The grandfather clock in the hall chimed seven, each toll a heavy hammer blow against the oppressive silence of the living room.

Chloe Sharp's fingers curled into the fabric of her dress, her knuckles white. Her gaze was fixed on the ornate double doors, unable to look away.

The doors burst open.

Damien Beaumont strode in, carrying the chill of the New York night on his expensive custom suit.

He didn't even look at her.

He threw his leather briefcase onto the long mahogany table. The sound cracked through the room, a sentence being passed.

From the case, he pulled a sheaf of papers and tossed them onto the coffee table in front of her. They scattered slightly, the words at the top stabbing at her eyes: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

"Sign it."

His voice was cold, devoid of any emotion, echoing in the vast, empty space.

A tremor went through Chloe's body. She looked up, her eyes wide with disbelief at the man who was, in name, her husband. The man who had pushed her into this abyss.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The trauma had stolen her voice. She could only lift a trembling hand, her fingers forming a question in the air. Why?

A humorless laugh escaped him. He turned his head away in disgust. "I have no interest in watching what the mute is signing."

Her heart plunged. A physical, painful drop in her chest. She lowered her hand and, with a surge of desperation, pointed to her own stomach. Her eyes pleaded with him.

His gaze finally fell to the slight swell of her belly, but his expression only grew colder, laced with revulsion. "Don't try to blackmail me with that bastard."

He leaned over her, his tall frame casting a suffocating shadow. "I will not raise another man's child."

The butler, Hobbs, approaching with a glass of water, heard the words. His hand jerked, water sloshing over the rim. He looked from Damien's rigid back to Chloe's devastated face, his expression a mixture of fear and pity.

Chloe shook her head violently, tears blurring her vision. She wanted to scream, to explain, but her throat was a blocked passage of grief. Only a choked, guttural sob escaped.

Damien straightened up, adjusting his tie as if he'd touched something unclean. "The agreement is generous. You leave with nothing. It's what you deserve."

He took a pen from his pocket and threw it onto the papers. It landed with a sharp clatter.

"You have ten minutes."

With that, he turned his back on her, walking to the liquor cabinet to pour himself a glass of whiskey. He stood there, refusing any further communication.

Chloe stared at the agreement, the strength draining from her limbs. Two years. Two years since she married into the Beaumont family, and all she had received was endless humiliation and misunderstanding.

She remembered the car crash two years ago. She had thrown herself in front of Damien's sister, Stella, saving her but sustaining injuries that had left her with selective mutism.

But everyone, led by Damien, believed she had orchestrated the crash out of jealousy. He hated her for it. Hated her with a passion that burned away everything else.

Ten minutes passed.

Damien finished his drink, placing the heavy crystal glass down on the bar with a thud.

He turned. He saw she hadn't moved. The impatience on his face hardened into fury.

He strode toward her, his steps heavy with menace. He grabbed her wrist, his grip like steel, and yanked her brutally from the sofa.

Pain shot up her arm. She stumbled, her other hand flying instinctively to her stomach.

Hobbs took a step forward, his face pale. "Sir-"

A single, warning glare from Damien froze him in place.

Damien dragged her toward the grand staircase. "Since you won't sign," he snarled, a cruel satisfaction in his voice, "I'll give you a reminder of who your husband is."

He threw her onto the massive bed in their master suite. The mattress bounced, making her head spin.

He began to unknot his tie, his deep blue eyes burning with a mixture of rage and a twisted, possessive fire.

Chloe scrambled backward in terror, but he was on her in an instant, his weight pinning her down. He leaned close, his breath hot against her ear.

"After what you did to Stella," he whispered, the words a venomous promise, "you don't deserve a moment of happiness."

He ignored her struggles, her silent, streaming tears. He took her with a punishing force that was all about humiliation, not passion.

When it was over, he rose, looking down at her broken form on the bed without a flicker of warmth. He was a stranger. Worse than a stranger.

He adjusted his clothes, as if he had just completed a distasteful chore.

"I'll have a doctor come and check," he said, his voice flat and cruel. "If this child is truly mine, I will keep it. As for you, sign the papers and get out of the Beaumont house."
