Twisted Vows of the Forgotten Chapter 1

The weight of the picture frame in my hand felt like an anchor, dragging me deeper into the past. I stared down at the photo that now lay face-down on the floor, the image of Elena’s smug, artificial smile mocking me from beneath the frame.

My fingers curled into a fist around the edges of it, and I could almost feel her presence in the room, as if she were there, watching me.

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. This was it. I had come for a reason, a singular purpose that had consumed me for years.

The years of silence, of distance, had done nothing but fan the flames of my anger, and tonight, the spark was going to set everything ablaze.

The boy—her son—was still peacefully asleep, oblivious to the storm brewing just steps away.

How could she be this cold? How could she have ruined everything? Elena had taken so much from me, and now it was my turn. She wouldn’t get away with this. She couldn’t.

I dropped the picture frame back onto the table with a sharp snap. It felt like a declaration. The past wasn’t done with us yet.

I turned, my boots clicking against the polished floors as I headed toward the door. My steps were measured, deliberate. I didn’t belong here, not in this place of wealth and cruelty.

I had always been a shadow in Elena’s life—a mere side character in her grand narrative. But tonight, I was rewriting that story.

I paused at the door. The housekeeper was still standing outside the room, her gaze as cool as ever. She didn’t speak, but I knew she was watching me, judging me. But I didn’t care.

“You’ll find me when they’re ready,” I said, my voice cold. There was nothing more to say to the woman who had ushered me in like an unwanted guest. I didn’t need her approval. Elena was the only one who mattered now.

I left the nursery, walking back through the hallway, my mind racing.

What had happened to the girl I used to know? The girl who had promised to always have my back? What twisted version of herself had she become to abandon me so completely, so ruthlessly?

As I walked, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched. The air seemed to thicken, each step feeling heavier than the last.

It wasn’t the housekeeper—it was the house itself, as if the mansion had a life of its own, waiting for something. Maybe it had been waiting for me all along.

I turned a corner, and there she was. Elena. Standing at the top of a grand staircase, her presence commanded the room even before she spoke.

The years had not been kind to her. She looked older, thinner, her beauty now tempered by the arrogance that clung to her like a second skin.

“Claire,” she said, her voice smooth, controlled. “I didn’t expect you so soon.”

The words cut through the silence, sharp and calculated. I wanted to hate her more in that moment than ever before, but something else simmered beneath the anger—dread.

A lingering feeling that I was about to uncover something even darker than I had anticipated.

“I’m sure you didn’t,” I replied, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. I forced my gaze to remain on her, refusing to let her see the storm of emotions swirling in me.

“I’m surprised you even showed up,” she continued, descending the stairs slowly, her heels clicking against the marble. “After everything that happened.”

“Don’t act like you don’t know why I’m here,” I shot back, my tone icy.

Elena stopped halfway down the stairs, a small, almost pitying smile playing on her lips. “You’ve always been dramatic, Claire. I’m sure you’ve had your reasons. But this—this is beneath you. You’re better than this.”

Better than this? My mind flashed back to the years we had spent together, the way she had abandoned me without so much as a second thought.

How could she stand there, acting as if none of it mattered? As if everything she had done to me was just some game?

“You ruined me,” I said, my voice shaking with the force of my words. “You stole everything I had.”

Elena’s eyes flickered, but her smile never wavered. “It wasn’t personal, Claire. You’re just a casualty of something bigger. Something you’ll never understand.”

I felt the anger surge within me, threatening to spill over. “I understand just fine. You choose your path. And now I’m going to make you regret it.”

She tilted her head, studying me as if she were trying to figure out what had changed in me. “You think you can just walk in here and take everything from me?” she asked, her voice sharp, a dangerous edge creeping in.

“I’m not taking anything,” I replied, stepping closer. “I’m giving you what you deserve.”

Her expression hardened. The air between us seemed to crackle with tension, like the calm before a storm.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with,” she warned, her voice low. “You think you can just show up and make everything right? You can’t undo what’s been done, Claire.”

“I don’t need to undo anything,” I said, my lips curling into a bitter smile. “I just need you to face what you’ve done.”

For a moment, there was silence. A long, suffocating silence that seemed to stretch for an eternity.

Without warning, Elena’s smile faded. “You think this is about you, don’t you?” she asked, her voice suddenly filled with something darker, more dangerous. “You think you’re the victim in all of this.”

“I was,” I snapped, my pulse racing. “You took everything from me.”

She stared at me, her eyes narrowing. “You don’t even know the half of it.”

Her words sent a chill down my spine. There was something else, something she wasn’t telling me. Something that had been hidden all these years. And in that moment, I knew—this wasn’t just about revenge anymore.

This was about uncovering the truth, the truth that had been buried beneath lies and betrayal for far too long.

“What aren’t you telling me?” I demanded, my voice trembling with the weight of the question.

Elena stepped back, her expression unreadable. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

I wasn’t so sure about that. I had believed everything she told me before. But now, nothing made sense. And it wasn’t until that moment, standing in front of her, that I realized just how much I had underestimated the depth of the deception.

Elena hadn’t just ruined my life. She had been playing a far more dangerous game all along.

And I was about to find out exactly how deep that game went.
