The Mafia's Contract Wife Chapter 1

A storm lashed against the bulletproof glass windows of the penthouse suite at Callahan Tower, one of the most prestigious skyscrapers in downtown Chicago. Lightning split the night sky, its flash reflecting off the sharp jawline of a man standing with his back to the room.

Victor Callahan gazed down, observing the flickering lights of a metropolis that seemed to bow beneath his feet. At twentyeight years old, Victor was the true embodiment of absolute power. The public knew him as a young billionaire, the genius CEO behind Callahan Enterprises-a business titan dominating global logistics, luxury real estate, and worldclass cybersecurity.

But that was merely the polished mask he showed the world.

Beneath the bespoke suit draped over his athletic frame, Victor was the supreme leader of The Valerius Ring, the most feared and lethal mafia syndicate in North America. The giant cargo ships owned by Callahan Logistics didn't just carry electronics or luxury cars; they moved millions of dollars worth of highcaliber illegal weaponry distributed to various dark factions. His security firm hacked the data of corrupt politicians, while his private Chicago docks served as the primary pipeline for gold smuggling and money laundering, all off the government's radar.

He was the king of two worlds. The world of light and the underworld. And Victor ruled both with an iron fist.

"Mr. Callahan."

A calm, baritone voice broke the room's silence. Liam, Victor's righthand man and the chief executioner of The Valerius Ring, stood tall near Victor's mahogany desk. Liam's black suit was slightly damp at the shoulders, carrying the faint scent of rain and the coppery tang of blood.

Victor did not turn. His hand, adorned with a silver ring bearing the Valerius crossedswords insignia, was tucked casually into his trouser pocket. "Your report, Liam."

"The cleanup at the north port is complete," Liam reported flatly. "The parties who tried to sabotage our shipment of automatic weapons last week have been dealt with. As you ordered, their bodies will never be found. We sank them to the bottom of Lake Michigan with concrete weights."

"Good," Victor hissed coldly, his voice more lethal than the storm outside. "Make sure the other rats in the syndicate hear the news. I do not tolerate betrayal in any form. Not for a single bullet."

Just as Liam bowed in respect, the executive suite's double doors were shoved open violently. No knock. Only the rhythmic, menacing thud of a silvertipped wooden cane against the black marble floor.

There was only one person in all of Chicago who dared enter Victor's room without permission.

Lorenzo Callahan.

The middleaged man stepped inside, radiating an aura of intimidation that hadn't faded with age. The former Don of The Valerius Ring still had eyes as sharp as a switchblade, his weatherbeaten face a silent witness to the bloody history of the Callahan family.

"Leave us, Liam," Lorenzo commanded, his voice raspy yet heavy.

Liam glanced at Victor, seeking silent approval. Victor gave a faint, almost imperceptible nod. Once the door clicked shut, leaving father and son in the soundproofed room, Lorenzo broke the tension.

"I didn't slog through Chicago traffic in this godforsaken storm just to watch you stare at the glass, Victor," Lorenzo jabbed sharply. He threw his body onto the leather sofa in the center of the room, crossing his legs arrogantly.

Victor finally turned. His eyes, as dark as the night, stared at his father without emotion. He walked slowly, pouring two fingers of singlemalt whiskey into a crystal glass before leaning his hip against the edge of his desk.

"What do you want, Father? If this is about our underground casino expansion in Las Vegas, I've already closed the deal. Or the arms supply to the border? Everything is running without a hitch."

"To hell with casinos and firearms," Lorenzo cut in harshly, his silver cane striking the floor again. "This is about the survival of The Valerius Ring. This is about your throne, Victor!"

Victor's brows knitted slightly. He sipped his whiskey slowly. "My throne has never been more secure. There isn't a cartel or faction in this country that dares to breathe louder than I permit."

"Not a threat from the outside! But from within!" Lorenzo hissed, his eyes locked onto his son's. "You've been married to Vanessa for two years. Two years, Victor! And to this second, that woman's stomach is still flat. Where is the heir I was promised to the Syndicate Elders?!"

Victor's jaw tightened, the muscles in his neck straining. His marriage to Vanessa was purely for business, an alliance that solidified his corporate position early in his tenure. There was no love. Only a cold, marital duty that, unfortunately, had yet to yield results.

"Children cannot be created overnight. Vanessa probably just needs time-"

"Don't make excuses for your wife, who cares more about French designer gowns and her ridiculous charity galas than the future of this family!" Lorenzo bellowed, his voice drowning out the thunder outside. "Listen well. The underworld doesn't just need a brilliant and ruthless leader. They need certainty. Without a bloodline, without a legitimate heir, your position is viewed as flawed. Weak."

The crystal glass in Victor's hand creaked under his iron grip. "No one thinks I am weak."

"Julian thinks you are weak."

At the mention of that name, the temperature in the room seemed to plummet. Julian Callahan. Victor's halfbrother. Lorenzo's illegitimate son by a mistress who now lived as the lady of the old Callahan estate. Julian was a cunning viper, always eyeing the top chair, both in the legal company and the syndicate.

"Julian is just a lapdog who never stops barking. If he dares to approach my chair, I will slit his throat with my own hands," Victor threatened, his voice thick with murderous intent.

"You cannot touch him without reason, Victor. Some of the Syndicate Elders have begun supporting him secretly behind my back. Why? Because Julian is fertile. He has several children from his women," Lorenzo said with emphasis. "And you? The master of The Valerius Ring, unable to produce a single legitimate successor."

Lorenzo stood up. He walked toward his son, staring straight into Victor's dark eyes with an absolute ultimatum.

"I am giving you a deadline: one year."

Victor froze. "What do you mean?"

"One year from now, I expect to see a baby boy in your wife's arms. A legitimate heir to the Callahan bloodline who will inherit this entire empire," Lorenzo stated firmly. "If in twelve months you fail, I will call the meeting of the Elders myself. I will depose you and hand the ring of the Valerius leadership to Julian."

Silence crept in, suffocating the room. Victor felt his blood boil. Handing over the bloodsoaked empire he had built, the weapon routes he commanded, and his absolute power to a conniving bastard like Julian? He would rather burn the city of Chicago to the ground.

"Your time is ticking, Victor," Lorenzo finished. The old man turned and walked out of the room without waiting for a rebuttal.

The door clicked shut, leaving a deafening silence in its wake.

Victor slammed his whiskey glass down hard. His breath was ragged, rage churning in his chest. Yet, beneath the anger, Victor's memory suddenly shifted to his recent behavior with Vanessa.

A suspicion had been creeping into his mind for the last few months. Vanessa's demeanor had changed drastically. She always found excuses to avoid him whenever Victor wanted to be intimate-complaining of headaches, exhaustion from managing her charity foundation, or intentionally going to bed early. Their time in the bedroom had become incredibly rare, as if Vanessa were deliberately erecting a thick wall between them.

Was there something his wife was planning behind his back? Why had she become so cold and evasive?

Victor reached for the private phone in his suit pocket and dialed the number of one of his trusted assistants who specialized in internal intelligence.

"Carter," Victor called out the moment the call connected, his voice low and dangerous. "I have a special task for you."

"Yes, Mr. Callahan. What can I do for you?"

"Investigate Vanessa. Monitor her every move-where she goes, who she meets, and what she does when I am not at the mansion. I want a detailed report immediately."

"Understood, sir. I'm moving out now."

Victor hung up. His eyes narrowed sharply, piercing the darkness of Chicago beyond the window. If there was a rat trying to play with fire inside his own house, he swore he would extinguish it without a trace. Victor's footsteps echoed steadily as he left the room, ready to head to the mansion to demand answers for his escalating suspicions
