SCARLETT
As I stepped outside, it took less than three minutes before I came to an abrupt halt. A strange uproar made me furious.
"Yes, finally!"
"Accept! Accept!! Accept!!!"
"Finally, we will leave a real Luna!"
I sighted a large group of people around me, their voices a chorus of joy, chanting and leaping in celebration as I emerged from the palace.
I forced myself into the crowd, recognizing the familiar faces of pack members, their eyes bright with anticipation.
What was happening?
I moved forward, curious to know what caused such an uproar, but some in the crowd shoved me aside, their expression dismissive as if they didn't see or recognize me as Luna. But I was too used to it to care.
Then, as I pushed through the throng, I caught a glimpse of the scene unfolding ahead. It was a man on his knees, and ...hold up. My heart raced.
There, on his knees, was Alpha John, holding a ring box above his head. The bright smile on his face was radiant, his eyes soft and glowing in a way I had never seen before.
They were fixed on a woman whose mouth fell open in shock-his ex-girlfriend, Maria.
My heart sank like a stone, and the joy surrounding me fell like a cruel joke. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was proposing to her.
As if sinking was not enough, my heart shattered into a million pieces, the sharp pain radiating through my chest as confusion filled me.
I took a step forward, my lips parting to speak, but before I could utter a word, someone from behind shoved me hard. I stumbled, colliding with Maria, and we both tumbled to the floor.
"Ah..."
"Ouch! Alpha John!" Maria cried out, her voice filled with panic as she clutched her stomach, tears running down her cheeks.
I quickly stood up and looked at John, shaking my head while trying to explain my innocence. I instinctively reached out to help her up even though a part of me rejoiced that she really deserved it even though it wasn't intentional.
But suddenly, a scorching slap rang across my face, the impact sending me tumbling to the ground.
Stars danced in my vision as I struggled to process what had just happened to me.
"How dare you try to hurt my Luna?! Do you wish for death?! I looked up to see his eyes blazing with anger, a red hue that sent a chill down my spine.
Fear gripped me as I watched him scoop Maria into his arms, his expression softening as he pressed his lips to hers.
He cuddled her gently, patting her back as she wept, her tears spilling onto his shirt. Never had John raised a hand against me, except when we were intimate and he did it for the fun of it.
But now, he was showing this sweet side of himself for her-his childhood lover, the very woman he had assured me was nothing more than a business partner.
So all this while he had been cheating on me. He had been lying to me.
The pain turned into anger as I immediately sparked, "You betrayed me!" You fucking betrayed me, John! So this is why you rejected me? What have I ever done to deserve this?
I cried out loud as tears blurred my vision. Everyone in the crowd watched the scenario going on, but I didn't care about them. I am so broken right now to think of hundreds of people watching me. Whatever, let them watch. I am a slave to them, a curse and forbidden to them. I have no worth in their sight.
"Is she sick or something?" One voice whispered, filled with disdain.
"She is being delusional," another chimed in. They can never keep their mouths shut, bunch of fools, parrots.
"She deserves death for these accusations!" someone shouted, their words slicing through my heart.
They were all directed towards me, but I barely registered their taunt; my focus remained on John.
All I could see was him, the man I once thought would be mine forever.
However, Alpha John completely ignored me, his gaze locked onto Maria as if I were invisible. It felt like I was speaking to myself.
I could only watch, paralyzed, as he slipped the ring onto her finger.
A collective gasp erupted from the crowd, followed by a chorus of cheers and jubilation. Screams that pierced the air like a newly sharpened knife. I caught snippets of harsh whispers directed at me; each word raised the adrenaline in me.
I looked at the glistening diamond ring in the sunlight. I had once seen that ring before in his cupboard. It was the same ring I had admired, and when I had asked him about it, he told me it was a prop for an advertisement.
I mean, I get it all now. He had secured that precious ring for his ex-girlfriend Maria. What a big fool, pain flooded my heart.
I never had any worth to him. I was brought into his life like a parcel, into his life because of his father, and now that he's dead, I am just like things to him.
"Oh, so you thought our great Alpha John was going to choose a dirty sex slave over his beautiful girlfriend, right?" You must be a great fool.
A lady from the crowd yelled out, her voice dripping with mockery as everyone began to laugh cruelly, like she cracked a funny joke. If shame were a person, I would have been his mother.
My hands clenched into tight fists at my sides, the anger boiling inside of me as I watched them embrace.
"Ah...Ah..." Maria suddenly cried out, her face contorting in distress. She pressed her hands against her stomach, her eyes wide with feigned panic.
"Our baby, Alpha! I feel pain in my
Yummy! She wailed, her voice rising in pitch, drawing even more attention.
A baby? The words echoed in my mind, sending shock through me.
She's PREGNANT?
SCARLETT
Like a dagger pointed at my heart, the word lingered in the air. expecting a child. The voices around me faded into a muffled hum, and for a moment it felt like the entire world was tilting on its axis. My breath caught, my chest constricted, and I stumbled backward as though the weight of that one word alone would have crushed me to the ground.
