Chapter 3

Maya didn't sleep.

Not even for a second.

She tried. She showered. She changed into dry clothes. She curled under her blanket and told herself it was just a strange night, that she'd met a man who was hurt and confused and-

And turned from a wolf into a man.

Her brain refused to make sense of it.

Her heart refused to calm.

Her skin still tingled where he touched her.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him standing in the rain.

Bleeding.

Powerful.

Desperate.

And those eyes-silver, piercing-

as if she was the first warm thing he'd touched in years.

She rolled over and groaned into her pillow.

"This is insane..."

But then she felt it again-

a faint warmth pulsing low in her stomach.

A tug.

Gentle but persistent.

Like something was calling her.

Pulling her.

Bond.

The whisper wasn't hers.

It wasn't even a voice.

It was a feeling inside her chest, soft and ancient.

"No," Maya whispered into the darkness. "No, no, no, I can't feel that. I'm human. I'm normal. I don't-"

A sudden knock shattered the silence.

Three sharp raps.

She shot upright, heart leaping painfully.

No one should be at her door at 3AM.

Her breath caught.

Aiden?

The air shifted.

Her pulse thudded.

Her instincts whispered yes, even before she moved.

Barefoot and trembling, she approached the door.

Her hand hesitated over the lock.

"Maya."

His voice-deep, smooth, dark-slid through the door like a warm shadow.

Her knees almost gave out.

She opened the door.

And there he was.

Aiden stood on her porch, shirtless, skin still marked with healing wounds, rain dripping from his hair. The porch light cast shadows across his chest, highlighting every sharp line of muscle.

He looked dangerous.

He looked exhausted.

He looked like he'd run straight through the night to get to her.

"Aiden..." she breathed.

He didn't step inside.

Didn't touch her.

He just stared at her with an expression she didn't have a name for.

"You felt it, didn't you?" he asked softly.

She swallowed. "Felt... what?"

"The pull."

His voice roughened.

"Your heart reaching for mine."

Her breath hitched.

"I don't understand this," she whispered. "I don't understand you."

"I know." Aiden's jaw flexed. "And I'm trying to give you space. But staying away from you is-"

He exhaled sharply and looked away, as if fighting something inside himself.

"It's hurting my wolf."

A cold shiver danced down her back.

"You're still injured," she said, noticing the angry cuts along his ribs. "You need a hospital."

"No."

His tone was sharp, instinctive.

"Maya... hospitals aren't built to handle what I am."

He stepped inside her small living room, careful-always careful-to give her room to back away.

She didn't.

The air between them thickened.

"I don't know how to handle this," Maya whispered. "I'm... just me."

Aiden's eyes softened in a way she'd never seen from a man like him.

"Just you," he murmured, stepping closer, "is more than enough."

Heat flooded her cheeks.

She hated the way her heart responded.

He looked around the room, eyes alert, scanning the corners, the windows, the shadows.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"Checking if anyone followed me."

Her stomach twisted. "Followed you?"

Aiden's expression darkened.

"The rogues who attacked me weren't acting alone. And if they discover I have a mate-"

He stopped.

"Maya, your life changes now. Whether you want it to or not."

Fear stung her chest.

Not because of him-

but because of the truth in his voice.

"What do you mean?" she whispered.

He met her eyes slowly.

"You're no longer just a nurse. You're tied to the Alpha of the strongest pack within a hundred miles."

His tone dropped lower. Darker.

"And that makes you a target."

"What kind of target?" she breathed.

"The kind that doesn't get warnings."

Her pulse hammered. "Aiden, I don't want this."

He stepped closer, stopping an inch from her, as if an invisible line held him back.

"I know," he whispered.

"And the Moon Goddess doesn't care."

Her breath caught.

"Maya..."

His voice nearly broke.

"I'm trying to give you time. But I can feel your fear. And I can feel your heart beating like you're fighting something."

"I am fighting something," she said, chest tight.

"What?"

"You," she whispered.

Silence fell between them-heavy, electric.

Aiden closed his eyes briefly, pained. When he opened them, they glowed faintly gold.

"I'll never hurt you," he said. "But I can't lie to you. My wolf already sees you as his."

"And if I don't want that?" she asked, even though her voice wavered.

Aiden swallowed hard.

"Then I'll stay away," he said, voice barely steady. "Even if it kills me."

Her heart twisted.

"Why come here?" she whispered. "Why now?"

He hesitated.

Then, with a voice that sounded like confession and surrender all at once:

"Because I felt danger approaching."

She froze.

"What danger?"

Aiden stepped closer, finally closing the distance, his warmth brushing her skin.

"There's someone outside."

Her blood ran cold.

"What? Where-"

"Don't move," he breathed, slipping between her and the door, every muscle in his body tightening, eyes shifting gold.

His voice dropped into something lethal.

"They found us."

Chapter 4

Aiden's entire body changed.

One moment he was a man with strained breath and soft eyes...

the next, he was a weapon.

Muscles coiled.

Shoulders tense.

Every sense sharpened.

Gold bled into his silver irises, glowing like embers. His nostrils flared, and a low sound-almost a growl-rumbled from deep in his chest.

