UNDERCOVER VOWS WITH THE SECRET DON Chapter 1

The server room at Helix Technologies had a certain vibe: electric ozone, expensive climate control, and the faint hum of Vespera Vance's looming disaster.

Vesper sat cross-legged on the anti-static floor, clacking away on a matte-black mechanical keyboard she'd custom-wired to the mainframe terminal. Anyone passing by would just see another nameless, ghost-shift data clerk. She wore an aggressively beige thrift-store sweater so oversized it threatened to swallow her whole, thick-rimmed glasses constantly sliding down her nose, and her hair jammed into a wild nest, barely contained by a battered plastic pen.

But behind those off-brand glasses, her eyes never left the waterfall of terminal code. She wasn't entering inventory. She was hacking into her own family's offshore slush funds.

"Come on, you greedy corpses," she muttered, tongue caught between her teeth, "five minutes and your dirty vacation money's headed for a trust in Denmark."

Her uncles had spent half a year tracing her, desperate to drag her into a marriage with a 'dynamic' ninety-year-old steel tycoon. To outrun them, Vesper forged credentials, rebranded herself as "Vesper Vance," and snagged a minimum-wage graveyard shift at Helix Tech a random mid-tier software firm the Vance dynasty wouldn't bother noticing. Perfect camouflage.

A sharp electronic beep rattled the air. Progress bar: 100%.

"Boom." She punched a little fist unto the sky. "Tech-gremlin wins again."

Suddenly, a metallic thud rang out from just outside the server room.

Vesper froze, fist still raised. The late-night shift was supposed to be a ghost town. At 3:00 AM, her only company was herself, a couple cleaning bots, and the new night security guard.

Another crack, louder this time. That was someone meeting drywall. Hard.

Ice slid through her veins. Maybe her uncles found her. Maybe they'd sent those corporate 'extraction specialists' people whispered about-kidnappers with business cards.

"Think, just think," she breathed, yanking her flash drive from the terminal. No way was she using the front door. Eyes wide, she zeroed in on a narrow janitorial closet in the corner. She scuttled across the tiles and dove inside, yanking the wooden door shut as the server room's heavy security door hissed open.

Heart hammering, she pressed her face against the wooden slats.

Three men stepped in. Two wore matching, anonymous tactical black ballistic masks, silenced pistols. Vesper's gut sank. Not her uncle's private eyes. These guys looked like real corporate saboteurs.

The third man? Walking backwards, sidestepping the others' swings.

The new night guard.

Vesper squinted and nudged her glasses up. His badge said "Zander," but nothing about him looked like minimum-wage security. He stood at least six-three, broad-shouldered, his cheap uniform stretched over muscle that screamed "danger." His hair was mussed. Even in the green server glow, his jawline looked straight out of Greek myth.

"Listen, fellas," Zander said his voice smooth, low, totally unfazed by two guns pointed at his face. "Breakroom microwave's off limits after midnight. But I'll let it slide... if you put the toys away."

Vesper stared. Zander still had a half-eaten turkey sandwich in hand, wrapped in tinfoil.

"Shut up and step back, guard," hissed the first masked man. "We want the drive. Don't die for cheap pay."

"Fourteen-fifty, actually," Zander corrected. He took a bite of sandwich, chewed, and sighed. "Honestly? The mustard's all wrong. You're doing me a favor by interrupting."

The assassin tightened his grip. Too late. Zander moved.

It was barely human one second he stood still, the next his sandwich whipped into the first gunman's face. Tinfoil exploded, blinding him just long enough. Zander closed the gap, twisted the gunman's wrist until it cracked, yanked the gun free, and slammed an elbow into the guy's jaw. Down he went, limp.

"Holy tech-support," Vesper whispered, jaw slack in the darkness.

The second thug spun, nerves shot. Zander didn't blink. He ducked, grabbed the man by his vest, and tossed him. The guy crashed into a server rack, sparks flying, and slumped over done.

Zander straightened, unfazed, adjusting his cheap collar. He looked down at the destroyed sandwich and clicked his tongue. "Waste of turkey."

Vesper's brain was a pinball machine. Run! Hide! Wait this guy could flatten her uncles' goons. And he probably needed cash, judging by that uniform. He'd make the perfect fake husband. Bodyguard. Co-conspirator. Her wildest, most desperate idea yet.

She grabbed a heavy plastic janitor's broom, ready for her big hero entrance.

"Don't worry, brave security guard! I'll save you!" she yelled, shoving the door open with as much dramatic flourish as her nerves allowed.

She charged in, broom raised high. Unfortunately, she'd forgotten two things: her giant floppy thrift shoes and the puddle of mayo from Zander's defeated sandwich.

Her right foot hit the slick floor and shot forward.

"Whoa whoa WHOA!" Flailing, she lost her grip on the broom. It sailed across the room and smacked a trashcan.

Zander spun just in time to catch a blur of sweater, wild hair, and crooked glasses barreling toward him.

"Wait, don't " he started. Too late.

Vesper crash-landed right on his chest like running full speed into a granite monument. Stars burst in her vision as her forehead slammed his collarbone.

Her momentum knocked them both over. Zander stumbled over one unconscious saboteur and they both went down hard.

Vesper ended up sprawled across his chest, face buried in his neck. He smelled rich, somehow, like cedarwood, clean laundry, and gunpowder. Her glasses sat sideways on her forehead.

For a moment, nothing moved but the pulsing green server lights.

Zander exhaled under her, steady as ever. She peeled herself up, trying to shove her glasses back into place, and found herself inches from his eyes impossibly clear, a sharp silver-gray, full of some wicked amusement.

"Are you done yet?" Zander asked, voice dark and velvet-smooth. "Or were you about to finish me off with an elbow drop?"

"I was... trying to execute a tactical intervention," Vesper stuttered. Her face lit up with a full-blown blush. She tried to scramble off him, but her sweater snagged on a tactical vest. She ended up plastered right back against his chest.

Zander half-sighed, half-laughed, that wolfish smirk barely visible. He wrapped one big, careful hand around her waist and with zero effort rolled them over, pinning her under him.

The room's energy shifted on a dime. The playful look in his eyes vanished, replaced by sharp, dangerous focus. He leaned in, trapping her with his arms.

"Let's try this again, sweetheart," Zander murmured, tone so quietly commanding it stole the air from her lungs. "Who are you, why're you hiding in a server room at 3 AM, and who sent you to spy on me?"

Vesper swallowed, glancing down at his big, steady hands. Fear should have been her response. Instead, something wilder bubbled up. She steadied her voice, fixed her crooked glasses, and let her own chaos reign.

"Nobody sent me." She forced the sunniest, most innocent grin. "But since you're clearly broke and I desperately need a... let's call it 'heavily armed associate' ever considered a legal marriage contract?"

Zander froze, danger wiped from his face, replaced by sheer disbelief. "...What?"
