The Rejection
The great hall pulsated with revelry, the air thick with the converging aromas of wolves and the tension of expectation. It was Lena Hart's eighteenth birthday, a serious matter; she'd spent weeks dreaming about this day. Her heart fluttered with excitement and anxiety as she pushed through the throng, her sensors nearly hyper-excited.
Then it hit her-a smell so heady that it brought her knees weak. An earthy pine combined with a fresh winter breath. Her mate. The room seemed to dissolve as she turned, looking at the origin with her gaze.
Alpha Kade Blackwood.
He stood at the entrance, square broad shoulders demanding attention and fierce gray eyes searching the throng. When his gaze fell on her, the connection was almost electric. Lena's breath caught. This was it. The moment she had dreamed of her whole life.
Her heart was racing as she took a step forward "It's you" she said with her voice trembling with appreciation and joy.
Kade's face hardened. "Me?" he asked, his voice as chilled as mid-winter. The room appeared to grow stiller as the echo of his words floated through the space.
Lena blinked, her joy clouded by confusion. "You're my mate. The Moon Goddess-"
He interrupted her with a harsh laugh that had no trace of humor. "The Moon Goddess made a mistake."
The words were a physical blow, tightening Lena's chest. "What? No, that's not possible. We're fated."
Kade stepped closer, and he towered over her. His presence should have been comforting but was oppressive instead. "I need a Luna who could strengthen my pack, someone with power, influence, and status. Not the daughter of a Beta."
Her heart shattered, however, the noise of the whispers around them shook it even more. Pack members stirred in shock and disbelief. Lena's face burned with humiliation but she wouldn't back down.
"You don't mean that," she said, breaking in a voice. "We're meant to be together. The connection-"
"The bond means nothing to me," Kade replied sharply, his tone crack like a whip. "I, Kade Blackwood, do not accept you as my mate."
The words hung in the air heavy and final. Lena's vision blurred with tears as the full weight of his rejection crushed her.
"Why?" she whispered and her voice barely audible. "Why would you do this?" was her question.
Kade's expression didn't change. "Because I'm thinking about my pack. This isn't personal, Lena. You're just... not enough."
A sharp gasp escaped her lips, as she staggered back. Throughout her life she was told the mate bond was a very pure relationship, that it was a blessing from the Moon Goddess. And now, her mate-the one that supposed to love and cherish her-had thrown her away as if she was nothing.
The room erupted with whispers but Lena didn't stick around to hear them. She was humiliated and defeated, so she turned and ran, pushing through the crowd until she burst out into the cold night. The chill bit at her skin, but it couldn't touch the icy void in her chest.
She didn't stop running until she reached the border of Silver Ridge Pack's territory. Turning back for one last glance, she whispered a vow into the wind. "I'll never come back."
And with that, Lena Hart disappeared into the night, leaving behind the only home she'd ever known. Chapter 2: The New Path
The forest was silent, only Lena's footsteps broke the silence over the frosty floor. She could feel the biting cold on her cheeks yet she kept going on mulling over Kade's words in her mind as if they were a broken record.
"Not enough."
Anger bubbled underneath the grief. How could he? The Moon Goddess had chosen her, yet Kade had thrown her away as if she meant nothing. She locked her hands into fists, nails digging into palms. She wouldn't cry. Not again.
"You'll freeze to death walking like that."
The voice startled her and she spun around. A few paces away and an older woman with silver hair and fierce eyes leaned on a staff. She looked frail but the essence of power was there.
"Who are you?" Lena demanded, her voice hoarse.
The woman's lips twitched into a smile "A friend or an enemy, depending on the choices you make" She took another step closer and her eyes roving over Lena's body from head to toe "You are hurt child. Not in body alone. Your soul is in pain"
Lena bristled. "I don't need your pity."
"Good," said the woman with a demand. "Because I'm not offering that. What I am offering is an opportunity for you to finally figure yourself out".
Lena frowned and took a step back cautiously "I don't have time for riddles"
The woman's expression softened "Child listen to me, The Moon Goddess's plans for you do not end with that rejection. If anything, they only just began. You have such power in your inside, one that could change everything"
Lena's heart missed a beat "Power?" she echoed "What do you mean?"