"She's carrying my pup," John's voice thundered proudly above the roar of the crowd, his words slicing through me like a silver blade. His face once the rare home of fleeting warmth for me was now glowing with pride, his lips curved in a smile I had never earned, not even in our most intimate moments.
A raw cry tore from my throat before I could stop it. "No... no, this isn't real." My vision blurred with tears, my legs trembling as I looked from John to Maria, who clutched her stomach and leaned into his embrace like the perfect damsel in distress. Her eyes flickered briefly to me mocking, triumphant and I understood. This was no accident. She wanted me destroyed, and she had succeeded.
The pack roared with approval. Cheers, laughter, joyous cries that mocked my misery. The people I was supposed to lead as Luna rejoiced in my downfall.
"She's carrying the true heir!" someone shouted.
"The goddess has blessed our Alpha!" another cried.
"And cursed that slave he was forced to mate!" came a cruel voice from the back, met with the thunder of agreement.
I wanted to scream. To tell them that I was Luna, that I bore the mark of the Moon Goddess herself when she bound me to John. But what was the use? To them, I was nothing. Less than nothing. A slave wearing a Luna's crown that never truly fit.
My knees buckled. The stones beneath me bit into my skin as I fell, my palms scraping against the rough ground. I didn't care. Pain in my body was nothing compared to the agony ripping my soul apart.
"John," I whispered, lifting my tear-streaked face toward him. He didn't look at me. Not once. His entire being was centered on Maria. His hands stroked her hair, his lips pressed against her forehead in a gesture of tenderness I had begged for, dreamed of, and never received.
I wanted to crawl forward, to beg, to scream until he remembered me. But my body wouldn't move. My voice was lost in the sea of celebration.
And then I heard her voice. Soft. Sweet. Poison wrapped in honey.
"She tried to hurt me, John... she pushed me. What if something happens to our baby?" Maria's words dripped with false fear as she clung tighter to him.
My head snapped up, my eyes wide with disbelief. "That's a lie!" I screamed, my voice hoarse and desperate. "I didn't-"
But before the truth could spill, his hand cracked across my cheek. The sound echoed louder than the crowd, louder than my own heartbeat. I fell sideways onto the ground, my vision swimming as my ears rang.
The world tilted again. My face burned. My dignity, my soul, my very existence felt shattered beneath that slap.
"Dare to harm her or my child again, and I will rip you apart myself!" John's growl vibrated through the air, final and merciless.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Some sneered at me, others shook their heads as if I were the filth they'd always believed. Their eyes stabbed into me, each glance a reminder that I had no place here.
Something inside me cracked.
Tears stung, but I resisted allowing them to witness my continued breakdown. I pushed myself up slowly, my cheek throbbing from his hand, my pride bleeding out on the ground. My legs trembled, but I stood. Even if I was broken, even if my heart was in pieces, I wouldn't kneel before them anymore.
My lips quivered as I whispered, "The Moon Goddess chose me as your mate, John. Whether you deny me, betray me, or strike me... I will always be your Luna. But know this-" my voice wavered, then steadied, sharp as shattered glass, "-one day, you will regret this."
A hush fell for just a moment, the words cutting through the madness.
John's eyes finally met mine. For a fleeting second, I thought I saw something there hesitation? Doubt? No. It was gone as quickly as it came. He pulled Maria closer, shielding her with his body as though I were a threat instead of the woman the Moon herself had tied him to.
"You're no Luna of mine," he spat. His words were a death sentence. "From this moment on, you are nothing but a slave. And when the sun rises tomorrow, your place will be in the quarters where you belong. Step out of line, Scarlett, and I won't hesitate to end you."
Gasps rippled through the pack once more, but this time no one objected. Not one person stood for me. Not even those I had once called friends among the servants.
I felt cold. Empty. My body moved on its own, turning away from them, walking back through the crowd that parted with mocking smiles and whispers. Each step felt heavier than the last. My head spun, my body screamed to collapse, but I didn't let them see it. I wouldn't give them that satisfaction.
Behind me, the cheers resumed, loud and thunderous, celebrating Maria's supposed pregnancy and my downfall. The sound chased me like a storm as I slipped away into the shadows of the pack house.
By the time I reached the solitude of the slave quarters, my chest heaved with sobs I could no longer hold back. I collapsed onto the straw bed that had once been mine before John had taken me into his mansion. Full circle. Back to nothing.
I pressed a trembling hand against my chest. The mate bond pulsed faintly still, fragile but unbroken. The Moon Goddess had bound me to him, but John had shattered it with betrayal. I could feel the crack, the agony tearing me apart from the inside.
My tears soaked the thin blanket beneath me as I curled into myself. Alone. Rejected. Betrayed.
Yet, even through the haze of pain, a small ember sparked within me.
I had lost everything tonight my title, my dignity, the man I had loved beyond reason. But I was still breathing. And as long as I lived, the story wasn't over.
I didn't know how, or when, but I swore on the Goddess herself... one day, they would all regret underestimating me.
