Chapter 2

Aaliyah POV

"She ran away."

The words hung in the suffocating, herb-scented air. Charlotte’s usually immaculate posture crumbled as she sank into the velvet chair beside my bed. The rich scent of blooming peonies that always surrounded her had soured, tainted by the sharp, acrid stench of pure panic.

"Elaina left a letter," Charlotte continued, her voice trembling. "She called the sacred Fated Mate bond an 'archaic shackle.' She wrote that she refused to be a breeding mare for the Brewer Pack and went to seek her 'true freedom.'"

I kept my face perfectly blank, though my heart hammered against my ribs. I knew exactly what Elaina was doing. The transmigrated soul occupying my cousin's body thought she was the invincible heroine of a romance novel. Right now, she was likely wandering into the dangerous border territories, playing a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with the incognito Alpha Jaden Livingston.

"Alpha Heir Kendall Brewer is devastated, but his mother..." Charlotte choked on a sob, her manicured fingers digging into her lilac dress. "Luna Antonia Brewer is furious. She sees this as the ultimate insult to their pureblood lineage. She is threatening a Pack war unless we provide a Substitute Mate of equal noble blood to complete the Marking ceremony."

Charlotte slowly lifted her tear-stained face, her bloodshot eyes locking onto mine.

A chill violently swept through my veins. The plot was trying to correct itself.

In the original novel, the Wolfless Aaliyah was the sacrificial lamb offered to the Brewer Pack. I remembered the gruesome details vividly. Kendall’s Inner Wolf, obsessed with the scent of agave and his lost Elaina, violently rejected the Wolfless substitute. He subjected Aaliyah to years of cold abuse and psychological torture.

But that wasn't the worst part. The true nightmare was Alpha Jaden Livingston. When the ruthless male lead eventually launched his bloody crusade to claim Elaina, he disposed of anyone who had ever occupied her rightful place. My phantom fever from last night flared up again—I could almost feel the jagged fangs of Jaden's feral Rogues tearing into my throat, ripping my flesh apart while I screamed in the desolate wilderness.

"Aaliyah, my sweet girl," Charlotte reached out, grasping my cold, clammy hand. Her thumb rubbed my knuckles in a desperate, pleading gesture. "You have Hayes blood running through your veins. If you take Elaina's place, I will transfer fifteen percent of the Hayes Pack's core shares into your name. You will be a Luna. You will have wealth, status, everything a Wolfless girl could ever dream of."

I stared at the woman who had raised me since my mother died. She was willing to send me to a living hell just to buy time for her runaway daughter.

I slowly, deliberately, pulled my hand from her grasp.

"No, Aunt Charlotte."

Charlotte froze, her tears halting instantly. "What did you say?"

"I said no," I replied, my voice quiet but steady. I gripped the edge of the blanket, forcing myself to meet her shocked gaze. "Let’s be rational. Alpha Kendall’s Inner Wolf is already devoted to Elaina. Do you honestly believe a powerful Alpha will accept a Wolfless substitute forced upon him? He will despise me. And when his resentment boils over, he will direct his wrath right back at the Hayes Pack."

Charlotte’s lips parted, but no sound came out.

"Furthermore," I continued, leaning forward slightly, "what happens when Elaina inevitably returns? Do you expect us to tear each other apart over the Luna title? It would be a bloodbath that would make our family the laughingstock of the entire werewolf society."

"You... you are just a Wolfless," Charlotte stammered, her Luna's aura flickering erratically as her mind struggled to process my defiance. "You have no future here. This is your only chance—"

"I am a Hunter," I cut her off, my tone slicing through the heavy air like a silver blade.

The room went dead silent.

"My surname is Hunter," I repeated, watching the color completely drain from Charlotte's face. "My father was a Hunter. And my marriage, Substitute Mate or not, cannot be decided by the Hayes Pack. It requires the explicit consent of my uncle."

I paused, letting the weight of the name settle between us. "Are you prepared to tell Elder Alpha Griffith Hunter that you are using his niece as a sacrificial pawn to cover up your daughter's scandal?"

At the mention of Elder Alpha Griffith, Charlotte’s Inner Wolf let out a visceral, instinctual whimper of terror. Her entire body began to tremble violently, the thick layer of makeup unable to hide the sheer dread consuming her features.

