The Name Penciled Back In Chapter 1

My nine-year-old crossed my name off his emergency contacts and wrote his dad's girlfriend in above mine.

Twelve years I was the one at every fever, every parent-teacher night, every 2 a.m. science project glued together at the kitchen table.

Marcus was always "traveling."

The destination was one apartment, one woman, ten years younger, every single time.

Her name was Skye, and my son called her by her first name like they were buddies.

Last Christmas Marcus brought her into my house, and Eli looked right at me and said, "Mom, can you not look so miserable? Skye actually knows how to have fun."

On the school form, under reason for the change, my son had written: my mom's too sensitive, easier to just call Skye.

I didn't cry.

I signed the divorce, I packed one box, and I left twelve handwritten parenting journals stacked on his desk.

Three months later Eli went into a febrile seizure and the hospital dialed his first contact.

Skye's number was disconnected—she and Marcus had broken up a week before.

The nurse scrolled to the second contact, the one that had been crossed out and then, in small pencil, quietly written back in.

It was mine.

My phone rang at 11:47 at night, and a stranger said the words I'd been waiting twelve years to matter for.

"Are you Eli's mother?"

***

The black ink on the emergency contact form bled through the cheap school paper. My name, Renata Vance, had a thick, jagged line dragged straight through it. Above it, my ten-year-old son, Eli, had printed a single word in bold, careful letters: Skye.

I traced the edge of the paper with a damp dish towel. Beside Skye's name, Eli had filled in the tiny box for 'Reason for Change'.

'My mom is too sensitive. Calling Skye is easier.'

A hot flush crept up my neck. Twelve years. Twelve years of holding his burning forehead during midnight fevers. Gluing popsicle sticks together at two in the morning. Sitting alone in undersized chairs at every parent-teacher conference while other parents sat in pairs. All of it, erased by one careless line of ink.

My husband, Marcus, was currently on a business trip. I knew exactly where that trip was. A downtown loft, three miles away. Skye's loft. I had seen the credit card receipts. I had smelled her perfume on his coats.

I didn't make a sound.

The frantic electronic blips of a racing game echoed from the living room. Eli slouched on the sofa, mashing the buttons on the console Skye bought him last month.

"Mom," Eli called out. He didn't bother to look up from the screen. "Can you not just stand there looking miserable like last Christmas?"

The electronic tires screeched on the TV screen.

Last Christmas. Marcus had brought Skye home for dinner, calling her a vital colleague. I had stood in the kitchen, watching them laugh by the tree. Eli had snatched a controller from my hand that night. 'Give it to Skye, Mom. Skye actually knows how to play.'

He was using the exact same tone now. The same casual dismissal.

Before I could form a response, Eli's phone buzzed on the coffee table. He paused the game and swiped the screen.

"Hey, Dad," Eli said, putting the call on speaker.

Marcus's voice filled the living room, crisp and cheerful. "Hey, buddy. How's the weekend going?"

"Boring. Mom is just standing in the kitchen staring at the wall."

A soft, feminine laugh echoed through the speaker. Skye. She was right there next to him.

"Tell your mother to relax," Marcus said. The background noise sounded like a bustling cafe, not a corporate conference room. "Did you give her the school form to sign?"

"Yeah. She's holding it right now."

"Good. Make sure she signs it today. I don't want the school bothering her if you get a scrape on your knee. She worries too much."

"That's exactly what Skye said," Eli agreed, grinning at the phone. "Skye said if she was my contact, she'd just send an Uber."

"Skye is a very practical woman," Marcus replied smoothly. "Is she giving you a hard time about it, Eli?"

"She's just giving me that look."

I stepped out of the kitchen and walked into the living room. I stopped right behind the sofa.

"Marcus," I said.

There was a sudden, sharp silence on the other end of the line. The faint clinking of coffee cups stopped.

"Renata," Marcus said, his tone instantly dropping an octave. "I didn't know you were listening."

"You're on speakerphone."

"Right. Well, I'm just checking in on my boy between meetings."

"Meetings," I repeated. "On a Sunday afternoon."

"It's a very demanding client."

"Does the client find my son's emergency contact form interesting?"

Marcus sighed. It was a heavy, put-upon sound. "Don't start this right now, Renata. It's just a form. Eli is getting older. He doesn't need his mother hovering over every minor bump and bruise."

"So you decided your coworker should handle his medical emergencies?"

"Skye is highly capable. She offered to help out since her office is closer to the school. It's a logistical decision. Stop making it personal."

"She crossed out my name."

"Eli crossed it out," Marcus corrected. "Because we had a mature conversation about it. You should try having one."

"I am his mother."

"And I am his father. I have a say in who gets called when I'm out of town providing for this family."

"Providing." I looked at Eli. My son was glaring at me, his arms crossed over his chest, fully aligned with the voice on the phone. "Is that what you're doing right now, Marcus?"

"I have to go. The client is waiting," Marcus snapped. "Sign the form, Renata. Don't punish Eli just because you're feeling insecure."

The line went dead.

Eli threw his hands up in the air. "See? You always ruin everything. He was in a good mood until you started talking."

"I am trying to protect you," I said.

"Protect me from what? Getting an Uber? Skye treats me like an adult. You treat me like a baby."

"Skye buys you things so you'll like her."

"At least she buys me cool things. You just buy me math workbooks and organic snacks."

I walked back into the kitchen. I picked up the form from the counter. I folded it in half. Then in quarters. The crisp paper dug into my palm. I slid it deep into the pocket of my apron.

My knuckles pressed hard against the cold granite edge of the island. The stone bit into my skin. I held the pressure there until the sting grounded me. Twelve years of devotion, reduced to an annoyance.

"Did you pack your gym clothes for tomorrow?" I asked, forcing my voice to stay level.

"Skye ordered me new ones online. They arrive tomorrow," Eli muttered, turning his back on me and grabbing his controller.

"I'm going to tidy your desk," I said.

"Whatever. Just don't throw away my sketches again."

I walked down the hall and pushed open his bedroom door. Posters of sports cars lined the walls. Clothes spilled out of his hamper. I stepped over a pile of dirty socks and approached his wooden desk.

I pulled the folded paper from my apron. I reached for the bottom drawer, intending to bury the form under his old notebooks. I couldn't look at it anymore.

The drawer stuck. I yanked the metal handle. It slid open with a harsh scrape.

I froze.

The form slipped from my fingers and fluttered to the carpet.

Stuffed into the very back of the drawer, hidden beneath discarded binders and broken pencils, was a stack of familiar, cloth-bound books.

My parenting journals.

I had kept them on the top shelf of the living room bookcase. I wrote in them every week since the day I brought Eli home from the hospital. Every milestone, every fever, every quiet moment.

Someone had pulled them from the shelf and shoved them into the dark, dusty bottom of a desk drawer.

I reached in and pulled out the top journal.

The navy blue fabric felt rough against my thumb.

Right across the center of the cover, a harsh, jagged crease warped the heavy cardboard.

It was a new fold.

I hadn't made it.
