The Jilted Heiress Deals With The Devil Chapter 1

Alyssa Kirk sat in the darkest corner of the bar, a ghost in a white dress. She took a slow, deep breath, trying to command a heart that was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Her eyes cut through the dim, smoky air of Elysian's top floor, ignoring the scattered silhouettes of New York's elite. They landed, and stuck, on one man.

Ayaan Carter,Heir of the Carter Group.

He was alone in a plush booth, a king on a solitary throne. The space around him was a vacuum; no one dared approach. He held a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid catching the light as he swirled it, the ice clinking softly.

Her fingers tightened on the fabric of her dress, knuckles turning white. The memory was only hours old, but it was seared into her brain. His voice, her uncle Hank's, oozing concern through the crack of the study door.

"... once she marries her fiancé,Eddie Bradley, the Kirk Enterprises shares are secure. Then the life insurance policy kicks in. A little accident... a tragedy. It's for the best."

The words were a serpent, coiling in her gut, squeezing the air from her lungs. For the best. Her death.

She stood up. The gin and tonic on the table in front of her was untouched, its condensation beading like cold sweat. She picked it up, her hand surprisingly steady.

Each step on the thick carpet was silent, a declaration of war no one else could hear. A few heads turned, gazes flickering from her to the man in the corner, then quickly away. They knew better than to disturb the emperor in his court.

She reached the booth. The low light carved his profile from shadow-a hard jaw, a straight nose, lips set in a line of permanent indifference. He didn't look at her. The ice in his glass continued its lonely, rhythmic dance.

Alyssa placed her own glass on the table. The sound was a whisper, softer than the clink of his ice.

"Mr. Carter."

Her voice was a carefully rehearsed tremor, just fragile enough, just clear enough.

Finally, he looked up. His eyes, the color of a winter storm, held no warmth, no curiosity. They were flat, analytical, and they sliced right through her.

A cold knot formed in her stomach, but she held his gaze.

"Can I buy you a drink?" she asked. The line was clumsy, absurd.

He didn't answer. A single eyebrow arched, a minute gesture loaded with a universe of mockery. You?

Heat flooded her cheeks, a humiliating blush. She leaned in, her voice dropping, shedding the last of its pretense.

"Or, you can take me upstairs. I hear the suites at Elysian have a spectacular view."

The storm in his eyes shifted. A crack appeared in the ice, a flicker of something that might have been interest. He leaned back against the leather, his posture relaxed but radiating a predatory power that made the air thick.

He extended a long-fingered hand and began to tap a slow, deliberate rhythm on the tabletop. Tap. Tap. Tap. A countdown to her courage running out.

Meanwhile, just one wall away, the mood was celebratory. Hank Saunders, her uncle and guardian, raised his glass. "To Alyssa's future, and to the future of our family! Cheers!"

His wife, Breanna, chimed in, her smile as sharp as glass. "Yes! As soon as she and Eddie are married, the Kirk fortune is finally safe. That girl doesn't know the first thing about business. She needs us, her elders, to look after her." Her eyes darted to her own daughter, Jayleen.

Eddie , Alyssa's fiancé, stood with practiced humility. "Uncle Hank, Aunt Breanna, don't you worry. I'll take good care of Alyssa, and I'll manage the company well." His face was a mask of perfect sincerity.

"Good boy," Breanna cooed, patting his hand. "If only our Jayleen were half as sensible."

Jayleen pouted, her pink-painted nails tapping against her phone. "Mom! I'm sensible. But honestly, Alyssa is just so lucky. She does nothing and gets all that money, plus a great fiancé like Eddie." The envy in her voice was a poison she didn't bother to hide.

Hank waved a dismissive hand, bringing the discussion to a close. "Enough. After the wedding, we transfer her shares into a trust, take out a high-value life insurance policy with Eddie as the beneficiary, and it's foolproof."

A quiet, satisfied smile was shared around the table, a toast to a future built on a grave. They were oblivious, deaf to the sound of fate turning on its heel in the next room.

Back at the booth, the tapping stopped.

Ayaan stood. His shadow fell over Alyssa, swallowing her whole.

He said nothing. He simply picked up his jacket and turned toward the private elevator.

The air rushed out of Alyssa's lungs. Was that it? A rejection?

He took three steps, then paused. He glanced back over his shoulder, his gaze a silent, imperious command.

Follow.

A dizzying wave of relief washed over her. She moved, her legs feeling disconnected from her body, as if she were walking on clouds.

Step one was complete.

They entered the mirrored elevator, their reflections a stark contrast: him, tall and cold; her, small and defiant. The doors slid shut, sealing them in.

The elevator opened directly into a presidential suite that screamed of obscene wealth. Ayaan tossed his jacket onto a sofa and began unfastening his cuffs.

His voice, when he finally spoke, was a low, resonant rumble. "What do you want?"

Alyssa walked toward him, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. She summoned every last ounce of her courage and reached for the silk tie at the back of her neck.

"I want you."

The white dress pooled at her feet, leaving her standing before him in the dim light, her body slender but curved, vulnerable but unbowed.

Ayaan's gaze drifted, then snagged. It landed on the small, crimson clover-shaped birthmark just behind her ear. For a split second, the mask of indifference shattered, replaced by something deep, complex, and unreadable.

She didn't see it.

He leaned down, his breath a hot caress against her earlobe, his voice a dark promise meant only for her.

"As you wish."