Chapter 3

Aaliyah POV

At the mention of Elder Alpha Griffith, Charlotte’s Inner Wolf let out a visceral, instinctual whimper of terror. Her entire body began to tremble violently, the thick layer of makeup unable to hide the sheer dread consuming her features.

I leaned back against the pillows, my expression perfectly calm, though my heart was racing. It was time to deliver the final blow.

"Actually, my ten-year-old brother, Caiden, is arriving by carriage this evening," I said, keeping my voice smooth and deliberate. "Though he hasn't experienced his first Shift yet, he is fiercely protective of me. Why don't you propose this Substitute Mate idea to him? He can have his Hunter escorts use their Mind-Link to contact my uncle in the capital immediately."

The remaining color drained from Charlotte's face. The thought of Griffith Hunter discovering she intended to use his niece as a sacrificial lamb to cover up her daughter's scandal broke her completely. The wrath of the Hunter Pack would be apocalyptic.

"I... I have other pressing matters to attend to," she stammered. The once-suffocating scent of blooming peonies now reeked of sour panic and pure cowardice. She gathered her lilac skirts and practically fled the room, desperate to maintain the last shred of her Luna's dignity.

Once the heavy oak door clicked shut, the adrenaline left me. I sagged against the bedsheets, a cold sweat breaking out across my skin. I had won this battle, but the war was already marching toward us.

Elaina's flight wasn't just a family scandal; it was the catalyst for a bloodbath.

In the novel, her escape leads her straight into the dangerous borderlands, where she crosses paths with the ruthless Alpha Jaden Livingston. Driven by his feral Inner Wolf and a twisted Fated Mate bond, Jaden would eventually launch a catastrophic war against the Hayes Pack just to claim her.

I shivered, phantom pain echoing in my bones as the gruesome plot details flooded my mind. I knew exactly how this tragedy ended. Elder Luna Evelyn would die on the front lines defending the pups. Charlotte would be thrown into a dungeon until she went mad and took her own life. The golden Alpha Heir Greyson would have his legs shattered, his Inner Wolf permanently crippled. And Alpha Bradford would be forced to surrender his power before committing suicide in despair.

And me? As a Wolfless girl trapped in the crossfire, I would be tossed to Jaden's feral Rogues, torn to shreds while Elaina lived happily ever after with her blood-soaked Alpha.

I couldn't stay here. I had to find a way back to the Hunter Pack, or better yet, find a protector so terrifyingly powerful—a Lycan, perhaps—that even Jaden wouldn't dare cross them.

Pushing through the lingering weakness, I dragged myself out of bed and moved into my private sitting room. The heavy velvet drapes blocked the midday sun, casting long shadows across the carved oak table.

Before I could settle onto the sofa, the door swung open.

My bodyguard and maid, Omega Kaela, marched in. She carried a steaming porcelain bowl of the Healer's dark brew, her fresh lemongrass scent cutting through the room's staleness. The bitter concoction was meant to mask my natural White Jasmine scent, but it smelled like boiled dirt.

I turned my head away in disgust. "Take it away, Kaela. I'm not drinking sludge today."

Instead of cowering or submitting like a typical lower-ranking Omega, Kaela planted her hands on her hips. Her round, doll-like face scrunched into a fierce scowl, her lively Inner Wolf practically bristling with indignation.

"If you don't drink every last drop right now, my lady," Kaela threatened, her tone a mix of genuine concern and feisty defiance, "I am running straight to The Dowager's Estate. I will tell Elder Luna Evelyn, and she will come here to spoon-feed it to you herself!"

I blinked, surprised by the blatant insubordination, and then a genuine smile touched my lips. In this brutal world of Alphas, bloodlines, and impending slaughter, this fierce little Omega's warmth was the most grounding thing I had felt all day.

Kaela's threat also sparked a sudden realization. Charlotte was desperate, and desperate wolves did unpredictable things. I needed an immediate, impenetrable shield.

"Fine," I conceded, taking the bitter bowl from her hands and downing it in one miserable gulp. I wiped my mouth, ignoring the awful taste. "Help me get dressed, Kaela. We are going to see my grandmother."

Chapter 4

Aaliyah POV

The walk to the Dowager's Estate was short, but in my fever-weakened state, it felt like miles. By the time Kaela helped me through the heavy oak doors of my grandmother’s residence, my legs were genuinely trembling.

