They Bullied My Son Without Knowing I Was the Luna Chapter 1

I hid my five-year-old son in a human kindergarten because our enemies were hunting the Cruel Alpha’s heir.

Every afternoon, Toby ran into my arms grinning and told me human children had the strangest games.

Today he came out in one shoe and said the other children had hidden the pair for a treasure hunt.

His lunchbox was empty because “sharing” meant Hudson could eat all of it.

The red stickers on his shirt, he thought, were prizes.

They were behavior warnings.

Then I watched a donor’s wife grab my son by the arm and throw him onto the pavement after he hit her boy for calling me a dirty, jobless nobody.

Toby scrambled up before I could speak.

“Don’t be mad, Mommy. I think human moms say hello like that.”

Under the bench, his scent-seal bracelet lay snapped in two.

The teacher told me the cameras had not worked all week.

Toby blinked. “But Miss Lacey watched when they put my food in the trash.”

I stopped smiling and ordered the school to preserve every second of footage before midnight.

At the gate, I caught the scent of a wolf who did not belong there.

"Human school is fun, Mommy!" Toby yelled, waving both arms as he raced toward me through the pickup crowd.

He grinned wide enough to show the gap where his front tooth had fallen out. My smile vanished when I saw his feet.

He wore only one sneaker. His other foot was covered by a white sock soaked gray with dirty puddle water, and the cuff of his jeans clung wetly to his ankle.

"Hudson and his friends hid my shoe again," he announced, completely unfazed by the cold. "Human kids really love treasure hunts. I am getting very good at them. Today I found it before snack."

Again.

I crouched on the concrete outside Arbor Crest Academy and rolled his pant leg away from his skin. No cuts. No swelling. Then I noticed the stickers.

Three fresh red circles had been added to the six already lined across the side of his shirt.

Toby puffed out his chest. "I got more red stars today. I have nine now. If I get ten, maybe there is a prize."

A little girl in a pink rain jacket slowed beside us. She looked toward the teachers, then leaned close enough to whisper.

"Those aren't stars. They're bad-behavior stickers."

She hurried toward the parking lot before I could ask her anything else.

Toby stared down at his shirt. His shoulders dipped for half a second. Then he looked up at me with the solemn expression he used when learning a new Pack rule.

"Maybe red means good where wolves live and bad here," he decided. "Humans have lots of rules."

Something hot moved under my ribs.

Three months ago, Dorian and I had found Red Hollow tracking marks outside the Blackridge Pack nursery. Until we knew which scout had crossed our border, we had taken Toby out of the Pack academy, changed his school records to Toby Gray, and sealed his scent with a braided moonstone cord. Arbor Crest was supposed to give him one ordinary semester among humans while our guards hunted the people looking for the Blackridge heir.

I had worried he would struggle to hide his strength.

I had never considered that he might mistake cruelty for friendship.

I stood to find his teacher.

Before I reached the gate, a boy with slicked-back blond hair stepped in front of Toby and yanked the stuffed gray wolf from his open backpack.

Hudson Hart held the toy over his head. "It smells like wet dog. My mom says your mom can't even afford real perfume."

Toby only wrinkled his nose.

Hudson looked disappointed by the lack of reaction. "She probably doesn't work because nobody wants her."

He tossed the stuffed wolf into the dirt and kicked it beneath a bench.

Toby moved.

One second he stood beside me. The next, Hudson was flat on the grass with Toby pinning his shoulders in a clean Pack pup-training hold. Toby kept his claws retracted and his knees carefully positioned away from the other boy's ribs.

My chest tightened.

He had understood every insult.

He simply had not cared until Hudson insulted me.

"Get off him!"

A woman in a beige trench coat rushed across the lawn. Bianca Hart grabbed Toby by the upper arm and ripped him away from her son.

Then she shoved him.

I lunged and caught Toby against my chest before the back of his head hit the pavement. Pain shot through my shoulder from the impact.

Toby immediately patted my cheek. "I'm okay, Mommy. I landed on you."

Bianca did not even look at him.

"You clearly have no idea how to raise a child," she snapped. "You don't work, you live outside the city, and you send him here dressed like a charity case. No wonder he acts like a feral animal."

A growl climbed my throat. I swallowed it.

Lacey Morgan, Toby's kindergarten teacher, finally hurried over with a clipboard pressed to her chest. She checked Hudson first. She never asked why Toby's sock was soaked or why his toy lay in the dirt.

"Toby needs to apologize," she said. "He showed aggressive behavior again today."

Toby gave a serious nod. "I can say sorry for wrestling. I forgot humans are softer."

A father near the gate coughed into his fist, badly hiding a laugh.

Bianca's face went scarlet.

I did not laugh. My attention had dropped to Toby's bare wrist.

The braided cord was gone.

"Where is your bracelet?"

Toby pointed beneath the wooden bench. "Hudson said it was a cheap dog bracelet. He borrowed it to play and stepped on it. But sharing means I shouldn't ask for things back too fast, right? Miss Lacey says sharing makes friends."

I crossed the lawn and crouched beside the bench.

The moonstone scent seal lay in two pieces in the mud.

Panic hit hard enough to sharpen every sound around me. Toby's natural scent was already pushing through the broken seal: rain, cedar, and the unmistakable dominance of a high-ranking Alpha's child. To a human, it was nothing. To a wolf tracker, it was a flare in the dark.

I pushed my own aura outward just enough to blur his scent beneath mine, then pulled Toby behind my legs.

"Lacey, preserve every camera feed from this week. Classroom, cafeteria, hallways, playground, pickup. All of it."

Her grip tightened on the clipboard. "The camera system has been malfunctioning. There may not be footage to pull."

Toby peeked around my hip. "But you watched the camera yesterday when Hudson put my sandwich in the trash. You told me not to make a fuss because his mom donates things."

Lacey went still.

Bianca stepped in front of her. "Children lie when they get caught."

I took out my phone.

I emailed Principal Elaine Patrice, the school board's general address, and the campus records officer. I listed the exact time of the shove, Toby's damaged property, his missing shoe, his statement about the lunch incident, and Lacey's claim that the cameras had failed. Then I added one sentence requesting an immediate litigation hold on all surveillance and access logs.

I hit send.

"I have formally requested preservation," I said. "Do not delete anything. I will see both of you at the disciplinary meeting tomorrow morning."

I took Toby's hand and walked toward the iron gate.

We had made it three steps onto the sidewalk when the wind changed.

Cold iron. Pine resin. Male wolf.

Not Blackridge.

I stopped so abruptly Toby bumped into my leg.

"Mommy?"

I scanned the parked cars, the school windows, the parents moving beneath bright umbrellas.

The scent was strongest at the painted yellow curb.

Exactly where Toby stood alone every afternoon waiting for me.
