The Real MVP:She Ran His Playbook Chapter 1

The first thing I heard when I stepped into my house was my husband saying another woman’s name.

I stopped in the hallway, keys still in my hand.

The sound came again from the master bedroom, low and breathless. Then a woman laughed.

Max Thorne.

I had come home early because Anson had texted that he was exhausted and needed to sleep before tomorrow’s game. The paper bag slipped from my hand.

Inside the bedroom, Max giggled again.

“Anson, stop. What if she comes back?”

“She won’t,” he said in a relaxed manner.

A coldness spread through my chest. I wanted to scream but my body went quiet.

I walked past his framed rookie jersey, the magazine cover I had negotiated and our wedding photo turned face down because visitors were never supposed to know I was his wife.

I pushed the bedroom door open.

Anson froze in response.

Max, on the other hand, did not. She sat on my side of the bed, wrapped in my white sheet. Anson stood beside her, shirtless, his face draining of color.

For five years, I had managed every crisis in his life. Bad press. Sponsors. Fans. Everything.

This time, I just looked at him.

I thought I would see shame in his eyes. Regret. Something human enough for me to hold on to.

There was only fear of being caught.

“Barbara,” he said, grabbing his shirt. “This is not what it looks like.”

Max raised her brows. “It looks pretty clear to me.”

I looked at the floor. His belt was beside my slippers. Her red heel was under my vanity. My perfume bottle was open.

“You used my perfume?” I asked.

Max smiled. “It smells expensive.”

Anson stepped toward me. “Barb, listen. It was a mistake.”

“A loud one.” I retorted.

His jaw tightened. “Don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Act like you don’t understand how things work. The online stuff with Max, the comments, the flirting. It’s publicity. You built the campaign.”

“I built your career,” I said heatedly.

The words came out flat but they tore something on their way out. I had not just loved him. I had worked for him. I had disappeared for him.

Max laughed softly. “Wow.”

I looked at her. “Shut up.”

In response, she slid off the bed, still holding my sheet around her body.

“Sister,” she said sweetly, “you’re so understanding, aren’t you? You shouldn't mind.”

My stomach turned. “Don’t call me that.”

“But you are his wife. At least on paper.” She tilted her head. “He told me.”

I looked at Anson. “You told her?”

“I had to explain why things couldn’t get messy,” he said quickly. “She needed to understand there were boundaries.”

Boundaries.

He had turned my marriage into a public relations risk. I was no longer his wife. I was a clause he could explain to another woman in my bed.

Max smiled wider. “It’s just sex. You get the ring, I get the headlines.”

Pain should have become rage. Rather, it became a decision.

I would not beg, I thought.

Then Anson said the worst thing ever he could have said.

“Barbara, we have a game tomorrow.”

“We can talk after the game,” he added. “I need to focus. Scouts, sponsors, press, everything. We can’t blow it up tonight.”

I stared at him. “We?”

He pointed between us like we were still a team.

For years, “we” had meant me answering agents at two in the morning, writing his apologies, building the man the world applauded.

Now “we” meant I should swallow the woman in my bed because kickoff mattered more.

I made my second decision then.

I would not protect him from the consequences of hurting me.

He was going to pay.

I turned around just then.

“Where are you going?” he asked in surprise.

“To sleep somewhere that hasn’t been occupied.”

He followed me into the hallway. “Don’t embarrass me tomorrow.”

I turned slowly. “You brought another woman into our bedroom and you’re worried I’ll embarrass you?”

His face hardened. “I’m saying don’t make this public.”

Max appeared behind him. “Honestly, that would be so bad for his image.”

I looked at both of them.

Then I smiled.

It was small. Cold. So calm that Anson took a step back.

“Good night.”

I picked up my bag and left the house.

I cried only in the back seat of a cab, with my wedding ring cutting into my finger.

No sobbing. No shaking. Just tears slipping down my face while Anson’s name lit up my phone until the screen went dark.

