Chapter 2

Addison Ball POV:

Life felt complete. I was pregnant. With twins.

The doctor' s words had echoed in the quiet room. "A rare and beautiful surprise, Addison." My heart swelled with a joy I hadn't known was possible.

I couldn' t wait to tell Addison. My husband.

He was on a business trip, as usual. Always busy, always flying.

I decided to surprise him. A spontaneous flight across the country.

I pictured his face. The wide smile, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners.

I snuck into his hotel suite, my suitcase rolling softly behind me. The door was ajar.

His voice reached me from the living room. Low and casual. A man' s voice.

I froze. My hand still on the doorknob.

"She's too sweet," Addison said. His words were like a casual flick, but they struck me hard. "Like chewing gum that's lost its flavor."

My breath hitched. The air suddenly felt thin.

"She's missing... that fire." He chuckled, a sound that twisted something inside me.

Brayden, his best friend, laughed back. "Yeah, your ex-wife has plenty of fire."

My stomach lurched. The joy of moments ago turned sour.

Brayden's voice was teasing. "Worn you out these last few days, has she?"

Addison Parker smirked. I could hear it in his tone, hear the arrogance.

"Her?" he scoffed. "She just uses me like a free vibrator."

A wave of nausea hit me. Harder than any morning sickness.

My body rebelled. My head spun.

The hotel room, once a symbol of surprise and love, became a cage. The words echoed, trapping me.

My love. My beautiful, fragile love. It was a lie.

A carefully constructed performance. He was an actor, and I was his unwitting audience.

He didn't deserve my love. He didn't deserve us.

The twins fluttered inside me, a gentle reminder of a future now tainted.

The betrayal was a physical blow. It crushed me.

My perfect world shattered. Dust motes danced in the sliver of light from the opened door.

This wasn't just a bump in the road. This was the end. The absolute end.

I pressed a hand to my mouth, fighting the bitter taste rising in my throat. I couldn't breathe.

Chapter 3

Addison Ball POV:

"Are you absolutely certain, Mrs. Parker?" The doctor' s voice was gentle, almost a plea. Her eyes held a deep concern.

"Twin pregnancies are quite rare, you know. A true blessing." She paused, letting the words hang in the air.

I nodded, my throat tight. "I'm certain, Doctor." My voice was a flat, hollow whisper.

She sighed, a soft, sorrowful sound. "As you wish. We'll prepare everything."

I walked back into the penthouse, the silence echoing my inner void. Every corner, every expensive piece of furniture, screamed of his deception.

Balloons floated near the ceiling. A lavish banner proclaimed, "Happy Birthday, My Love!"

My heart felt like a shriveled prune. The irony was a cruel joke.

"Surprise!" Addison sprang from behind the couch, a wide, dazzling smile on his face. He rushed towards me.

He enveloped me in a tight hug. His arms felt heavy, suffocating.

He kissed my forehead, then my lips. It felt wrong. Dirty.

"You're back early," I managed, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

"Couldn't miss my wife's birthday, could I?" He winked, leading me to a table laden with gifts.

His hand grazed mine. That's when I saw it. A small, flesh-colored Band-Aid on his index finger.

My gaze snagged on it. A tiny flicker of suspicion, cold and sharp.

He pulled his hand back, a tad too quickly. "Broken glass," he mumbled, a dismissive wave.

But the shape of it. It wasn't a cut. It was a perfect, crescent-shaped indentation. A bite mark.

From Esmeralda. His ex-wife. The 'free vibrator.'

He gestured to a velvet box on the table. "Open it, love." His voice was smooth, confident.

I lifted the lid. A necklace lay nestled inside. Diamonds, glittering against a dark velvet cushion.

He reached for it, his fingers brushing my neck as he clasped it around me. A shiver of revulsion ran down my spine.

He adjusted my hair, his lips brushing my ear. "Beautiful, just like you." His voice was a soft murmur.

I saw it then, in the reflection of the mirror across the room. The necklace. It looked familiar.

Esmeralda had worn one just like it. A rejected gift, probably. A hand-me-down from his 'fire.'

His words, meant to be sweet, felt like venom. I wanted to tear it off.

Chapter 4

Addison Ball POV:

My stomach clenched. A sudden, violent surge of nausea overwhelmed me.

I clapped a hand to my mouth, sprinting towards the bathroom. I barely made it.

The porcelain bowl was cold against my cheek. My body convulsed, emptying itself of the meager contents.

The sharp ring of his business phone cut through the air. A harsh, irritating sound.

Addison was already on the move. "Duty calls, sweetheart!" he shouted, his voice muffled.

He didn't wait. Didn't even glance my way. He was already out the door, his footsteps fading.

He left the mug on the edge of the counter. A ceramic monstrosity, filled with scalding hot tea.

It teetered precariously. He hadn't noticed. He never noticed.

The mug fell. A slow, agonizing descent.

It crashed onto the tile floor, shattering into sharp pieces.

And the tea. The boiling hot tea splashed over my bare foot.

A searing pain erupted. White-hot, then throbbing.

I was curled on the cold floor, still reeling from the nausea, still dressed in my birthday finery.

I bit back a scream. The pain was immediate, intense.

I scrambled back, away from the broken ceramic and the scalding liquid.

Tears sprang to my eyes. Hot, angry tears that had nothing to do with the physical pain.

He didn't come back that night. The bed next to me remained cold and empty.

The burn on my foot throbbed, a constant, searing reminder.

It mirrored the ache in my chest. The deep, agonizing wound in my heart.

I lay there alone, surrounded by the silence of the vast, empty penthouse.

His absence was a gaping hole. A void that swallowed all the false promises.

The physical pain was awful, but the emotional pain was a thousand times worse.

I was alone. Utterly, completely alone.
