The Old Apron Hid the Queen of the Family Chapter 1

I had spent thirty years working like a mule. Keeping the front business running, keeping the compound standing, putting every man in this Family before myself.

Finally, my son took a wife, my grandson was sent abroad to be groomed for something soft and respectable, and I thought maybe, just maybe, it was time for me.

So I gathered the courage to ask the man I was bound to, "Do you remember the promise you made me thirty years ago? About seeing the world together, just the two of us?"

He looked uncomfortable, then shook his head. "Antonietta… we're not young anymore. Can you stop being so childish?"

My son and his wife gave me a look, half pity, half irritation. "Ma, we need you here. Be good, eh? Don't go chasing things that don't matter."

I didn't argue. I just nodded.

That night, I happened to see my husband's phone.

There it was. Travel papers, confirmed. Passage to a safe territory abroad.

Five sets of documents: my husband, my son and his wife, my grandson, and my sister, Vittoria.

They were leaving in five days. In that moment, something inside me cracked.

Five days later, I packed their bags, gave them all the reminders they needed, and drove them to the private airstrip myself.

Just before they boarded, my son turned to me and smiled.

"Ma, the compound's in your hands. We'll bring you back something nice, eh?"

I watched them walk off. My husband shoulder to shoulder with Vittoria, my grandson clinging to her hand.

When they disappeared past the hangar, I turned around, went home, and signed the compound over to a buyer.

Then I bought myself one set of traveling papers out of this territory, one way. I had decided. The trip around the world I waited thirty years for?

I finally gave it to myself.

——

"Antonietta, you're not young anymore. You can't just get these wild ideas and run with them. Just because Vittoria's always crossing territories, charming half the bosses on the coast, doesn't mean you should start chasing after her," Salvatore said.

He set his accordion down against the wall with a weary sigh and cracked the knuckles of his right hand, one by one. "She's a woman of the world. Moving around is part of what she does. But you're just the wife who keeps the restaurant open."

He didn't say it to be cruel. He truly believed that was the whole of me.

"You have to understand our situation," he went on. "Our son's stuck in a rough patch, still waiting on his button, God knows how long. Marco's got his schooling across the water. And Vittoria, well, she answers to no one. No blood tying her down, no obligations. You don't have it the same, Antonietta."

Before his words even had time to settle, our son chimed in, his heel bouncing quick and restless under the table.

"Ma, come on. This is your time. You're supposed to be content, family around you, grandkids, the crew fed. Why tire yourself out running off at your age? You should be resting at home. Let us take care of you."

My hands paused in the sink, submerged in cold water. The cracked skin on my fingers, chapped and raw from years of scrubbing pots in that back kitchen, stung like fire. I gritted my teeth, ignored the pain, and quietly set the dishes into the rack.

Just as I stepped out of the kitchen, I caught my grandson's voice, loud and unmistakably annoyed.

"I don't want Grandma picking me up anymore. She always looks a mess and she smells like old cooking oil. She's not like Zia Vittoria. She's beautiful and she carries herself right and she always smells like flowers. The other boys are jealous when she comes. Nobody would even look twice if Grandma Antonietta showed up…"

Marco's words hit harder than they should have. But maybe, deep down, they only confirmed what I already knew.

It was as though someone had hit "mute" on the whole room.

Marco's voice cut off so suddenly it left a ringing silence behind. No one moved afterward.

After a long pause, Salvatore finally spoke, his voice measured. "Kids say thoughtless things, Antonietta. Don't take it to heart. Marco's still young. I'll have a word with him."

But the silence didn't last long.

Marco piped up again, louder this time. "Zia Vittoria travels for the things that matter. Ma and Pa have their work, that matters. Nonno plays in the band, that matters. But Grandma Antonietta doesn't do anything. Nonno, you're the one who told me that! So why are you yelling at me now?"

The moment the words left his mouth, every eye in the room turned to me.

I just stood there, frozen. My mind went blank. It took me a while to collect myself. Then, without a word, I turned and walked slowly back to the bedroom.

I sat on the edge of the bed, opened my palms, and stared at my hands. Rough, callused, cracked from thirty years of labor no one at this table had ever counted.

And for the first time, I had doubts.

Every day I woke at six to go to the market. Breakfast for the family was on the table by seven. By seven-thirty I had my grandson walked to where the car waited. Then the laundry, the mopping, the scrubbing, the ledgers for the restaurant that washed every dollar this crew ever spent. And when that was done, it was time to start on lunch.

After serving the meal, I did the dishes, laid down for a short nap, then hurried out again.

Dinner prep came right after. Repeat. Day after day.

Then somehow, in all of that, I had become invisible.