"Come with me" the woman said and her voice brooking any argument "If you wish to wallow in your misery then keep walking. If you wish to rise above it, follow me"
Lena paused and her instincts clashing within her. Trust was a delicate thing and she had only recently learned how quickly it could be shattered. Yet there was something in the woman's eyes, a flicker of recognition and of undeniable certainty that drew her in.
Finally she nodded "Lead the way"
The woman smiled and her expression held a trace of satisfaction "Good choice, my name is Luna Celeste. Together, we're going to discover your destiny"
Lena followed, the weight in her chest lifting just slightly. For the first time since her rejection a spark of hope flickered in the darkness.
The fire crackled in the small stone heart flickering shadows across the walls of Luna Celeste's Cabin. Lena sat in a chair well worn by time, her body rigid and her emotions a tempest of anger, confusion and something she rarely felt hope.
"Drink this" Luna Celeste said pushing a steaming mug closer to her "It will calm your mind"
Lena gazed at the mug suspiciously "How do I know you're not lying to me?"
The older woman smiled faintly "You don't but if i meant you harm, i wouldn't have dragged you out of the cold, would i?"
The Alpha's Return
His eyes maybe softened at the sight of hers but his tone remained defensive "I came to speak"
Lena crossed her arms, the barrier between them as tangible as the moonlight. "Talk? Now you want to talk? After rejecting me in front of everyone and tossing me aside like I was nothing?"
The edge of her voice was enough to make the warriors behind Kade shift uncomfortably, but he didn't budge.
"I made a mistake" he admitted with his voice low but resolute "I thought that pushing you away was the right thing to do for my pack and the alliance but I couldn't have been more wrong"
Lena's laughter was bitter and it sliced through the night like a blade "Wrong?, That was an understatement. You didn't just reject me Kade, you made me feel less than myself. You shattered me"
Kade took a step closer, but she raised her hand, halting him in his tracks. Her wolves growled softly, a warning that resonated in the air.
"I deserve that" Kade replied with his voice thick with remorse "But I'm here now because there's something bigger than us at stake. Elias is building an army Lena. He's planning to attack both of our packs. We need to unite to stop him"
Lena's jaw tightened and her thoughts raced. She had anticipated that Elias would try something but hearing Kade admit it brought forth a strong sensation of fear and anger.
The question 'why should I help you' was asked by her as her voice rose. 'You didn't care about me neither my future when you did what it took to make your decision. Why should I care about yours now?'
Kade's face hardened, guilt flickering into frustration. "This is not about me, Lena. It's about our people-yours and mine. If Elias wins, then he will never be safe to anyone."
"And whose fault is that?", Lena asked back. "You were the Alpha who was so preoccupied by striving to be perfect, and you couldn't see what was directly in front of you. And now you want me to clean up your mess?"
The tension in the air was stormy, with voices climbing as emotions spilled over.
"I made a mistake, Lena," Kade said, almost pleading with his tone. "But I'm trying to set things right. I need your help. Your strength."
"My strength?" Lena's eyes flashed with anger. "You called me weak. You said I wasn't good enough to be your Luna. And now you want me?" She stepped closer, her voice a tremor of rage and pain together. "Do you even know what you've done to me, Kade? You shattered me. I put myself back together though. I got stronger without you."
Kade's shoulder slumped, for the very moment he had been struck by the gravity of her words. "I know," he replied in a whisper. "I see that now, and I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you if you're allowed me to do so. But right now we don't have time for that. Elias is coming, Lena. If we don' t join hands together, then everything both of us has fought for is going to be ruined."
Lena's heart pounded at the realization of what he had just said. She hated that he was right. She hated it that even after everything, she still cared about what happened to him, to his pack and their people.
Turning to the rogues assembled behind her, she could read their faces which showed anger, distrust and uncertainty. Still standing in front of the assembled people she asked "What do you think?" She asked, her voice still clear amid the gathering.
"Shall we help him? Shall we take up arms with the man who once forsook me?"
The rogues looked at one another with whispers spreading through the mob. At last, Garrick stepped out of the crowd with a frown on his face. "Elias threatens all of us" he stated. "If we don't stand together, we will fall apart"
Lena turned back to Kade with a solidifying determination "It doesn't mean I forgive you" she said and her tone chillingly crisp "But I'll fight-for my people, not you"
Kade nodded and a glimmer of hope sparked in his eyes "That's all I can ask for"
As the camp began to stir with preparations, Lena felt a knot of tension settle in her chest. The battle tomorrow would test everything she had built, everything she believed in. And standing beside the man who had formerly broken her was going to be the hardest test of all.
