The Woman Who Erased Her Marriage Chapter 1

For twenty-five years, I devoted myself to my husband and my son. I was the wife of a syndicate don—present in every room that mattered, invisible in every decision that didn’t include me.

On our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, I allowed myself a simple request.

The Devereux estate was quiet, but never truly peaceful. Guards rotated outside the gates, encrypted calls rang through hidden offices, and every conversation in the house carried the weight of business that never stopped.

I stood beside the long dining table while Viktor Devereux sat at the head of it, reviewing reports from his men. Even after decades, he still commanded attention without trying—expensive suit, calm authority, the kind of man people obeyed before they even realized they were doing it.

“Viktor,” I said carefully. “Do you remember what you promised me when we got married?”

He didn’t look up. “What is it now, Vivienne?”

That tone alone already told me I was interrupting something important.

“I know things have always been about the business,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “But for our anniversary… I thought maybe we could leave for a few days. Just the two of us. The southern coast estate is secure. It wouldn’t interfere with anything.”

That finally made him look at me.

Not warmly.

Like I had misjudged my place.

“Leave?” he repeated. “For what exactly?”

My fingers tightened slightly at my sides. “Just time together. We never really had that after the marriage. Everything was work, alliances, rebuilding the organization—”

“And you think that changes now?” he cut in.

The room went quieter without anyone speaking.

He leaned back in his chair, expression controlled but cold. “Vivienne, I don’t have the luxury of stepping away whenever I feel sentimental. There are negotiations with the Moreno family, pressure from the east territories, and internal disputes that still need stabilizing.”

“I’m not asking for luxury,” I said softly. “Just a few days.”

A short laugh escaped him, humorless.

“You’ve lived in comfort for twenty-five years under this name,” he said. “Security, wealth, status. And now you want to talk about taking breaks like we’re ordinary people?”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“I raised our son,” I replied.

“With staff, tutors, and protection arranged by this family,” he said flatly, already turning back to the documents. “Let’s not pretend you carried the same burden I did.”

Silence stretched.

“I just wanted something for myself,” I said quietly.

That earned me another glance—this time sharper.

“If you want something to admire,” he said, “look at Seraphina.”

My chest tightened.

Seraphina. My cousin. The one who had slowly started appearing beside him in meetings, dinners, decisions—like she belonged there more than I did.

“She understands how this world works,” Viktor continued. “No unnecessary demands. No emotional distractions. She knows her place in an organization like this.”

My throat went dry.

The glass in my hand slipped.

It shattered on the floor.

The sound echoed through the dining hall.

A guard outside shifted immediately. Someone opened a door down the corridor.

“Careless,” came a voice behind us.

My father.

Angelo Devereux stepped in, his presence instantly changing the atmosphere. Former right-hand man of the family turned senior advisor—still feared, still obeyed.

His eyes dropped to the broken glass, then to me.

“At your age,” he said flatly, “you still can’t manage something as simple as holding a cup?”

“I’ll clean it,” I said quickly.

“You always do,” he replied. “Clean up. Stay quiet. That’s your role, isn’t it?”

Viktor didn’t intervene.

He never did when my father spoke like that.

Instead, he said mildly, “Don’t take it personally. We’re just trying to keep things efficient.”

Efficient.

As if I were part of the system, not a person in it.

My father exhaled in irritation. “Seraphina would have been a stronger match for this family. Less sentiment. More discipline.”

That sentence didn’t hurt because it was new.

It hurt because it wasn’t.

I crouched down, gathered the glass with my bare hands. A shard cut into my skin, sharp and immediate.

Blood appeared instantly.

No one moved.

No one looked.

They continued talking over me as if I had already left the room.

And for the first time, I understood exactly where I stood in the Devereux syndicate.

Not beside them.

Not beneath them.

Outside of them.
