Iris watched her fiancé walk away on her wedding dress fitting day, summoned by a single call from his mistress. The Jilted Fiancée's Return To High Society Chapter 1

The rhythmic, relentless patter of the autumn rain lashed against the heavy glass doors of the Vera Wang boutique on Fifth Avenue. The droplets blurred the bustling New York street outside into a hazy, gray watercolor, casting a somber mood over the usually vibrant city.

Inside the VIP fitting room, however, the atmosphere was supposed to be one of pure joy. Iris Rollins stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirrors, her eyes fixed on the reflection of the man sitting on the plush velvet sofa behind her.

"Miss Rollins, the Chantilly lace on this piece is just exquisite, isn't it?" The voice of the clerk, Chloe, was gentle, trying to fill the heavy silence that had settled over the room. "It took three artisans in France over five hundred hours to complete by hand."

Iris barely heard her. Her attention was entirely consumed by her fiancé, Jayson Brock.

Just minutes ago, she had stepped out from behind the heavy silk curtains, wearing the first of four custom gowns. She had been nervous, her heart fluttering with the anticipation of seeing his reaction. But before Jayson could even look up from his phone to admire the cloud of white silk and lace that adorned her, his device had buzzed violently.

Despite the ambient jazz playing softly in the boutique and the sound of the rain outside, Iris had clearly heard the frantic, sweet female voice on the other end of the line.

"Jayson, it's pouring out here! I didn't bring an umbrella, and I can't get a cab anywhere. My shoes are completely ruined. What should I do?"

It was Fawn Mcdonald.

Without a single second of hesitation, Jayson had shot up from the sofa, his face etched with genuine panic. "Fawn, don't panic. Stay right there under the awning. I'm coming to get you right now!"

He had hung up the phone and turned to Iris, his expression instantly shifting from panicked concern to impatient dismissal. "Iris, just decide on the dress yourself. Something urgent came up, I have to go."

He hadn't even spared a glance at the dress. He hadn't noticed how the lace framed her collarbones or how the silk hugged her waist. He had just bolted, desperate to reach Fawn.

By the time Iris processed what had happened, the boutique door had already swung shut behind him, and she watched his sleek black car speed away into the rain, leaving her entirely alone.

She blinked, pulling herself back to reality. The radiant, expectant smile she had worn just moments ago had crumbled into a pathetic, self-mocking grimace.

She had known about Fawn for a long time. She knew Fawn was the untouchable white swan in Jayson's heart, his first love from his time studying abroad in London.

But Iris had stubbornly clung to the illusion that their impending marriage would change things. She believed that their shared childhood, the years of growing up together, would eventually outweigh a woman who had suddenly appeared in his life. She had begged and pleaded with Jayson for weeks to clear his schedule to accompany her to this fitting.

Yet, a single phone call from Fawn-over something as trivial as forgetting an umbrella-was all it took for him to abandon her on what was supposed to be one of the most important days of her life.

She should have known. Years of quiet devotion could never compete with the sudden distress of his precious white swan.

They had been engaged since they were children, a promise made by their families when the Rollins name still held weight. They had grown up side by side, officially becoming a couple when she was sixteen. Back then, she had been his priority, his center of gravity.

But when Jayson turned eighteen, he left for the UK to study. He had sworn to her that he would marry her the moment he returned. Six years passed. He came back, willing to fulfill his promise to marry her, but his heart had been left somewhere else. The warmth she once felt from him was gone, replaced by a chilling indifference, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't reignite the fire.

Iris numbly spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "Chloe, please help me take this off. I won't be trying on the others."

She felt like a clown in a circus act, performing for an empty tent.

Chloe wanted to offer some words of comfort but didn't know what to say, settling for a quiet, sympathetic sigh. In her mind, she couldn't help but curse the fiancé for being so blind as to leave such a beautiful bride behind.

As soon as the dress was packed away and Iris was back in her own clothes, she pushed open the boutique doors.

"Miss Rollins, the rain is too heavy! Wait until it stops, I can call a car for you!" Chloe called out, grabbing an umbrella and chasing after her, but the wind and rain forced her back inside. She could only watch as Iris's silhouette disappeared into the storm.

It was the first cold rain of the autumn season. Cabs were impossible to find, so Iris walked the entire way back to the penthouse she shared with Jayson, letting the icy downpour soak her to the bone. The freezing water plastered her hair to her face, but it did nothing to extinguish the burning humiliation in her chest.

She took a quick, scalding shower and collapsed into bed, her body trembling uncontrollably.

She didn't know how long she slept, but when she woke up, her head was throbbing with a blinding pain. The thermometer confirmed a dangerously high fever. She glanced at her phone. It was past eleven at night.

In a haze of sickness and a primal instinct for comfort, she dialed Jayson's number. It rang for a long time before he finally picked up.

"Jayson..." she rasped, her throat raw. "I think I have a fever... Can you come home?"

"Take some medicine then," Jayson snapped, his voice laced with irritation and impatience. "I'm busy with clients right now. Don't bother me with this!"

Just before he cut the line, a soft, familiar voice drifted through the speaker, clear as a bell.

"Jayson, I'm done washing up. It's your turn."

The chaotic fog in Iris's brain cleared instantly. The air in her lungs turned to ice.

She stared at the darkened screen of her phone, her chest tightening so painfully it felt as if a hand was crushing her heart, suffocating her. He wasn't with clients. He was with Fawn.

Alone, dizzy, and heartbroken, Iris dragged herself out of the apartment and took a cab to the emergency room. She was quickly hooked up to an IV drip, the sterile smell of the hospital doing nothing to ease her nausea.

She drifted into a restless sleep on the uncomfortable hospital bed, only to be jolted awake by a sharp, burning pain in the back of her hand.

She pressed the call button, and a young nurse rushed in, her face pale with apology as she looked at Iris's swollen hand.

"Oh my god, I am so, so sorry! I didn't realize your vein had blown. We just had a massive trauma case come in, and we're incredibly short-staffed tonight. I should have checked on you sooner."
