After My Husband Chose His Adopted Daughter Over Me, I Vanished Forever Chapter 1

I fractured my hand on a Wednesday morning, three weeks after Nathan and I signed the papers for our eighth remarriage.

It happened in the kitchen. I was reaching for a coffee mug on the top shelf when my wrist caught the edge of the cabinet door. The porcelain slipped. I tried to catch it. My hand smashed against the granite counter instead of the mug. The crack was immediate and loud, like a branch snapping.

I stood there for a moment, watching my fingers swell. The pain was sharp and clean. It felt honest in a way nothing else in the penthouse did.

I didn't call Nathan.

I wrapped my hand in a kitchen towel, grabbed my purse with my good hand, and walked to the elevator. Maria, one of the household staff, tried to stop me in the foyer. She looked alarmed. "Mrs. Wheeler, let me call Mr. Wheeler. He can—"

"I'm fine," I said. "Just going to the hospital."

I drove one-handed to Seattle General. Stick shift. It hurt like hell, but I made it. I parked in the visitor lot, walked through the automatic doors, and stood in line at the registration desk like everyone else. The woman behind the counter looked at my towel-wrapped hand and pushed a clipboard toward me.

I filled out the forms. Next of kin: Nathan Wheeler. Emergency contact: Nathan Wheeler. I stared at his name for a few seconds, then signed the bottom.

They took me to a room. A nurse unwrapped the towel. My hand was purple and twice its normal size. She asked if I wanted to call anyone. I said no. She brought me ice and a consent form for X-rays. I signed that too.

Nathan arrived forty minutes later.

I heard him before I saw him — his voice in the hallway, clipped and demanding. "Where is she? Violeta Wheeler. My wife."

The door opened. He filled the frame. Tall, dark-haired, expensive suit slightly rumpled like he'd left a meeting in the middle. His eyes went straight to my hand.

"Why didn't you call me?" His voice was tight. Not angry. Something else. Something I used to think was concern.

"I handled it," I said.

He crossed the room in three strides. "You drove yourself? With a broken hand?"

"Fractured," I said. "And yes."

"Violeta." He said my name the way he always did when he thought I was being unreasonable. Like I was a problem requiring management. "You should have called."

I looked at him. Really looked. The sharp line of his jaw. The faint scar above his left eyebrow from a training accident in Afghanistan. The mouth I used to kiss. I felt nothing.

"I didn't think of it," I said.

His face changed. Just a flicker. Like I'd said something in a language he didn't speak.

"What do you mean you didn't think of it?"

I shrugged with my good shoulder. "I just didn't."

The nurse came back before he could respond. She said the surgeon was ready. Nathan tried to follow me into the pre-op area. I told him to wait outside.

He waited.

I sat in the sterile white room while they prepped me for a minor procedure — realigning the bones, pinning the fracture. The anesthesiologist asked if I was nervous. I said no. She smiled and said most people were.

I wasn't nervous. I was calm. Calmer than I'd been in months.

When I came out an hour later, my hand wrapped in a cast from knuckles to mid-forearm, Nathan was standing in the hallway. But he wasn't alone.

Ainsley was there.

She was pressed against his side, her face buried in his chest. Her shoulders were shaking. Nathan's hand was on her back, smoothing circles the way you'd comfort a child.

"She had a nightmare," Nathan said when he saw me. His voice was defensive. Like I'd already accused him of something. "She called. She was scared."

Ainsley lifted her face. Her eyes were red. Tears streaked her cheeks. She looked at me and then looked away, shrinking into Nathan like I was the threat.

I stopped walking. I stood there in my hospital gown and cast, holding my discharge papers in my good hand, and watched my husband cradle his adopted daughter.

I waited for the anger. The jealousy. The white-hot rage that used to tear through me every time he chose her.

Nothing came.

Just a hollow, echoing stillness.

"I'm going home," I said.

Nathan looked up. "I'll drive you."

"No need." I walked past them both. Down the hall. Through the automatic doors. Into the parking lot.

I sat in my car for a long time before I started the engine. My hand throbbed. The painkillers hadn't kicked in yet.

I drove home one-handed again. The penthouse was dark when I arrived. Nathan had gone to Ainsley's apartment. I knew without asking.

I stood on the balcony and looked out over Seattle. The city lights blurred. Not from tears. Just exhaustion.

My phone buzzed. Private number. Secure line.

I answered.

"Dr. Morrison." Diane Castellano's voice was steady and professional as always. "Project Aegis passed final field testing. Transfer approval is confirmed. Are you ready to proceed?"

I looked at the lights. At the penthouse behind me. At the guest room where Nathan would sleep when he finally came home.

"Yes," I said.

"Eleven days," Diane said. "We'll handle everything. Digital footprint, records, extraction team. You'll be gone before anyone knows to look."

"Understood," I said.

She paused. "Dr. Morrison — are you sure?"

I closed my eyes. Opened them.

"I'm sure."

I hung up.

I stood on the balcony until the sky started to lighten. My hand hurt. My chest felt empty. But my mind was clear.

Eleven days.

Then I would disappear.
