Chapter 2

For a long moment, Maya couldn't move.

Couldn't breathe.

Couldn't even think.

The storm raged around them, lightning cracking open the sky, but the world felt silent-

as if everything held still, watching them.

Aiden.

Alpha.

Luna.

Words she shouldn't understand... yet somehow did.

He took another slow step toward her, and Maya felt her pulse pound in her neck. He moved like someone used to being obeyed-commanding, unhurried, dangerous.

"I asked you a question," Maya whispered, forcing her voice to steady. "Why are you here? Why-why me?"

Aiden stopped.

He tilted his head slightly, studying her the way a predator studies the one thing it has chosen not to kill.

There was something tortured in his eyes.

Something restrained.

Something aching.

"I don't know," he said quietly. "But the moment you touched me... the bond snapped into place."

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It does to me." His voice lowered, dark and raw. "I felt pain for years. Silence. Nothingness. Then you touched me, and for the first time in my life... I wasn't alone in my own head."

Her heartbeat thudded painfully.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

Aiden blinked slowly, rain dripping down his lashes.

"My wolf refused to speak to me," he murmured. "He shut me out. For years."

A beat.

"Until you."

Maya's breath hitched.

He looked broken.

Strong, powerful, terrifying-

yet broken.

And something inside her softened before she could stop it.

"Aiden," she whispered, not sure what she was trying to say.

He inhaled sharply at the sound of his name in her voice. Like it did something to him. Like she did something to him.

He took another step toward her.

Maya instinctively stepped back.

His jaw tightened.

"Don't," he said softly. "Please don't move away from me."

Please.

A word she didn't expect from a man like him.

But fear made her hands shake.

Not fear of him hurting her-

fear of what he made her feel.

"I don't know you," she said, voice cracking. "I don't know what any of this means."

Aiden's expression twisted with something like regret.

"You will," he said.

"And I won't hurt you. But staying near you... it's the only thing keeping my wolf calm."

She swallowed hard.

The rain eased into a heavy drizzle.

The darkness wrapped around them like a living thing.

"Why were you injured?" she asked.

Aiden's eyes flickered with something dark.

"I was ambushed."

His voice turned colder, sharper.

"Rogues. Sent by someone who wants war."

"War?" Maya whispered.

"Someone who would kill you if they knew what you are to me."

Her stomach dropped.

"Me? Why-"

"Because you're my mate," he said quietly. "And a Luna is an Alpha's greatest strength... or weakness."

A shiver slid down her spine.

Bond. Mate. Luna. Strength. Weakness.

This was too much. Too fast.

"I'm just a nurse," she whispered. "I'm not- whatever you think I am."

Aiden stepped closer, and this time she didn't move.

"You don't feel it?" he asked softly.

"What?"

"This."

He lifted his hand slowly, giving her time to pull away.

She didn't.

His fingertips brushed her cheek.

Heat shot down her spine.

A gasp escaped her lips.

His touch was gentle-unbelievably gentle for a man who carried violence in every breath.

"That pull," he whispered. "That fire under your skin. That instinct telling you I'd die for you."

Her knees went weak.

Because she felt it.

She didn't want to.

But God, she felt it.

Aiden dropped his hand and exhaled shakily, as if touching her had cost him something.

"You saved me tonight," he said. "That puts you in danger."

Maya frowned. "Danger from who?"

He stepped so close the warmth of his body wrapped around her like a shield.

"From the wolves who want to strip me of everything," he murmured. "And a human Luna? You're a prize they will try to take."

Her breath stilled.

He looked down at her with a quiet, frightening intensity.

"I won't let them."

His voice deepened.

"I don't care what it costs. I will protect you."

She swallowed, trying to steady her voice.

"What... what do you want from me, Aiden?"

Emotion flickered in his eyes-

anger

fear

longing

and something heartbreakingly vulnerable.

"Everything," he whispered.

The air left her lungs.

Aiden stepped back only when headlights flashed in the distance-another car approaching. His eyes flickered to gold for a moment, instinctive, territorial.

"Someone's coming," he said. "You need to get inside."

Maya hesitated.

She didn't want to admit it-

but the thought of him leaving carved a hollow ache in her chest.

He noticed.

His voice softened. "I'll come back for you."

"When?" she whispered.

"When the moon tells me I can," he said.

"And when it's safe for you."

He stepped back into the shadows, and for a moment she thought he might disappear as suddenly as he'd appeared.

But he paused.

Looked at her one last time.

"Maya," he said softly.

Her name sounded like a vow.

"You're not alone anymore."

Then he vanished into the darkness, leaving her standing in the rain, heart pounding with fear... and something dangerously close to desire.

Chapter 3

Maya didn't sleep.

Not even for a second.

