriend she adored, the man she fought with over little things, the anchor of her life Lucas did not know. All he had was a curious, intelligent woman who worked professionally, efficiently, and without distraction. He had no idea of the ties between Maya and Josh, no idea that she belonged in someone else 's orbit.
Yet even without knowing, Lucas waited for an opportunity
The festive season was fast approaching. Lights glimmered along London streets, and shop windows were decorated in bright reds and golds. Maya Bennett, however, felt none of the cheer. Between hospital rotations, assignments, and freelance consulting, she had barely noticed the snow settling on the city's edges.
Josh, on the other hand, was already planning. Love had blinded him, as Maya often teased herself silently, and he had made arrangements months in advance. Flight tickets were booked for Maya to come over to Bath. He wanted everything perfect. A holiday together. No arguments. No distance. Just them.
He couldn't wait to meet Maya, he was so obsessed that he planned the visit months away before the holiday .he believed that the far distance was hurting their relationship and he couldn't leave it, if he did nothing about it.
Maya's thoughts drifted to Sophie, her best friend and Josh's sister. Though Sophie was always on trips cause of her influential work she still makes time for Maya.
Sophie was literally the kind of friend who knows all the big guys in London.
She was fine, tall and couldn't miss gym for a day, her level of lifestyle attracted connections to her doorstep.
I obviously remember Sophie's last relationship she was travelling from Sussex to the USA to support her man's games. Their breakup made the internet i am literally no match in social life to her.
Sophie lived in Sussex, a few hours away, and was planning to move to London after the holidays. Josh had insisted she stay with Maya or Nadia once she relocated, reasoning that it would put his mind at rest knowing his sister was near Maya, and it would reassure him that things remained safe and orderly.
Sophie was travelling to Bath a day before Maya's arrival to meet her brother for the holidays. The three of them would be together for the first time in months, and Josh was practically vibrating with excitement.
The night before her flight, Maya's phone rang.
Lucas Thoreau.
She frowned. Late-night calls were unusual from him.
"Hello?" Maya said cautiously.
"Ms Bennett," he began, casual yet precise, "do you have a few minutes?"
She glanced at the clock: 10:45 PM. Why now? she thought, but curiosity got the better of her.
"Sure," she replied.
The conversation began formally, discussing the latest updates on the wellness project. But soon, the dialogue shifted. Lucas's tone softened, not in a romantic way, but something warmer like two people finding a rare, unexpected rhythm in conversation.
Maya found herself laughing more freely than she had in weeks. They discussed deadlines, quirks of the app, and even a minor hiccup in content compliance. The conversation flowed naturally. They joked about late-night work habits and the quirks of London commuting.
Hours passed unnoticed. When they finally checked the time, it was 11:30 PM.
"You know," Lucas said lightly, "we could continue this... somewhere quieter."
Maya raised an eyebrow. "Meaning?"
"I mean... my place. Just to finish the discussion. More comfortable."
She laughed softly, shaking her head. "Not tonight, Mr Thoreau. I need my sleep."
He didn't push. Simply let the comment linger. "Very well. Safe night, Ms Bennett."
"You too," she replied. Hanging up, she felt a strange flutter of something intrigue, curiosity, perhaps the tension she hadn't realised had been building. She shook her head. It's just conversation. Nothing more.
The next morning, Maya packed her bag for Bath. She was excited to see Josh, to finally have a calm, festive holiday after months of school and work. London faded behind her as the plane sped off, and she allowed herself a rare moment of relaxation.
She didn't notice the subtle twist fate had laid before her.
Unbeknownst to Maya, Josh, in his excitement, had extended his holiday invitation to Lucas Thoreau as well. He didn't know Lucas had any connection to Maya that Lucas was a respected professional, a friend from Paris, they attended the same school, played on the football team and someone interesting to spend a few holiday days with.
Lucas, of course, accepted the invitation. Who misses an opportunity to meet a long-time friend?