Chapter 8: The Tipping Point
The moon was high in the night sky and poured its silvery light over the dark trees. The best alliance of Lena's rogues with Kade's warriors was uneasy. Wolves from both packs shot each other suspicious looks while preparing for the fight ahead, while anxiety awaited them. Lena and Kade stood in the middle of the camp, nearly pacing each other as their voices sliced through the silence of the night.
"Your warriors don't trust us" said Lena and her frustration lacing her voice "And to be honest, I can't blame them. For decades, you have treated the rogues as outcasts"
Kade met her gaze, and his expression was unreadable. "Trust isn't built in a night, Lena. They've seen the rogues' actions-what Elias has done. You can't expect them to forget that just because we have this little truce."
Her eyes narrowed "This isn't about forgetting, it's about survival. If they can't see that maybe they shouldn't be here"
Kade's jaw tightened and his tone slipped into a growl, low and menacing "These warriors are risking their lives to stand beside you. Don't question their loyalty"
Lena stepped closer, her voice rising. "Don't question mine. My wolves are just as important as yours, Kade. Or do you still see us as beneath you?"
The accusation struck hard and Kade's eyes flickered with guilt. "That's not what I meant"
"Then what do you mean?" Lena pressed and her voice shaking with repressed emotion "Because from where I stand, it still feels as if you're looking down on us-on me"
Silence that followed was so deep that it was louder than any sound. Kade opened his mouth to answer but a shrill whistle came between him and the air, then Garrick's urgent shout ensued.
"Incoming!"
Lena turned around as the figures emerged from the treeline, growls echoing through the camp. Elias's rogues charged behind her, bloodlust shining in their eyes. Order broke as wolves shifted and fought, snarls mixing with the crunch of breaking jaws.
Kade faced his warriors, shouting orders. "Perimeter formation! Guard the pack!"
Lena didn't wait for the command. She turned half-way through her stride, her wolf leaping into the melee. Even as she dropped the first rogue, her claws raked him across the side.
The Enemy's Shadow
The battlefield simmered with tension even after the last blow was struck. Wolves from both sides nursed wounds, growls lingering in the air like static. Lena shifted back into her human form, chest rising and falling, anger pulsing with every breath.
Kade's warriors formed a wary semi-circle behind him, while the rogues gathered close around Lena. No one seemed willing to look away from the treeline where Elias Voss had disappeared moments earlier after taunting them with the promise of more bloodshed.
Garrick wiped blood from his jaw and muttered, "That bastard was testing our defense. He wanted to see how fast we respond."
"Yes," Lena said sharply. "And he got exactly what he came for."
Kade glanced at her, but she didn't acknowledge him. Her eyes stayed on the dark path Elias had retreated into.
"We need to move," she announced. "This place is compromised. He knows our formation now."
Kade stepped forward. "We can regroup and fortify it."
"No," Lena countered. "We leave. Tonight."
Kade's brows pulled together. "You want to abandon the only ground we have? That is reckless."
Lena turned to him fully, her expression cold. "What is reckless is staying in a camp he can walk into whenever he wants."
"We can handle him," Kade said.
"Your warriors barely handled the rogues he sent," she shot back. "And these were not his elite fighters."
Murmurs rippled among the wolves. Garrick nodded in agreement.
Kade's jaw tensed. "Lena, we cannot move an entire camp in the middle of the night. We have injured wolves."
"Then we carry them."
"You are not the only one responsible for these wolves."
Lena leaned closer, lowering her voice so only he could hear the next part. "You asked for my help. So let me lead where I have the experience."
He searched her eyes for a long moment, but she didn't look away.
Finally Kade exhaled. "Fine. Tell us where we are going then."
Lena straightened. "The cliffs."
Garrick blinked. "The cliffs?"
She nodded. "There is a passage below it. Former rogues used it as a shelter. It is narrow which prevents mass attacks, and it keeps the pack contained behind a single entrance. We can defend that."
Kade rubbed a hand down his face. "A cave... this is not exactly the strategy of an Alpha leading thousands."
"It is the strategy of someone who understands ambushes," Lena snapped. "Elias cannot use his numbers against us if he cannot pour them through."
Kade paused as the logic settled in. He turned to his warriors. "Prepare the wounded. Pack whatever we can carry."
The warriors scattered at once.
