For twenty-two years, I exhausted my mind and body to make my husband, David, a billionaire.

I even sold my late mother's heirloom to pay for my son Leo's elite medical school.

They were my heaven, swearing they would protect and cherish me forever.

Then, a truck crashed into my car, leaving me in a deep coma.

I woke up paralyzed in the hospital transfer ambulance, only to hear the two men I loved most discussing my death.

"Sign the DNR, Leo," David whispered, adjusting his tie. "We need the company funds for Monica's investment, not a vegetable."

"Done, Dad," Leo replied without hesitation, handing over the clipboard. "Let's go. Your engagement party starts in an hour, and I need my trust fund unlocked."

The ambulance tire hit a pothole, jarring my shattered ribs and forcing my eyes open to the blinding fluorescent light. A thick plastic tube shoved down my throat choked off my gag reflex, scraping against my windpipe with every mechanical breath. Three weeks of nothing but blackness since the semi-truck crushed my sedan, and I woke up to the sound of my husband negotiating my death.

"I am not writing another check to that hospital," David Sterling said, his voice cutting through the hum of the engine and the rhythmic beep of my heart monitor.

He stood near the rear doors of the moving vehicle, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke navy suit. He looked pristine. Not a single wrinkle marred his clothing, his dark hair perfectly slicked back, while I lay strapped to a gurney, smelling of iodine and stale blood.

"Dad, the doctors said she might still have brain activity."

My twenty-two-year-old son, Leo, leaned against the metal cabinets, tapping his phone screen. He didn't even glance in my direction. The blue light from his screen reflected off his glasses.

"Brain activity doesn't pay the bills, Leo." David smoothed his silk tie, his jaw tight. "Do you have any idea what life support costs per day? It is a hemorrhage of cash. I need that capital for Monica's startup."

Monica. My former assistant. The girl I trained, the one who smiled at me every morning and handed me my coffee.

My chest tried to heave, but the ventilator forced a mechanical rhythm, pushing air into my lungs against my will. I stared at the ceiling, trapped inside my own paralyzed body.

"Monica's company is launching next month," David continued, his tone sharp and irritated. "I promised her the seed money. I refuse to tie up my liquid assets in a vegetative wife who is never waking up."

"You told me the insurance covered the accident." Leo finally pocketed his phone.

"The auto insurance covered the car." David paced a tight circle in the limited space. "Her health insurance maxed out two weeks ago. The ICU charged ten thousand dollars a day. Ten thousand, Leo. I am bleeding out financially because your mother forgot how to check a blind spot."

The lie tasted foul even just hearing it. The police report stated clearly that the semi-truck ran a red light. I did nothing wrong. He was rewriting history to justify his greed.

"So what are we supposed to do?" Leo crossed his arms, looking annoyed rather than grieving. "Just leave her here? The hospital kicked her out."

"That is why we are transferring her to the hospice facility. But we don't even need to make it that far. You sign the paper."

David snatched a clipboard from the EMT sitting quietly in the corner and shoved it against Leo's chest.

"I already signed as her medical proxy. The transport team wants a second adult family signature for an expedited DNR." David tapped a manicured finger against the bold print. "Do Not Resuscitate. We pull the plug, and this nightmare ends today."

I waited for Leo to scream at him. I waited for my son to throw the clipboard back in his father's face. I raised him. I stayed up with his fevers, paid for his tutors, loved him when David ignored us both for his golf trips and late-night meetings. He was my flesh and blood.

Leo stared at the clipboard. He tapped his fingers against the metal clip.

"If I sign this, the trust fund unlocks, right?"

The words sliced through me. A cold numbness washed over my limbs, replacing the physical pain of my broken bones.

"Yes." David's tone softened into a conspiratorial purr. "The estate goes to probate, but your tuition trust bypasses all of that. You will have the cash by Friday."

"Are you sure? Because last time you said the lawyers needed a death certificate."

"And this will give us the death certificate." David pushed closer to him. "Sign it, Leo. Or do you want to start medical school broke, living in campus housing instead of your downtown loft?"

Leo's jaw clenched. "No."

"Then do it. Stop stalling."

The pen scratched against the paper. A harsh, jagged sound over the wail of the sirens.

He handed the clipboard back to the EMT.

"Done," Leo said, his voice flat. "How long does it take?"

"Once I disconnect the ventilator and IV support, it could happen within minutes," the paramedic replied, his voice devoid of emotion. He wore a dark blue uniform, his name tag reading Grant. "Are you absolutely sure about this, gentlemen? There is no going back once I stop the machines."

"We are sure." David answered without a second of hesitation. "She wouldn't want to live like this. It is a mercy."

Mercy.

He wanted to fund his mistress's business, and my son wanted tuition and spending money.

My fingernails dug into the rigid plastic of the gurney. A sharp sting registered in my palm as the skin broke. The muscles in my hand twitched.

The ambulance slowed, then turned sharply. Through the rear windows, a stone sign appeared beneath the wash of the emergency lights: HAWTHORNE HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE. David exhaled as though he had reached the end of an exhausting business negotiation.

"We will wait outside," he told the paramedic. "Call me when it is done."

Leo glanced at the monitor for the first time. For one reckless second, I searched his face for doubt. His gaze moved from the green pulse line to the watch on his wrist.

"Friday," he said to David. "You promised the trust would clear by Friday."

"It will."

The rear doors opened. Wet night air swept through the ambulance, sharp with rain and exhaust. David climbed down first. Leo followed without touching me, without saying goodbye. The doors slammed behind them.

The paramedic remained beside the gurney, his gloved hand hovering over the ventilator controls. His face had gone pale during their conversation. He looked at the signed form, then at the pulse on the monitor.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

My body answered before my voice could. Pain tore through my forearm as I forced every surviving nerve to obey. My right index finger dragged across the plastic rail with a faint, unmistakable scrape.

The paramedic stopped.

I did it again.

His eyes snapped to my hand. The monitor accelerated, each beep striking faster than the last. He leaned closer, no longer seeing a body waiting to die.

My fingers curled around his wrist just as he reached for the ventilator valve.