Maya froze behind him.

She didn't need to understand the supernatural world to know one thing:

Something was outside.

And it wanted her.

"Aiden..." she whispered, voice trembling.

"Stay behind me," he said, low and deadly.

Her fingers curled into his back without thinking. He stiffened for a moment-almost startled-then he relaxed, as if the contact steadied him.

Thunder cracked.

Wind howled.

Then-

A shadow moved across her window.

A fast, blur-like movement that made Maya's stomach drop.

Her voice shook. "Is that a-"

"Yes," Aiden said darkly. "Rogue."

Another growl, closer this time, reverberated from outside. Maya flinched, clutching Aiden harder.

He covered her hand with his, squeezing gently.

"I won't let anything touch you," he murmured. "Not while I'm breathing."

A warm shiver shot down her spine.

Her heart thumped painfully.

Suddenly, something slammed against her front door-

a body, full force.

Maya screamed.

Aiden didn't even blink.

Instead, he stepped forward, slipping her behind him with a smooth, protective motion like it was instinct-like she belonged there.

"Get back," he warned the creature outside, voice turning into a dangerous snarl. "You have three seconds."

The rogue wolf snarled back from the other side of the door.

Before Maya could even blink, Aiden shoved his palm into the door, bracing it as claws scraped violently against the wood.

Her breath hitched.

"Aiden... they're trying to get in-"

"I know." His voice was calm-too calm. "They won't."

"How can you be so sure?"

He looked back at her over his shoulder, expression a mix of confidence and something darkly protective.

"Because I'm between you and them."

A beat.

"That's all the guarantee you'll ever need."

Heat rushed through her chest, mixing with fear, confusion, and a strange, overwhelming trust she shouldn't feel.

Another slam hit the door. Harder.

Aiden's jaw twitched. "They're testing me."

"Testing you how?" Maya whispered.

Aiden's eyes glowed brighter. "Testing my strength. Testing your scent."

"S–scent?"

"You smell like you touched me."

His voice dropped to something sinful, intimate, primal.

"Like me."

Her breath stopped.

"They want to see if I'll give you up," he said. "They want to know how far an Alpha will go for his mate."

Maya's heart slammed against her ribs.

"Aiden, I'm not your-"

"You are," he said quietly. "Whether you accept it or not."

The door rattled again, and Aiden snarled-

an inhuman, terrifying sound that vibrated the air.

Maya stepped back, startled by the sheer power radiating from him.

His bones cracked-

a shift fighting beneath his skin.

Not fully transforming, but close.

He was holding himself back for her.

"Aiden-are you okay?"

His breathing was ragged. "My wolf wants out."

"Is that... dangerous?"

"For them," he said simply.

Suddenly-

silence.

The wolves outside stopped scratching.

Aiden went perfectly still, head tilting slightly-listening.

"What?" Maya whispered.

"They're waiting," he murmured.

"For what?"

Aiden's expression darkened.

"For the second wolf coming toward your house."

Maya's blood ran cold. "There are more?"

"Yes," he said. "And this one... isn't rogue."

Lightning illuminated his face.

He looked lethal.

"Who is it?" she whispered.

Aiden's voice became a low growl.

"Lucian."

The name tasted like poison on his tongue.

"Lucian?" Maya repeated.

"He's the Alpha who wants my territory."

Aiden's fingers curled into fists.

"And now he wants you."

Maya's heart slammed painfully.

"Me? Why?!"

Aiden turned to her fully, gripping her shoulders with both hands, eyes fierce.

"Because taking a mate-especially a Luna-breaks an Alpha. He thinks if he steals you..."

His voice grew lower, strained.

"He'll destroy me."

Maya's stomach twisted. "Aiden... I can't do this. I'm not ready for-"

"Look at me," he whispered.

She forced herself to meet his eyes.

He cupped her face gently-such contrast to the violence around them.

"You don't have to be ready," he said. "You just have to trust me."

"I barely know you," she whispered.

His thumb brushed her cheek softly. "Your soul knows mine."

Her breath caught.

Suddenly-

a knock.

Soft.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Different from the violent attacks before.

Aiden's entire body locked.

"That's him," he whispered. "Lucian."

Maya's blood froze.

"Aiden... what do we do?"

His eyes met hers-dark, furious, protective, terrified of losing her.

"Stay behind me," he said.

Her voice shook. "And you?"

A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips-like a man who had already decided violence.

"I'm going to show him," Aiden whispered, "that coming after my mate was the worst mistake he ever made."

Chapter 5

The knock echoed again.

Slow.

Taunting.

Confident.

Aiden's body went rigid with a fury Maya could almost feel radiating from him like heat. His wolf was pushing against his skin, begging to be released.

Maya clutched his arm. "Aiden... don't open it."

He didn't look at her, but his fingers covered hers, squeezing-an unspoken promise.

"I won't let him touch you," he murmured.

Another knock.

This one sharper.

Aiden pulled her gently behind him and stepped toward the door.

Maya's heart pounded so hard she felt dizzy. She grabbed the back of his shirt without realizing it. Aiden froze for a second-softening-before his jaw tightened again.