She tried. She showered. She changed into dry clothes. She curled under her blanket and told herself it was just a strange night, that she'd met a man who was hurt and confused and-

And turned from a wolf into a man.

Her brain refused to make sense of it.

Her heart refused to calm.

Her skin still tingled where he touched her.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him standing in the rain.

Bleeding.

Powerful.

Desperate.

And those eyes-silver, piercing-

as if she was the first warm thing he'd touched in years.

She rolled over and groaned into her pillow.

"This is insane..."

But then she felt it again-

a faint warmth pulsing low in her stomach.

A tug.

Gentle but persistent.

Like something was calling her.

Pulling her.

Bond.

The whisper wasn't hers.

It wasn't even a voice.

It was a feeling inside her chest, soft and ancient.

"No," Maya whispered into the darkness. "No, no, no, I can't feel that. I'm human. I'm normal. I don't-"

A sudden knock shattered the silence.

Three sharp raps.

She shot upright, heart leaping painfully.

No one should be at her door at 3AM.

Her breath caught.

Aiden?

The air shifted.

Her pulse thudded.

Her instincts whispered yes, even before she moved.

Barefoot and trembling, she approached the door.

Her hand hesitated over the lock.

"Maya."

His voice-deep, smooth, dark-slid through the door like a warm shadow.

Her knees almost gave out.

She opened the door.

And there he was.

Aiden stood on her porch, shirtless, skin still marked with healing wounds, rain dripping from his hair. The porch light cast shadows across his chest, highlighting every sharp line of muscle.

He looked dangerous.

He looked exhausted.

He looked like he'd run straight through the night to get to her.

"Aiden..." she breathed.

He didn't step inside.

Didn't touch her.

He just stared at her with an expression she didn't have a name for.

"You felt it, didn't you?" he asked softly.

She swallowed. "Felt... what?"

"The pull."

His voice roughened.

"Your heart reaching for mine."

Her breath hitched.

"I don't understand this," she whispered. "I don't understand you."

"I know." Aiden's jaw flexed. "And I'm trying to give you space. But staying away from you is-"

He exhaled sharply and looked away, as if fighting something inside himself.

"It's hurting my wolf."

A cold shiver danced down her back.

"You're still injured," she said, noticing the angry cuts along his ribs. "You need a hospital."

"No."

His tone was sharp, instinctive.

"Maya... hospitals aren't built to handle what I am."

He stepped inside her small living room, careful-always careful-to give her room to back away.

She didn't.

The air between them thickened.

"I don't know how to handle this," Maya whispered. "I'm... just me."

Aiden's eyes softened in a way she'd never seen from a man like him.

"Just you," he murmured, stepping closer, "is more than enough."

Heat flooded her cheeks.

She hated the way her heart responded.

He looked around the room, eyes alert, scanning the corners, the windows, the shadows.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"Checking if anyone followed me."

Her stomach twisted. "Followed you?"

Aiden's expression darkened.

"The rogues who attacked me weren't acting alone. And if they discover I have a mate-"

He stopped.

"Maya, your life changes now. Whether you want it to or not."

Fear stung her chest.

Not because of him-

but because of the truth in his voice.

"What do you mean?" she whispered.

He met her eyes slowly.

"You're no longer just a nurse. You're tied to the Alpha of the strongest pack within a hundred miles."

His tone dropped lower. Darker.

"And that makes you a target."

"What kind of target?" she breathed.

"The kind that doesn't get warnings."

Her pulse hammered. "Aiden, I don't want this."

He stepped closer, stopping an inch from her, as if an invisible line held him back.

"I know," he whispered.

"And the Moon Goddess doesn't care."

Her breath caught.

"Maya..."

His voice nearly broke.

"I'm trying to give you time. But I can feel your fear. And I can feel your heart beating like you're fighting something."

"I am fighting something," she said, chest tight.

"What?"

"You," she whispered.

Silence fell between them-heavy, electric.

Aiden closed his eyes briefly, pained. When he opened them, they glowed faintly gold.

"I'll never hurt you," he said. "But I can't lie to you. My wolf already sees you as his."

"And if I don't want that?" she asked, even though her voice wavered.

Aiden swallowed hard.

"Then I'll stay away," he said, voice barely steady. "Even if it kills me."

Her heart twisted.

"Why come here?" she whispered. "Why now?"

He hesitated.

Then, with a voice that sounded like confession and surrender all at once:

"Because I felt danger approaching."

She froze.

"What danger?"

Aiden stepped closer, finally closing the distance, his warmth brushing her skin.

"There's someone outside."

Her blood ran cold.

"What? Where-"

"Don't move," he breathed, slipping between her and the door, every muscle in his body tightening, eyes shifting gold.

His voice dropped into something lethal.

"They found us."

Chapter 4

Aiden's entire body changed.