Maya boarded the plane, her mind buzzing with Josh, Sophie, the holidays, and the rare freedom of leaving London behind. She didn't know that Lucas would soon be on the same path, in the same space with her
Maya leaned against the window, headphones on, soft classical music filling the space between her thoughts. She thought about the past six months Josh's patience, the fights they'd had about intimacy, the late nights she had spent in libraries and hospitals instead of in his arms.
And she thought of Lucas Thoreau. Just a professional acquaintance... nothing more. And yet, somehow, the memory of their conversation last night lingered, unbidden.
Why do I feel like I'm missing something? She asked herself quietly.
She shook her head. Focus. Bath. Josh. Holidays. Nothing else.
But fate, as it often did, had other plans.
Meanwhile, in a sleek apartment overlooking the Thames, Lucas reviewed his calendar for the holiday week. London, Bath... coincidences. Perhaps not. Perhaps opportunities.
He made no decisions yet. No impulsive moves. Observation first, patience always. He noted the little details he had learned about her routines, her habits, her calm efficiency and wondered what would happen when she was in a different environment, a more relaxed setting.
Lucas Thoreau didn't know about Josh and Maya. Not yet. And that was perfect.
Because unknowing created more possibilities.
By the time Maya arrived in Bath, the city sparkled under festive lights. Cobblestone streets, warm lamplight, distant carols. The train station was nearly empty, a crisp winter night enveloping her. Sophie had arrived a day before, Josh was already waiting at the airport, and for the first time in months, Maya felt a rare sense of anticipation.
She had no idea Lucas Thoreau was on his way as well.
And she didn't know that the holiday season, which should have been calm, cosy, and predictable, was about to become a subtle game of observation, calculation, and unseen connections a game that would test her, Josh, and even Sophie in ways she couldn't yet imagine.
The winter sky over London was a pale silver as Maya boarded the plane to Bath. She was tired from weeks of hospital rotations, exams, and freelance work, but her excitement to see Josh was undeniable. Six months of dating, yet this was their first proper holiday together a chance to reconnect, to escape the stress and distance that had marked their relationship.
Josh had been persistent, sending reminders, teasing messages, and even insisting that Sophie, stay with her in London after the holidays so he could feel at ease. Sophie was already in Bath to meet Josh.
Josh was literally the sweetest soul one will think of more gentle and always there to make me happy but sometimes I feel he loves me a little too much like I love him.
Whenever he tries to come close to me, I feel so awkward that I can't open myself up to him. Maybe he is suspecting I'm cheating which I'm not , I believe sex should happen when one is ready , it is literally all that Josh cares for at this point ,he talks about it always I am tired.
Maya first met Josh during her hospital internship. She was assigned to a surgical rotation, balancing exhaustion and fascination, while Josh was completing a management internship at the hospital. He was kind, confident, and had a quiet charm that didn't try to dominate her attention but he was persistent.
Their first conversation had been over a spilt cup of coffee in the hospital cafeteria. She had been flustered, and he had offered her a napkin with a teasing smile. From that moment, sparks had been subtle but undeniable.
Over months, their interactions had grown study sessions turned into walks in the park, late-night calls after long hospital shifts, and the sharing of small, intimate details of their lives. Josh's patience had been remarkable. And yet, there were gaps, unspoken tensions. Maya had been focused entirely on her career, often too tired or preoccupied to meet his emotional or physical needs.
By the time they arrived in Bath, the tension between them was palpable. Josh's longing, paired with Maya's stress and suppressed desire, had been simmering for months. That first evening,
Hey," he said, pulling her into a hug. "You've been working too hard."
"I know," Maya replied softly. "It's just... rotations, studies..."
Josh's hand traced hers. "I know, but this holiday, you and me. No distractions. Promise?"
Maya nodded, leaning against him. Safe. Predictable. Grounded.
Dinner with Josh and Sophie, his sister and Maya's best friend, brought warmth and laughter. Sophie teased Maya lightly about Josh's obsessive planning for the holiday.
