The Wife He Discarded Owns His Empire Chapter 1

“I want you gone by sunrise.”

The words landed cold across the marble dining table, sharp enough to cut through the faint clink of crystal.

I stared at the man I’d married two years ago — Kael Voss, the billionaire everyone envied me for.

To the world, we were the perfect power couple, splashed across magazine covers and business headlines. But behind closed doors, I was nothing more than a placeholder he’d agreed to take, to settle an old family bargain struck long before we met.

My fingers tightened around the stem of my wine glass. I’d braced myself for this conversation for months ever since the board had cleared the final inheritance clause, but hearing it said out loud still knocked the breath from my chest.

“Just like that?” I asked, my voice steady even though my throat burned.

Kael didn’t look up from his tablet. His jaw was hard, his gaze distant, like speaking to me was a tedious chore he wanted over with fast. “The contract’s almost up. My family’s terms are fulfilled.” He cleared his throat. There’s no reason to keep you in this house any longer.”

Two years of invisible work flashed through my mind.

I’d sat through every boring business gala, smiled for every camera, smoothed every fight between his mother and his sharp‑tempered board members.

I’d stayed up late drafting public statements when his brand nearly collapsed, and skipped my own sister’s graduation to fly across the country and stand by his side when he closed his biggest international deal.

I’d learned to keep quiet when he came home late, reeking of another woman’s perfume, when he brushed past me like I was a piece of furniture. All so he could claim his full inheritance. And now he was throwing me away without a second thought.

His mother, Elara, stepped into the dining room at that moment, her silk gown sweeping the floor. She’d never liked me; she thought I was too ordinary, too soft, because I was not born into old money like them. She rested a hand on Kael’s shoulder and shot me a cold, triumphant look.

“Lila, it’s for the best,” she said, her tone sweet but sharp. “You know you never truly belonged here.”

She smiled. “Kael’s proper match is arriving next week. The daughter of the Hale‑Winston group. She’s the one who was meant for him all along.”

A bitter laugh caught in my throat. So that was it. They’d been waiting for the right replacement all this time, letting me play the wife until the richer, more suitable candidate was ready.

I set my glass down carefully. My hands curled in a fist. “I gave him two years of my life. I fixed his reputation when the press tore him apart. I kept his family from falling apart when his father died. I stayed up nights patching every crack no one else saw. And now you tell me I’m just… disposable?” I said, my voice breaking at every word.

Kael finally lifted his eyes to meet mine. There was no regret in them — only impatience. “You were paid for your time, Lila. The settlement is in your lawyer’s inbox. Take it and leave quietly. Don’t make a scene.”

The worst part wasn’t that he didn’t love me. It was that he’d never even bothered to pretend he might. He’d treated our whole marriage like a temporary business arrangement, and I’d foolishly hoped it could turn into something real.

I stood up, pushing my chair back against the polished floor. My hands shook, but I didn’t let them see me cry. I’d spent too long shrinking myself small to fit into their perfect world. But not tonight.

“I’ll take the settlement,” I said, looking between them. “But don’t think this is the end of it. You think I’m just some girl you can cast aside when you’re done using me?”

I looked at Kael dead in the eye. “I won’t disappear quietly.”

Elara’s smile faded. Kael’s brow tightened, like he was only just realizing I wasn’t going to beg or break down as they’d expected.

He slammed the chair and walked away.

I opened my mouth to say more, but a sharp, familiar wave of nausea rolled over me.

My mind flashed back to the doctor’s appointment three days earlier.

I’d gone in thinking the constant nausea and fatigue were just stress from the long, draining months. But the doctor had handed me the printed slip, her tone gentle but clear: the test was positive.

I’d stuffed the paper in my bag, too stunned to process it then.

And now the bitter truth they didn't know crashed over me. My fingers flew to my stomach as I stared at the two people who wanted me gone before sunrise.

The doctor had confirmed it. I was carrying Kael’s child.