One moment he was a man with strained breath and soft eyes...

the next, he was a weapon.

Muscles coiled.

Shoulders tense.

Every sense sharpened.

Gold bled into his silver irises, glowing like embers. His nostrils flared, and a low sound-almost a growl-rumbled from deep in his chest.

Maya froze behind him.

She didn't need to understand the supernatural world to know one thing:

Something was outside.

And it wanted her.

"Aiden..." she whispered, voice trembling.

"Stay behind me," he said, low and deadly.

Her fingers curled into his back without thinking. He stiffened for a moment-almost startled-then he relaxed, as if the contact steadied him.

Thunder cracked.

Wind howled.

Then-

A shadow moved across her window.

A fast, blur-like movement that made Maya's stomach drop.

Her voice shook. "Is that a-"

"Yes," Aiden said darkly. "Rogue."

Another growl, closer this time, reverberated from outside. Maya flinched, clutching Aiden harder.

He covered her hand with his, squeezing gently.

"I won't let anything touch you," he murmured. "Not while I'm breathing."

A warm shiver shot down her spine.

Her heart thumped painfully.

Suddenly, something slammed against her front door-

a body, full force.

Maya screamed.

Aiden didn't even blink.

Instead, he stepped forward, slipping her behind him with a smooth, protective motion like it was instinct-like she belonged there.

"Get back," he warned the creature outside, voice turning into a dangerous snarl. "You have three seconds."

The rogue wolf snarled back from the other side of the door.

Before Maya could even blink, Aiden shoved his palm into the door, bracing it as claws scraped violently against the wood.

Her breath hitched.

"Aiden... they're trying to get in-"

"I know." His voice was calm-too calm. "They won't."

"How can you be so sure?"

He looked back at her over his shoulder, expression a mix of confidence and something darkly protective.

"Because I'm between you and them."

A beat.

"That's all the guarantee you'll ever need."

Heat rushed through her chest, mixing with fear, confusion, and a strange, overwhelming trust she shouldn't feel.

Another slam hit the door. Harder.

Aiden's jaw twitched. "They're testing me."

"Testing you how?" Maya whispered.

Aiden's eyes glowed brighter. "Testing my strength. Testing your scent."

"S–scent?"

"You smell like you touched me."

His voice dropped to something sinful, intimate, primal.

"Like me."

Her breath stopped.

"They want to see if I'll give you up," he said. "They want to know how far an Alpha will go for his mate."

Maya's heart slammed against her ribs.

"Aiden, I'm not your-"

"You are," he said quietly. "Whether you accept it or not."

The door rattled again, and Aiden snarled-

an inhuman, terrifying sound that vibrated the air.

Maya stepped back, startled by the sheer power radiating from him.

His bones cracked-

a shift fighting beneath his skin.

Not fully transforming, but close.

He was holding himself back for her.

"Aiden-are you okay?"

His breathing was ragged. "My wolf wants out."

"Is that... dangerous?"

"For them," he said simply.

Suddenly-

silence.

The wolves outside stopped scratching.

Aiden went perfectly still, head tilting slightly-listening.

"What?" Maya whispered.

"They're waiting," he murmured.

"For what?"

Aiden's expression darkened.

"For the second wolf coming toward your house."

Maya's blood ran cold. "There are more?"

"Yes," he said. "And this one... isn't rogue."

Lightning illuminated his face.

He looked lethal.

"Who is it?" she whispered.

Aiden's voice became a low growl.

"Lucian."

The name tasted like poison on his tongue.

"Lucian?" Maya repeated.

"He's the Alpha who wants my territory."

Aiden's fingers curled into fists.

"And now he wants you."

Maya's heart slammed painfully.

"Me? Why?!"

Aiden turned to her fully, gripping her shoulders with both hands, eyes fierce.

"Because taking a mate-especially a Luna-breaks an Alpha. He thinks if he steals you..."

His voice grew lower, strained.

"He'll destroy me."

Maya's stomach twisted. "Aiden... I can't do this. I'm not ready for-"

"Look at me," he whispered.

She forced herself to meet his eyes.

He cupped her face gently-such contrast to the violence around them.

"You don't have to be ready," he said. "You just have to trust me."

"I barely know you," she whispered.

His thumb brushed her cheek softly. "Your soul knows mine."

Her breath caught.

Suddenly-

a knock.

Soft.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Different from the violent attacks before.

Aiden's entire body locked.

"That's him," he whispered. "Lucian."

Maya's blood froze.

"Aiden... what do we do?"

His eyes met hers-dark, furious, protective, terrified of losing her.

"Stay behind me," he said.

Her voice shook. "And you?"

A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips-like a man who had already decided violence.

"I'm going to show him," Aiden whispered, "that coming after my mate was the worst mistake he ever made."