Instantly, the rich, grounding scent of aged sandalwood enveloped me, washing away the lingering stench of Charlotte’s panic.

"Aaliyah!" Elder Luna Evelyn Hayes rushed across the grand hall, her usually stern face softening into absolute horror. "By the Goddess, you look like a ghost."

She wrapped her arms around me, her warmth seeping into my chilled bones. I leaned into her embrace, letting out a soft, pathetic sigh. I didn't have to fake the exhaustion, but I certainly played up the vulnerability. "I'm sorry to intrude, Grandmother. I just... I didn't feel safe in my own room."

A low, dangerous rumble vibrated in Evelyn’s chest. Her Inner Wolf—an old, battle-scarred dire wolf—bristled at the implication that her favorite grandchild was being threatened. She immediately ordered her servants to fetch a senior Healer and guided me to a plush velvet armchair.

Before the Healer could even arrive, the heavy oak doors burst open again.

Luna Charlotte marched in. The once-elegant scent of blooming peonies rolling off her was now entirely soured by desperation. She froze when she saw me tucked safely under Evelyn’s arm, her jaw tightening, but she had no other choice. She was a cornered animal.

"Mother," Charlotte began, her voice tight as she bowed her head. "I apologize for the intrusion, but the survival of the Hayes Pack is at stake. Elaina has... made a grave error."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, her fingers gently stroking my hair. "I am aware of your daughter's scandalous flight, Charlotte. What I want to know is why my Wolfless granddaughter feels unsafe in your care."

Charlotte swallowed hard, her hands twisting the fabric of her lilac dress. "The Brewer Pack is demanding blood. Alpha Heir Kendall is devastated. If we do not provide a Substitute Mate of equal noble standing, they will declare war. Aaliyah has Hunter blood. She is the only one who can appease them and save our Pack from slaughter."

I sat perfectly still, watching the trap Charlotte had just built for herself snap shut.

Silence stretched across the hall, thick and suffocating. Then, Evelyn slammed her hand against the carved oak armrest.

*Boom.*

The Dowager’s aura exploded into the room. It wasn't like Charlotte's frantic, oppressive weight; this was the crushing, undeniable dominance of an Elder who had survived decades of Pack wars. The sandalwood scent turned sharp as a blade.

Charlotte gasped, her knees buckling instantly as her Inner Wolf whimpered in pure terror. She hit the floor, bowing her head in forced submission.

"You dare?" Evelyn snarled, rising to her feet. "You let your foolish daughter run wild, and your solution is to sacrifice Corrine's only child to clean up your mess? Aaliyah is a Hunter! You have no right to offer her to anyone, let alone as a discarded consolation prize!"

"Mother, please!" Charlotte cried out, tears ruining her pristine makeup. "Luna Antonia Brewer is arriving in two days! She is bringing her guards to personally inspect our estate for a substitute. If we don't have a pureblood girl ready, she will tear our territory apart!"

Evelyn’s face darkened. The sheer humiliation of having another Luna march into her territory to inspect her family like livestock was a bitter pill to swallow. But she was a pragmatist. She knew the Hayes Pack was in the wrong.

"Aaliyah is off the table," Evelyn declared, her voice leaving no room for negotiation. She withdrew her aura slightly, allowing Charlotte to gasp for air.

Evelyn turned her sharp gaze to the corner of the room. "Gladys!"

Elder Omega Gladys, Evelyn’s most trusted head maid, stepped forward immediately, bowing low. "Yes, Elder Luna."

"Use the Mind-Link," Evelyn commanded, her tone pure ice. "Reach out to the training grounds and the social gatherings. Summon Beta Cloyd's daughters, Alexandria and Emmaline. And find Bradford's bastard, Brylee. Bring them to my hall immediately. If Antonia Brewer wants to inspect our girls, we will give her a lineup."

"Right away, My Lady," Gladys replied, her eyes briefly flashing silver as she accessed the Pack's mental network.

Charlotte remained on the floor, trembling and utterly defeated. Her plan to use me as a shield had spectacularly backfired.

I took a slow sip of the warm water Kaela handed me, the tension finally leaving my shoulders. I was safe under the Dowager's wing. Now, I just had to watch as my ambitious cousins were summoned to fight over a poisoned crown.
