Unmasking Husband's Affair Chapter 1

The soft glow of our dining room lamps cast warm shadows across the table as I cut into my chicken parmesan. Emma was telling us about her day at school, something about a science project on volcanoes, her small voice animated with excitement. It was one of those rare moments when everything felt perfect—my daughter's laughter, the aroma of garlic and tomato sauce, Mitchell sitting across from me with his blue button-down rolled to the elbows.

Then Mitchell's phone buzzed.

It wasn't the first time tonight. The device had been vibrating intermittently throughout dinner, each time pulling his attention away from Emma's story. I watched his eyes flick toward his pocket, then back to us, a practiced smile returning to his face.

"Sorry," he said, reaching for his water glass. "Work never stops."

I smiled back, used to the interruptions. Seven years of marriage had taught me to accept that Mitchell's career came with certain demands. But when his phone buzzed again—the third time in fifteen minutes—something inside me snapped.

"Who keeps texting you?" I asked, my voice light, teasing. "Your boss can't wait until morning?"

Emma giggled, mimicking my tone. "Is it Mr. Anderson again, Daddy?"

Mitchell's phone buzzed once more. This time, I reached for it playfully, my fingers inches from his pocket. "Let me see if it's important."

The reaction was immediate and startling. Mitchell's hand shot out, gripping my wrist with unexpected force. His smile vanished.

"It's fine," he said, voice suddenly tight. "Just work emails. They can wait until after dinner."

I withdrew my hand slowly, a strange chill running through me. Mitchell had never reacted this way before. His eyes darted between me and Emma, who had stopped giggling and was watching us with confusion.

"Sorry," he added, releasing my wrist and running a hand through his dark hair. "Didn't mean to grab you like that."

"Work emails?" I repeated, studying his face.

"Of course," he said, forcing a laugh. "What else would it be?"

---

Later that evening, after Emma had been tucked into bed with stories about brave princesses who saved themselves, I sat on the edge of our California king, folding laundry. Mitchell had disappeared into the master bathroom for his nightly shower, steam billowing under the door as water pounded against tile.

His phone sat on the nightstand, silent for once.

I folded a stack of his undershirts, thinking about dinner. Something felt off. Mitchell had been distant for weeks now, but tonight there was something new—a tension in his shoulders, a defensiveness I hadn't seen before.

The phone screen lit up.

A message preview appeared: "Brooklyn: Miss you already. Last night was amazing. Can't wait to see you again ❤️"

My hands froze mid-fold.

Brooklyn? Who was Brooklyn?

The phone buzzed again. Another message from the same name: "Thank you for dinner last night. That restaurant was incredible. You always know how to spoil me."

Last night. Mitchell had told me he was working late at the office last night.

I set down his shirt carefully, as if it might shatter under my touch. My heart hammered against my ribs as I glanced at the bathroom door. The shower was still running.

I shouldn't look. I should wait until morning and ask him directly.

But what if...

What if he was lying?

---

I waited until well past midnight. Mitchell slept beside me, his breathing deep and even. I'd spent hours staring at the ceiling, replaying dinner, replaying the text preview I'd glimpsed.

Finally, I slipped from beneath the covers. The hardwood floor was cool against my bare feet as I padded to his side of the bed. His phone lay on the nightstand where he'd left it.

With trembling fingers, I picked it up. The screen unlocked immediately—he hadn't changed his passcode since Emma's birthday.

The messages were right there, impossible to ignore.

"Brooklyn Jordan" had sent dozens of texts over the past few months. Intimate messages. Photos. Plans for secret meetings.

I scrolled up, heart sinking with each swipe.

"Can't wait until you leave her," one read.

"I've found that apartment you liked," Mitchell had replied. "One bedroom in your favorite building. It's yours if you want it."

Another exchange caught my eye: "She noticed something's wrong. Keeping up the act is getting harder."

Mitchell's response made my stomach lurch: "Just a little longer. Once the divorce is finalized, we can stop hiding."

Divorce. He was planning to leave me.

I kept scrolling, finding references to credit card charges I didn't recognize—designer bags, restaurant bills, rent payments for an apartment I'd never seen.

Our joint savings account. The money we'd been setting aside for Emma's college education.

My hands shook so badly I nearly dropped the phone. Seven years of marriage. Seven years of sacrifice and love and trust—all of it a lie.

And there, in black and white, was the proof.
