The Wife He Never Deserved Chapter 1

Nina

I stared at the screen, the phone trembling in my hand. The contact name said it all: Husband.

I had called it expecting a stranger. But the moment his voice came through—warm, confused, laced with affection—I forgot how to breathe.

“Baby? Why did you call?”

Daryl. My husband.

Except the woman lying in the stretcher beside me had asked me to call her husband. And she was the one clutching her abdomen in pain, not me.

My heart turned to glass and shattered quietly in my chest.

He didn’t recognize my voice. I’d been fighting off a cold, my throat raw and hoarse—but that didn’t matter now. What mattered was that I was in an ambulance, holding the hand of a woman named Johanna, trying to keep her calm as she begged me to save her unborn child.

And I had just called my own husband on her behalf.

I forced myself to speak through the choking silence. “Sir… your wife is on the way to the hospital. She’s experiencing abdominal pain, possibly a miscarriage.”

A sharp inhale, followed by panic. “I’m coming now.”

Click. Line dead.

I sat frozen beside her, the cold plastic of the seat pressing into my back, the sirens wailing around me like a cruel reminder.

How did I get here?

---

It began with a surprise. I had boarded the flight with a fluttering heart and a secret burning in my chest. After a year of long-distance calls and pixelated goodnights, I was finally going to see Daryl again.

We’d been married two years, but this past one had tested us—him stationed in Spain as a soldier, and me in the U.S., neck-deep in hospital rotations. Despite the distance, I held on. And now, I was going to surprise him.

Even better, I had secured a week-long volunteer spot at a local hospital near his base. The plan was perfect. Until it wasn’t.

About halfway through the flight, a scream pierced the hum of the engines.

“My baby! Please!”

I turned, adrenaline flooding my veins. A young woman clutched her belly, sobbing in agony.

The flight attendant’s voice crackled overhead: “Is there a doctor onboard?”

“I’m a doctor!” I said, already on my feet.

I knelt beside her—Johanna, she said—and began a quick assessment. She was seventeen weeks pregnant, terrified, in pain, and possibly losing her baby.

I worked fast, giving calm instructions, checking her pulse, issuing commands for compresses, water, oxygen. The plane descended agonizingly slow. When we landed, paramedics rushed in. I couldn’t let go—not yet.

That’s how I ended up in the ambulance. That’s how she handed me her phone. That’s how I dialed his number.

---

The hospital lights were harsh as we pulled in. The emergency team moved efficiently, but my mind was drifting, spiraling.

“You must be the visiting volunteer,” one of the staff said, guiding me inside.

“Yes. Dr. Nina.”

“We could use help—are you up for it?”

I nodded, my voice robotic. “Of course.”

I changed into PPE, grateful for the distraction. I needed the numbness. I needed something to keep me from thinking.

Then they assigned me to the same patient.

I stepped into the room—and stopped.

There he was.

Daryl.

Sitting beside Johanna, holding her hand. The same hand that once rested on my back as I fell asleep. The same eyes that used to search for mine across crowded rooms.

And now?

They were only looking at her.
