They Broke My Wedding To Steal My Fortune Chapter 1

"Where the hell are they?"

I gripped my phone, pressing it hard against my ear as the mechanical ring tone buzzed for the ninth time.

Nothing. Just the flat, automated hum of voicemail.

"Marta, pick up. The ceremony starts in forty minutes. Where is the glam team?"

I hung up, tossing the device onto the vanity table. My hands shook slightly, but I forced my fingers flat against the marble. Five years. John and I had stayed in the shadows for five full years, dodging tabloids and protecting his family's corporate image while he built his empire. Today was supposed to be the day he finally put his ring on my finger in front of every camera in New York.

I turned toward the garment bag hanging from the wardrobe door.

A sharp, sick feeling hit my stomach before I even unzipped it.

The heavy silk was already spilling through the seam, shredded into ribbons.

"No. No, no, no."

I grabbed the zipper and pulled it down in one violent jerk.

The custom gown—worth six figures, hand-stitched with micro-pearls—was massacred. Long, brutal blade cuts ran through the corset, ripping the boning apart. The delicate tulle hung in ragged, dangling scraps, while the pearl embellishments rolled across the hardwood floor like dropped teeth.

"What happened to this?" I whispered to the empty penthouse suite.

My phone chimed with a notification. It was the private car service.

*Driver assigned.*

Then, two seconds later:

*Ride canceled by dispatcher.*

I dialed the chauffeur's direct line instantly. It clicked through.

"Where are you? I'm waiting in the lobby courtyard."

"Miss Vance? I got orders from the central garage ten minutes ago to stand down. They said your transport was rescheduled."

"I didn't reschedule anything! Who authorized that?"

"The office manager," the driver said, his tone stiff and rushed. "Look, ma'am, I took another fare already. I'm three miles out on the West Side Highway."

"Turn around. I'll pay you triple."

"Can't do it. Company policy."

The line went dead.

I checked the wall clock. Thirty minutes until the processional music started. Two hundred high-profile guests, half of Manhattan's financial elite, and dozens of media outlets were already filling the cathedral pews on Fifth Avenue. If I didn't show up, the press would tear John apart. They would say his secret bride got cold feet, or worse, that he was jilted at his own billion-dollar spectacle.

I couldn't let John face that humiliation alone.

I ripped my eyes away from the shredded dress. There was no time to cry, no time to find another gown, no time to track down who held the knife.

I looked down at myself. Faded denim jeans, a simple cream crewneck knit sweater, and white sneakers. My hair was pulled back in a messy, uneven claw clip, strands slipping loose around my ears. Zero foundation, zero lipstick.

"Fine," I muttered, snatching my purse and apartment keycard. "Then this is how I show up."

I sprinted down the fire stairs, flagged a yellow cab on the curb by jumping directly into the street, and slammed the door shut.

"Fifth Avenue and Fiftieth," I told the driver, breathless. "Run every yellow light you see."

The twenty-minute ride felt like an execution countdown. When the taxi skidded to the curb outside St. Bartholomew’s, the flashbulbs were already popping against the church steps. Photographers swarmed the barricades, aiming their lenses at the arriving limousines.

I ducked my head, pushed past the bewildered security guard at the side entrance, and slipped into the antechamber.

The massive oak doors leading into the main sanctuary were closed. Beyond them, the murmur of hundreds of voices vibrated through the heavy wood.

I reached out and shoved both heavy doors open at once.

The creak of the hinges sliced clean through the room.

Instantly, the grand organ stopped mid-chord.

The silence that followed was thick and suffocating.

Every single head turned. Two hundred faces—clad in black tuxedos, bespoke evening gowns, and glittering diamonds—stared directly at me. Flashbulbs went off in blinding bursts near the press section at the rear.

I stood in the doorway in my scuffed sneakers, worn-out denim, and uncombed hair, framed by towering floral arrangements of white gardenias.

Down at the altar, John stood tall in his tailored Tom Ford tuxedo. His posture was immaculate, his broad shoulders squared. But as his dark eyes locked onto me, his jaw hardened into stone. An unmistakable flash of deep displeasure crossed his features, followed by a tight, rigid twitch at the corner of his mouth.

I didn't cower. I lifted my chin and walked forward.

My rubber soles squeaked against the polished marble aisle, loud and jarring in the hush.

"Is that her?" a woman on the left whispered, leaning toward her husband. "Is she insane?"

"Look at her clothes... did she just roll out of bed?"

"What kind of stunt is this? John's family must be furious."

The whispers hissed like grease on a hot skillet.

Before I could reach the front steps where John waited, a figure stepped out from the first row, cutting off my path.

Marcus, John's father, blocked the aisle. His hair was slicked back, silver and pristine, and his gaze pinned me with sheer contempt. He didn't bother keeping his voice down.

"What is the meaning of this circus?" Marcus demanded, his tone cold enough to frost glass. "You dare show up to our family's wedding dressed like a vagrant?"

"Marcus, let me pass," I said steadily, keeping my eyes leveled on his. "I need to speak to John."

"You won't take another step." Marcus sneered, scanning my sweater with open disgust. "Look at you. Look at the cameras behind you! You have completely humiliated my son, and you've made a mockery of our entire family name before the ceremony even started."

John took two strides down the altar steps, stopping just behind his father. His face remained carefully blank for the photographers, but his voice was dropped, sharp as a switchblade.

"Elowen," John said, each syllable strained. "Explain this. Right now."

I inhaled deeply, letting the air steady my racing pulse. I refused to let my voice tremble.

"Someone set me up," I announced, projecting my voice so it rang clearly over the murmurs of the front rows. "My glam team vanished. My driver was cancelled from the central garage. And my gown—the one kept locked in the suite—was sliced to shreds thirty minutes ago. Every single arrangement was sabotaged."

Marcus let out a dry, dismissive bark of laughter. "A sabotage? You expect anyone in this room to believe a cheap excuse like that?"

"I don't care what you believe, Marcus," I countered, stepping closer so I could look directly into my fiancé's guarded eyes. "I care about what John believes."

John stared down at me, his gaze unreadable, until his hand reached out and gripped my wrist.
