The Jilted Ex-Wife Is A Zillionaire Chapter 1

"Isabelle, we should get a divorce."

Isabelle Stone walked into the living room, and what greeted her was that cold remark. The exhaustion from the seventeen‑hour flight, combined with the gardenia‑scented perfume on her husband, Darius Lloyd—her most hated scent, and also the favorite scent of her husband's mistress, Daphne Mullen—left her with no extra energy to spare for heartache.

"I'm in love with Daphne," Darius said. The words were rehearsed, practiced in front of a mirror while she was still at thirty thousand feet. "This marriage… it was a mistake. We both know there was never anything real between us."

He stood, pacing, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "My family agreed. This needs to be handled quickly. Quietly."

Isabelle didn't look at him. She crossed the plush carpet, her heels silent, and picked up the thick document. Her fingers, steady and cool, flipped through the pages. Her eyes swept over the legalese with the detached efficiency of someone reviewing a quarterly earnings report.

His confession, his casual dismissal of three years of marriage—that was all it was to him.

Darius stopped pacing. He had expected tears, accusations, a scene. But the silence was spreading, sucking the air out of the room, grating on his nerves like fingernails on glass.

"Are you even listening to me?" he asked.

She was listening. She was also calculating.

The terms were an insult. A property in some suburb she'd never set foot in. One million dollars. In exchange, she would forfeit all rights to Lloyd Group and its assets.

A cold, lethal smile tugged at the corner of Isabelle's mouth.

One million dollars. Darius thought he was being generous, arrogant enough to believe he was discarding nothing more than a helpless housewife. What he didn't know was that the money she had used to secretly save his company three years ago had come from a past she had fought desperately to forget. A past she would never speak of.

She closed the folder. The soft click of the cover snapping shut echoed through the silent room like a door slamming closed.

"I agree to the divorce," she said calmly.

Darius stared. The fight drained out of him. The victory felt hollow. Unsettling.

A flicker of confusion crossed his face before hardening back into the smug mask she knew so well. He straightened his tie. "Good. That simplifies things."

He cleared his throat. "There's one more condition. For the sake of the family's reputation—and to prevent market volatility—you'll continue working at Lloyd Group for another year after the divorce is finalized." His tone carried the weight of charity, like a king granting a peasant a plot of land. "Your position is secure. It's the least I can do."

He still saw her as a charity case. A competent, grateful employee he was generously keeping on the payroll.

Isabelle lifted her head. Her eyes met his—flat and cold.

Her voice was soft. "Darius, you seem to have forgotten something."

She pushed the divorce papers back toward him. "I'm not signing this."

She rose to her feet. Her spine was straight, forged steel, utterly unyielding. "I'll be taking what's mine."

He frowned. "What do you want? More money? A million isn't enough for a woman like you?"

Greed. That was all he saw. A girl who had come from nowhere, hit the jackpot, and refused to let go.

Isabelle walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, her back to him. The lights of Manhattan glittered below, reflected in her dark eyes. A kingdom of glass and ambition. Her kingdom, whether anyone knew it or not.

"I don't want your money," she said, her voice carrying a quiet, devastating authority that cut through the vast room. "What I'm taking is the four percent of Lloyd Group shares that I own."

The air in the room went still.

The color drained from Darius's face. "What? You're insane. What shares? You don't own any shares."

She didn't turn around. The truth didn't need her to defend it. The facts didn't require an audience.

A muscle jumped in his jaw. He was looking at the woman he had been married to for three years, and a sickening, ice-cold realization was crawling down his spine.

It was like he didn't know her.

He had never really known her at all.

Isabelle reached the foyer and picked up her suitcase. "My lawyers will be in touch with yours."

She paused at the door. She lifted her hand and looked down at the ring on her finger—the diamond he had placed there three years ago, back when she'd been foolish enough to think it meant something.

With one sharp, violent tug, she wrenched the ring off her finger and hurled it onto the silver tray on the console table by the door. It struck the metal with a harsh, ringing clang—a sound like a gunshot reverberating through the penthouse.

The door clicked shut behind her, sealing Darius inside a penthouse that was no longer hers.

As the elevator doors slid closed, Isabelle's rigid shoulders finally relaxed. She exhaled a long breath—not a sigh of grief, but of profound, bone-deep relief.

The farce was over. Playing the quiet, ordinary wife had been the hardest thing she had ever done.

Darius had shattered her illusions of a normal life. It was time she woke up from them herself.

Inside the penthouse, Darius stood motionless, staring at the door.

Then, slowly, he picked up his phone.

"Daphne." His voice was steady. Unconcerned. "She wants more money, of course."

He swirled the whiskey in his glass, watching the city lights dance through the crystal. "Don’t worry. I’ll handle her."

But even as he said it, a small voice in the back of his mind whispered a question he refused to acknowledge.

Four percent. Where the hell had she gotten those shares?