By morning, the tears were gone. My phone rang before six.

I was already in a black car heading to the airport, my laptop open on my knees.

“Where the hell are you?” Anson demanded.

“On my way to the airport.”

“Without me?”

“I have prep to do.”

“You always wait for me.”

“I used to.”

Before he could answer, Max’s voice came through the line.

“Babe, who is it?”

Babe.

One word, and my chest tightened.

“Is she at the house?” I asked.

“She came to apologize.”

“To me?”

“Yes.”

“At six in the morning?”

He said nothing just then.

Max’s voice rose. “Tell her I really wanted to clear the air but she wasn’t home.”

My mouth curved, but nothing about it was happy.

“Anson,” I said, “do not fucking insult me. Do not do that.”

Then I ended the call.

By noon, the stadium was chaos. Fans chanted Anson’s name beyond the tunnel.

I stood beside the transport bay with a clipboard, running through the schedule.

“No locker room interviews before warm-up,” I said. “If they ask about Max, redirect to the foundation. If they ask about his knee, he’s cleared and focused.”

Work steadied me. Give me a problem, and I could solve it. Give me pain and I could fold it where no one saw it.

Then I turned and nearly walked into Max.

“Still here?” she asked.

“This is a restricted area.”

She took off her sunglasses. “I’m with Anson.”

“So is half the stadium.”

“Barbara,” Anson said. “Can we not do this here?”

“I’m working.”

Max snatched my clipboard. “This schedule is terrible. Why is his livestream after the sponsor meet? The fans want him first.”

“The sponsor paid seven figures for first access.”

Max looked at Anson. “See? She thinks like an assistant, not a brand strategist.”

Anson did not defend me.

A hot pressure rose behind my eyes but I forced it down. I would not cry here.

She stepped closer.

“Face it, Barbara. You’re obsolete. You have no connections, no power, and no talent. You’re just a plain, boring woman holding him back.”

I looked at Anson. “Are you going to say something?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Max has a point.”

A laugh escaped me even though it was not funny at all. Five years of loyalty being sold for one pretty woman with a trending hashtag. I couldn't believe it.

Max lifted her phone. “Actually, I already spoke to Derek from Velocity. He agrees the team needs fresher management around Anson’s image.”

Before I could respond to that, my phone buzzed just then and I got a message:

Barbara, due to restructuring around Anson’s public-facing strategy, we’ll no longer require your services for today’s sponsor coordination. Please transfer relevant materials to Max’s team.

I read it once. Then again.

The noise in the loading bay seemed to pull back.

I had lost my marriage last night. Now he was watching another woman take the work I had built with my own hands?

Max shoved the clipboard against my chest.

“Pack up your cheap suits and go back to whatever pathetic desk you came from,” she said. “And tell the locker room attendant to bring us sparkling water.”

Anson looked away.

That hurt more than the message.

Not because I wanted him to save me but because once, he would have.

Or maybe I had only imagined that too.

I straightened the pages.

My hands were steady as I did so.

That was how I knew something inside me had finished dying.

“You’ll regret this,” I said.

Max laughed. “People with nothing always say that.”

My phone rang.

It was William Wilson, my brother.

My brother never called during business hours unless it mattered. For five years, he had waited, like he knew one day I would run out of excuses.

I answered.

Behind me, Max was telling someone to move her dressing room closer to Anson’s. A cart rattled across the concrete.

Then William’s voice came through, calm and sharp.

“Have you thought it through?”

I closed my eyes.

The Wilson name sat inside me like a locked door.

My family. My inheritance. My old life. The woman I had buried so Anson Miller could become a star.

For five years, I had told myself love was enough. Standing there with Anson’s silence still burning through me, I finally admitted the truth.

I had not chosen love.

I had chosen to vanish.

“The family needs you, Barbara,” William added.

I opened my eyes and looked at Anson. He was already walking away with Max.

This time, I did not follow.

“William,” I said, “send the car.”

Then he said, “It’s already outside.”