"Lucian," Aiden called, voice low and lethal, "take one step inside this house and I'll rip your heart out."

A smooth, dark laugh drifted through the door.

"Well, well," the stranger drawled. "You must truly value this human if you're throwing threats so early."

Maya's stomach twisted.

She didn't know Lucian's face, but his voice... she would never forget it.

Men like him didn't need to be seen to be terrifying.

You could feel them.

Aiden's breathing deepened.

"Leave," he growled.

"You know I can't," Lucian replied calmly. "You've finally shown a weakness, Aiden. I came to see it for myself."

Aiden's muscles twitched violently.

He wanted to shift.

He wanted blood.

Maya tugged his shirt again. "Please don't open the door."

Aiden turned his head slightly. Not fully-just enough for her to feel his gaze settle on her.

"Maya," he whispered, gentle despite the storm inside him, "I need you to stay back. No matter what happens."

Her throat tightened.

"I don't want you to get hurt."

He let out a breath that wasn't quite human.

"Too late for that."

Another knock-harder this time-made the walls tremble.

Aiden snapped.

He grabbed the door handle, yanked it open-

-and the world changed in an instant.

Rain poured down like a curtain.

Cold wind blasted into the house.

And standing just outside the door was a man who didn't look like he belonged to earth at all.

Tall.

Sharp jaw.

Black hair slicked by rain.

Eyes pale as ice-unsettling, cruel.

Lucian Grey.

He smiled slowly when he saw Maya.

"So this is her," he murmured, voice silky and poisonous. "The little human."

Aiden moved so fast Maya didn't even see it.

One moment he was beside her-

the next, he was in front of Lucian, blocking his view completely.

"If you look at her again," Aiden growled, "I will tear your eyes from your skull."

Lucian laughed softly. "Such devotion. How touching."

Maya felt herself shaking.

Lucian's gaze slid around Aiden for a split second-just long enough to catch her eyes.

She froze.

His eyes weren't normal.

They weren't wolf.

They weren't human.

They were... hungry.

Aiden roared-actual roar-stepping closer, chest heaving.

Lucian lifted a brow. "Protective. Predictable. And foolish."

"Leave," Aiden snarled. "Before I forget the rules."

Lucian smirked. "You forget them every time you breathe."

They stared at each other, tension crackling like static, two Alphas inches from tearing the world apart.

Then Lucian's gaze shifted again-not to Maya this time, but to Aiden's chest, where dried blood still streaked his skin.

"You're injured," Lucian noted. "Weak."

A slow smile. "Easy to break."

Aiden lunged.

Maya gasped, stepping forward, panic slamming through her ribs.

Aiden's fist collided with Lucian's jaw-

Lucian staggered back with a laugh, wiping blood from his lip.

"Good," Lucian said softly. "I hoped you'd fight."

Aiden's wolf surged. Bones cracked. His shoulders broadened, muscles tearing and reforming. Not a full shift-just enough to make him monstrous.

Maya's breath caught.

She should've been terrified.

Instead... she felt something else.

Connected.

Bound.

As if her heartbeat had synced with his.

Lucian noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

"Ah," he murmured. "She feels it too."

Aiden roared and launched forward again.

Lucian dodged easily, almost amused.

"Temper, temper," he said, stepping just out of reach. "You should worry less about me and more about the others who are watching."

Maya stiffened.

Others?

Aiden froze for half a second-just long enough for Lucian to step back toward the dark forest.

"Oh, yes," Lucian said cheerfully. "You didn't think I came alone, did you?"

Aiden's chest rose and fell rapidly. "If you touch her-"

"I won't," Lucian said with an easy shrug. "Tonight is not for killing."

He smiled wickedly.

"It's for warning."

He began to walk backward, his silhouette fading into the night.

"This is only the beginning, Alpha. The moon has shifted. Fate is no longer on your side."

Aiden took a step after him-

"Aiden," Maya whispered, barely breathing, "don't go. Please."

He stopped instantly.

Lucian's smile widened. "Ah. So she is your weakness."

Aiden's jaw clenched so hard Maya thought his teeth might crack.

Lucian disappeared into the darkness.

Wind swirled.

The forest swallowed him whole.

Then silence.

Aiden shut the door slowly.

When he turned around, Maya saw it-

the turbulent fear beneath his fury.

He walked toward her slowly, chest heaving, eyes fading from gold back to silver.

"Maya..." His voice cracked-raw, vulnerable. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, throat tight. "Are you?"

He tried to speak, but emotion clawed at his voice. He lifted a trembling hand and cupped her cheek gently.

"You called me back," he whispered. "You stopped me from chasing him."

"I didn't want you to die," she murmured. "Does that make me stupid?"

Aiden shook his head slowly.

"No," he breathed.

"It makes you mine."

Her breath caught.

His forehead pressed to hers.

His body shaking from adrenaline... and something deeper.

"You're safer with me," he whispered.

"But tonight proved something."

She swallowed. "What?"

Aiden met her eyes, something dark and determined igniting in him.

"I can't leave you here anymore."

Her pulse stilled.

"Maya... you're coming with me."