SCARLETT
The night dragged on with a cruel heaviness, like chains pulling me deeper into despair. I lay on the thin straw bed, my body curled in on itself, the taste of salt and bitterness heavy on my tongue from hours of weeping. My swollen eyes ached, my throat felt raw, and my chest burned with every breath I took.
The slave quarters smelled of damp wood and dust, the familiar scent of a life I thought I had left behind. The walls were thin, cracked in places, and carried every sound from outside-muffled laughter of guards, distant cheers still echoing faintly from the square where Maria and John had been celebrated. Every reminder was a knife carving me open.
I pressed my face into the rough blanket to stifle the sobs, but they tore out of me anyway. My heart was screaming. I kept hearing his words-"You are nothing but a slave." The echo of that sentence refused to fade.
Nothing. That was what I was to him. What I had always been to this pack.
My fingers dug into my chest, clawing at the place where the mate bond throbbed faintly, like a wound that refused to close. It should have been broken after his rejection, but it lingered, torn and fraying, refusing to let me rest. The Goddess had tied my soul to his, and no amount of cruelty seemed enough to sever it.
"Why me?" I whispered into the darkness. "Why did You give me to him?"
The silence stretched, cold and merciless. I closed my eyes, wishing for sleep to take me, to pull me into a dreamless void where I didn't have to feel.
But sleep came differently that night.
It was sudden, sharp, like being pulled underwater. My breath hitched as my body stilled, and I found myself standing in a place I didn't recognize. A forest stretched endlessly around me, bathed in silver light. The air hummed with power, the kind that made the hairs on my arms rise.
The moon hung enormous in the sky, larger than I had ever seen, glowing with a radiance that lit every leaf, every stone, every shadow. Its light touched me, warm and cool at the same time, seeping into my bones like a gentle embrace.
My heart thudded. Was this a dream? Or something more?
"Scarlett."
The voice was soft but carried through the air with the weight of eternity. It came from everywhere and nowhere at once, wrapping around me like silk. I spun in place, my breath catching as the silver light before me shifted and took shape.
A woman stood there, robed in white that shimmered like water under the moon. Her eyes glowed with liquid silver, her hair spilling down her back like molten light. I knew instantly who she was. Every wolf knew.
"The Moon Goddess..." I whispered, falling to my knees. My tears flowed freely, my body trembling in awe and fear.
She reached a hand toward me, her expression both kind and sorrowful. "My child," she said, her voice carrying warmth that soothed the raw edges of my heart. "Do not bow before me. Stand, for you are not meant to kneel forever."
Her words struck me, sharp and strange. My legs wobbled as I rose slowly, my eyes fixed on hers. "Why... why did you do this to me?" The question burst from me before I could stop it. "Why bond me to a man who despises me? Why condemn me to this pain?"
The Goddess's gaze softened, but there was sorrow in her silver eyes. "You see only the pain of today, Scarlett, not the purpose of tomorrow." She stepped closer, her presence overwhelming, filling me with both fear and comfort. "The mate I gave you has rejected his destiny. But your journey does not end in his betrayal. It begins."
My lips trembled. "Begins? How? He has humiliated me, cast me aside, chosen another. What is left for me but suffering?"
"You are stronger than you believe," she said gently. "And though the bond between you and John bleeds, it has not died. It will fade with time, but your spirit will not. You are chosen not because of him, but because of who you are. You are destined for more than the chains they put upon you."
Her hand reached out, brushing lightly against my cheek. The touch was cool, soothing the heat of my swollen skin. "The darkness will not end tonight. You will endure more trials, more betrayals. But through them, you will grow. And when the time comes, you will rise-not as a rejected Luna, but as a Queen."
Her words shivered through me, impossible and yet undeniable.
"Queen?" I repeated, my voice breaking on the word. "I can barely stand. I am hated by everyone, even my mate. How could I ever become anything more?"
A faint smile touched her lips. "Because pain forges steel, Scarlett. And you... you are my chosen flame."
Before I could respond, the ground beneath me shuddered. The forest wavered, the moonlight dimming. The Goddess's form began to fade, dissolving back into silver light.
"Wait!" I cried out, reaching toward her. "Don't leave me! Please, tell me more!"
Her voice lingered even as her form vanished. "Trust yourself. Trust the path I have laid before you. And when you are at your weakest, remember-I have not abandoned you."
The forest dissolved into blackness.
My eyes flew open, my body jerking upright on the straw bed. My heart pounded violently, sweat clung to my skin, and my breaths came ragged and fast.
The quarters were still dark, silent save for the distant chirp of crickets. But the echo of her voice still filled me, warm and terrifying.
The Moon Goddess had spoken to me. To me, Scarlett, the enslaved Luna, the rejected mate.
I pressed my shaking hands to my chest, my mind reeling. Could it be true? Did I truly have more in store for me? Or was I simply being tormented by this cruel dream?
But deep inside, something had shifted. The void that had previously engulfed me was no longer absolute. In the ashes of my heart, a spark flickered.
I lay back slowly, staring at the ceiling, her words replaying again and again. Not the end. The beginning. Chosen flame. Queen.
For the first time since John's betrayal, I felt a sliver of something unfamiliar.
Not hope. Not yet.
But strength.
