Too Late for My Husband’s Regret Chapter 1

Isabella's POV

“I’ll take the marriage.”

The words did not echo in the boardroom. They didn’t need to. They landed with the soft finality of a verdict, the kind no one argues with because the sentence has already been carried out.

My father’s pen froze above the contract. The only sound was the quiet ticking of the glass wall clock behind him, each second marking the death of the deal we were all pretending hadn’t already collapsed.

Serena’s breath hitched beside me. It wasn’t loud. Serena never let her reactions be loud. Her strength lay in control — in the polished beauty that made her seem gentle while every movement was calculated.

“You?” my father said at last, voice stripped of warmth. “Isabella, stop this nonsense.”

“I’m not joking.”

“You’re emotional.”

“No,” I replied. “I’m being practical.”

The conference table stretched between us like a battlefield — contracts, legal pads, untouched coffee cups growing cold. The Grantstone merger had been frozen for six months, ever since Julian Grant had collapsed during a closed-door board meeting in Zurich. No warning. No diagnosis the doctors could agree on. Just silence where the heir to one of the country’s largest biomedical conglomerates had once been.

Alive, but not awake.

A son in a bed and a billion-dollar empire with no legal hand to steer it.

The Grant family charter required a married heir before majority voting rights transferred to the next generation. Julian had signed it himself at twenty-five, back when he still strode into rooms like he owned the oxygen.

A clause meant to preserve stability.

Now it was strangling it.

Serena had been selected as his bride two years ago. She was perfect on paper — younger daughter of a respected industrialist, well-educated, photogenic, emotionally pliable. The kind of woman investors trusted to look sincere in public while letting other people make the real decisions.

Until reality arrived.

“I can’t marry someone who doesn’t even know I exist,” Serena had said earlier, tears clinging delicately to her lashes as she leaned into my stepmother’s shoulder. “What if he never wakes up? I’ll be trapped in a marriage with a ghost.”

My father hadn’t argued. He didn’t need to. The room had slowly, inexorably turned toward me.

Because there was always a second daughter.

There was always a contingency.

Now he was looking at me again with the same cold assessment he used when deciding which branch of a business to amputate to save the rest.

“You understand what you’re offering,” he said slowly. “This will not be a real marriage.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You will not be loved.”

“That isn’t a requirement.”

“You will not be consulted.”

“I’m used to that.”

“He may never recover,” he pressed.

I met his gaze. “Then nothing changes.”

Serena stared at me like I’d lost my mind.

“Isabella,” she whispered, “you don’t have to—”

“Yes, I do,” I interrupted gently. “Because you won’t.”

My stepmother’s mouth tightened.

This was not about generosity. It never had been.

This was about cost.

And in this family, I was always the cheapest thing on the table.

“You’re asking me to believe this is altruism,” my father said. “That’s insulting.”

“It isn’t altruism,” I said. “It’s negotiation.”

That made him sit back.

“You don’t sacrifice yourself without wanting something in return.”

“Exactly.”

The words hung between us. I let the silence work for me, watching as irritation slid into interest behind his eyes.

“What are your terms?” he asked.

“I want Grantstone BioLabs,” I said. “Full voting control.”

Serena inhaled sharply.

“That division is dormant,” my father snapped. “It hemorrhaged money. We shut it down because it was unsalvageable.”

“You shut it down because it wasn’t profitable fast enough,” I replied. “Not because it wasn’t valuable.”

“You don’t even know what you’d be inheriting.”

“I’ve already studied the patents.”

The room froze.

My father stared at me. Really stared this time, as though trying to identify the version of his daughter who had quietly acquired that kind of knowledge.

“You want a dead company in exchange for your future?” he said.

“I want autonomy.”

“That division is a liability.”

“Then you’ll be relieved to be rid of it.”

His jaw worked.

Serena whispered, “Dad—”

He raised a hand.

“How quickly do you want it transferred?” he asked me.

“Before the engagement is announced.”

Silence followed.

Then he nodded once.

“Done.”

I stood.

“As soon as the paperwork is finalized, I’ll meet Julian.”

---

The city outside the tower was slick with rain, neon bleeding into puddles like bruised light.

Ethan was waiting by the car, umbrella already in hand, posture immaculate as ever.

“Long meeting?” he asked.

“It’s settled.”

He opened the door without another word. The interior smelled faintly of leather and clean citrus — the scent of order.

I watched the city slide past the tinted windows.

“You didn’t ask,” I said.

“About what?”

“Why I agreed.”

He paused. “You don’t owe me an explanation.”

I smiled faintly. “That’s new.”

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

“I just assumed you had your reasons,” he said.

“I do.”

He waited.

I didn’t elaborate.

Traffic slowed at a red light. For a moment, his reflection overlapped mine in the glass — two people occupying the same space without truly sharing it.

“You’re walking into something unstable,” he said at last. “The Grant family doesn’t relinquish control easily.”

“I’m not asking them to relinquish it.”

“You’re asking them to trust you.”

I laughed softly. “No. I’m asking them to underestimate me.”

He didn’t respond.

But something had changed.

I could feel it.

---

The Grant estate sat beyond the city like a monument to privacy — glass, steel, silence. Private ICU wing. Private helipad. Private grief sealed behind biometric locks.

Clara Grant greeted me in a cream suit that looked like it had never known a wrinkle.

“You came quickly,” she said.

“Julian is my responsibility now,” I replied.

She studied me for a long second before opening the door to the ICU room.

Julian Grant lay motionless beneath soft lighting, machines whispering in rhythms that felt too calm to belong to a human being. His face was pale, beautiful, untouched by effort. If I hadn’t known better, I might have believed he was sleeping.

“This is not a romance,” Clara said quietly.

“I know.”

“It’s not even a marriage in the traditional sense.”

“I understand.”

She turned to face me. “Then what are you hoping for?”

I met her gaze. “Control.”

Something in her eyes flickered.

---

That night, back in my childhood bedroom — the one that had never quite been mine — I lay awake staring at the ceiling, listening to rain against the window.

My phone buzzed once.

Ethan: You’re awake, aren’t you?

I stared at the screen.

I know this isn’t easy, the next message appeared. But be careful. People who negotiate their own worth tend to get resented for it.

I typed, erased, typed again.

Since when do you worry about that?

The typing bubble appeared. Disappeared.

Then: Since now.

I set the phone face down on the nightstand.

I was marrying a man who could not speak, could not lie, could not betray me.

It should have been the safest decision of my life.

I had no idea yet that the real danger wasn’t lying unconscious behind hospital glass.

It was already sitting quietly behind the wheel — calculating how much damage I might do.
