The Heiress They Didn’t Want Chapter 1

The first thing my biological father said after finding me was that I should be grateful.

I stood in the middle of the Blackwood family’s dining room, surrounded by people who shared my blood, while the girl who had stolen my identity sat beside my mother with tears in her eyes.

I had spent twenty-four years wondering what it would feel like to finally meet my real family. I never imagined I would become the unwanted daughter the moment I walked through their door.

“Don’t misunderstand us, Evelyn,” my father said, his expression hardening when he saw the hurt on my face. “Sophie has been our daughter for twenty-four years. Nothing is going to change that overnight.”

My fingers tightened around the glass in my hand.

I looked at the woman sitting beside him.

Sophie wore a pale blue dress, the kind that probably cost more than everything I owned combined. Tears rolled slowly down her cheeks.

My mother reached across the table to wipe them away, whispering something that made Sophie lean against her shoulder.

No one had touched me like that since I walked in.

“I’m not asking you to replace her,” I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt. “I’m asking you to see me.”

My father set down his fork. The sound of metal against porcelain was louder than it should have been.

“You want me to see you? Then stop making my daughter cry at her own family’s table.”

“I haven’t said a single word to her.”

“You don’t have to say anything.” He gestured at Sophie without looking at her. “Your presence is enough.”

Sophie lifted her head. Her eyes were red, but her voice came out small and careful, the voice of someone who had learned exactly how much space she was allowed to take.

“It’s not her fault,” she said. “I just… I keep thinking about what happens to me now. Twenty-four years, and I don’t know if I’m still your daughter or if I’m just the girl who was in the way.”

My mother made a sound low in her throat, something between a sob and a word, and pulled Sophie closer.

I watched the two of them and understood something I would spend the next several months trying to unlearn: I had walked into a story that already had an ending. Sophie was the wounded daughter. I was the complication.

My brother, Julian, hadn’t said a word since I arrived. He sat at the far end of the table with his jaw set, watching Sophie the way a man watches something he’s afraid of losing. When my eyes met his, he looked away first.

“I’m not trying to take anything from her,” I said again, quieter this time, because I could feel the room deciding I was the problem and I didn’t know how to stop it. “I grew up without any of this. I don’t want the house. I don’t want the company. I don’t even know what I want from any of you yet.”

“Then what are you doing here?” my father asked.

The question landed harder than he probably meant it to. Or maybe he meant it exactly that hard.

I thought about the woman who raised me, the one who worked double shifts at a diner in a town three hours from here and never once made me feel like a mistake. I thought about the DNA test results sitting in my bag, the ones that had turned my entire life into a headline in this house before I’d even finished reading them myself.

“I came because you asked me to come,” I said. “You found me. I didn’t come looking for you.”

Something shifted in my father’s face, some small crack in the wall he’d built the second I walked through the door, but Sophie spoke before he could.

“Maybe she’s right,” she said softly, dabbing at her eyes with a napkin edge that matched her dress. “Maybe I should go. If my being here is making this harder for everyone, I don’t want to stand in the way of your real family.”

“No one is saying that,” my mother said quickly, gripping Sophie’s hand like she might actually disappear. “You are not going anywhere. This is your home.”

I watched Sophie’s mouth curve, just slightly, just for a second, before she tucked the expression away and let her face crumple again.

I was the only one who saw it.

Twenty-four years of surviving on my own had taught me how to read a room the way other people read a book, and I read this one clearly: Sophie hadn’t offered to leave because she meant it. She’d offered to leave because she knew exactly what the answer would be, and she wanted everyone in this room to watch her family choose her over me, out loud, so there could be no argument about it later.

I set my glass down before my hand could start shaking.

“I should go,” I said, and this time I meant it.

My father didn’t stop me. Neither did my mother. Julian watched me stand, and for a moment I thought he might say something, but Sophie made a small sound of distress and his attention snapped back to her like a leash pulling taut.

I walked out of the Blackwood mansion the same way I’d walked in: alone.

The driver who’d brought me was waiting outside, along with a man I hadn’t been introduced to, tall, dressed in a suit that fit him like it had been made for exactly this moment. He was studying his phone and didn’t look up when the front door opened, but he lifted his head when he heard my footsteps falter on the stairs.

His eyes moved over me once, quick and assessing, the way you’d look at a stranger who didn’t belong somewhere.

“You’re the real one,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

“Depends who you ask.”

Something flickered behind his expression, curiosity, maybe, or the beginning of something he wasn’t ready to name yet. He didn’t introduce himself. He didn’t need to. I would learn his name soon enough, along with the fact that our families had already decided, long before I ever set foot in that dining room, that his future and mine were going to be tied together whether either of us wanted it or not.

But that night, all I knew was that a stranger in an expensive suit had looked at me like I was the only real thing in a house full of performances, and for reasons I couldn’t explain, that mattered more than anything my own family had said to me all evening.

Behind me, through the closed door, I could hear my mother’s voice rising in comfort, and Sophie’s soft, satisfied crying underneath it.

I got in the car without looking back.

I didn’t yet know that the invitation waiting for me at my apartment the next morning, gold-embossed, addressed to “Miss Evelyn Blackwood,” would be the beginning of the worst night of my life.