"Honestly, Josh, you act like Christmas won't happen if you don't micromanage it," Sophie laughed.
Josh shot her a mock glare. "Someone's got to make sure she's pampered."
Maya smiled, shaking her head. She enjoyed Sophie's teasing, the easy camaraderie. It made Bath feel like home, after a quiet dinner with Sophie, Maya felt herself melting under Josh's gaze.
"I've missed you," Josh whispered as they walked through the frost-lit streets.
"I missed you too," Maya admitted softly.
He stopped and cupped her face gently, his eyes searching hers. "I can't wait anymore," he said, voice low. "I want you."
Maya hesitated, the words of caution echoing in her mind. She had been careful, patient not ready to give herself fully. But Josh's intensity, his sincerity, the months of longing, and the ache she felt from missing him overwhelmed her.
That night, after months of restraint, she gave in. Josh broke her virginity, carefully, tenderly, with whispered reassurances. She had resisted at first, unsure, frightened even, but the longing she had for him, the connection they shared, made her surrender. The slow kisses and touching and carelessness of her breast made her wet in no time, every inch in her froze, By the time the night ended, Maya felt a mix of exhaustion, relief, and intimacy she hadn't known before. The sex made Josh more attracted to Maya, so he couldn't stop touching her lips
The holiday had begun, and for the first time, she allowed herself to completely forget her past with Lucas Thoreau
Two days later, the calm of Bath shifted. Lucas Thoreau arrived unexpectedly, stepping off a private flight, impeccably dressed, calm, and commanding in a way that made the air around him tense.
Josh, unaware of Lucas's history with Maya, casually introduced him during the evening gathering:
"Lucas, meet Sophie, and... Maya. My girlfriend.
Lucas: yeah I have actually met Maya and of course i know Sophie. Maya she has a temporary job at my company didn't know you guys were together
Time froze. Maya's mind blanked. She looked at Lucas and remembered the blurred memory from that first night in Bath, a moment she had long buried. The man who had been a shadow in her past was now here, observing her again.
Lucas's eyes scanned the room. Then he noticed Josh's subtle tension, the way his jaw tightened slightly, the flicker of possessiveness in his gaze. Lucas smiled faintly not maliciously, but reserved
Josh tried to maintain casual conversation, but his jealousy was evident. Lucas was polite, charming, and intelligent, and Maya couldn't help but notice it, though she tried to suppress her memories. Publicly, she kept her distance, not giving Lucas the warmth or adoration he might have expected from their past encounter.
Lucas, however, was patient. He observed. He noted every glance, every smile, every hesitation. His fascination was no longer just professional.
Later that evening, after a minor argument with Josh over plans, Maya stepped outside for some air. The cold winter night bit at her cheeks, and she leaned against the balcony railing, exhaling slowly.
Lucas appeared quietly, his presence commanding yet subtle.
"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said softly.
Maya's heart skipped, her mind flooded with memories she hadn't thought about in years.
"Lucas..." she whispered. "I... I forgot..."
He took a step closer. "I know. That's the point."
Then he grabbed her by the neck and gave her a forceful kiss.
It was deliberate, unhurried, consuming. The kiss was a mixture of past and present all the debates, the arguments, the observation of her through high school, and the years of quiet attention he had paid to her.
"I've watched you," he whispered after, voice low. "Every debate. Every conversation. Every moment I could. And I've adored you all along."
He repeated the words softly, almost to himself: I adore you. I adore you...
Maya felt torn between memories, guilt, and desire
Meanwhile, Sophie, always sharp and observant, noticed Lucas's quiet attention. She laughed at his subtle jokes, tried to catch his glance, and found herself drawn to him more than she had expected.
Unbeknownst to Maya, the holiday triangle had begun forming: Josh, Lucas, Sophie. Tensions, obsessions, and desire all mingled in the festive glow of Bath.
By the end of the night, the calm holiday Maya had anticipated was gone. She was caught between past and present, desire and guilt, while Lucas silently watched, calculated, and waited.