Lena walked toward her group of rogues, and they straightened as she approached.
"We need to be faster than them," she told them plainly. "If Elias sends another force, we may not have the strength to hold them off."
A man from her group, Tobias, stepped forward. "We follow your lead. Whatever you decide."
Lena gave a tight nod. "Good."
As they set the camp into motion, Kade approached Lena again. He seemed hesitant which was unusual for him.
"You fought well," he said quietly.
She didn't even look at him. "It is what I have always done."
"That is not what I meant."
"I know what you meant," she replied evenly. "Save it."
Kade inhaled deeply. "Lena... you may not believe me but I am trying."
"You rejected me," she said flatly. "I am not required to applaud your attempt at redemption."
He winced. "I deserve that."
She finally met his eyes. "You deserve more than that."
Before he could respond, a piercing howl echoed from the forest. All wolves went silent immediately.
Garrick rushed to Lena's side. "Scouts from the western perimeter," he said.
Kade turned, instantly alert. "Trouble?"
A second howl came, sharper and filled with panic.
"Yes," Garrick replied.
Lena didn't wait. She shifted instantly, her wolf racing toward the sound with speed that surprised even her. Determination fueled her steps. Behind her, she heard multiple wolves following, including Kade.
Branches snapped under her paws as she ran. The moon glowed overhead like a vigilant witness. The forest grew darker, thicker, and she realized the scouts were deeper in than usual.
A faint growl reached her ears. Then another. The sound of struggle.
She burst through the underbrush and saw one of her scouts pinned beneath a massive rogue wolf. Two more roamed around them, pacing in tight circles.
Lena charged, slamming into the first rogue with a force that sent him sprawling. The second lunged at her but she twisted, catching him with her jaws. The taste of blood filled her mouth.
Suddenly Kade's black wolf appeared beside her, taking down the third attacker with brutal precision.
When the last rogue fell, the injured scout attempted to stand. Lena shifted back into human form and rushed to him.
"What happened?" she asked.
The scout clutched his side. "We saw movement... three rogues... then something else... something big. It passed between the trees."
"Elias?" Kade asked.
The scout shook his head. "No... different. Taller. I couldn't see clearly but... it wasn't a wolf."
Lena and Kade stared at each other.
Then Garrick ran up to them, panting. "You need to see this."
They followed him, weaving through the trees until they reached a clearing. There, carved into a massive boulder, was a symbol. Freshly engraved. The rocks still crumbled from the force of the carving.
It was a crescent moon split down the center by a jagged line.
Kade frowned. "That looks like..."
Lena finished for him. "The mark of the Forsaken. Elias's first pack."
Garrick tilted his head. "I thought that pack disappeared years ago."
"So did everyone," Lena replied. "But this symbol means only one thing. Elias is resurrecting it."
Kade turned to her slowly. "Then we are not dealing with only rogues."
"No," she said. "Elias is building something much larger."
Before they could react, a sharp whistle cut through the air. Lena looked at the direction it came from.
"Tobias," she muttered. "That is his signal."
They ran back toward the camp. Lena's anxiety spiked with every step. The closer they got, the more uneasy she felt. The trees thinned and the clearing opened before them.
But the sight that greeted them made Lena stop cold.
The camp was chaos again.
Wolves were running. Fires burned in patches. Supplies scattered across the clearing as if a whirlwind had torn through.
And in the center, surrounded by her rogues, stood a man.
Tall. Cloaked. Smiling.
Elias.
He stood alone, arms raised slightly as if welcoming them.
"Hello, Lena," he called out. "I was beginning to think you would never return."
Kade bristled beside her and growled, "Get away from my warriors."
Elias looked amused. "Your warriors? Interesting claim. I recall some of them dying under your leadership in the last war."
Kade lunged forward but Lena grabbed his arm before he shifted.
"No," she whispered. "This is exactly what he wants."
Elias's smile widened. "Smart girl."
"Why are you here?" Lena demanded. "I thought you preferred to hide behind your army."
"Oh, Lena. I did not come to fight," he said with surprising calm. "I came to deliver a message."
Kade took a step forward. "Say it and get out."
Elias laughed softly. "Very well. The message is simple."
He pointed one finger directly at Lena.
"You are the reason I declared this war."
The world seemed to still.
"What?" Lena breathed.
"You," Elias repeated. "Your power. Your bloodline. Your connection to her."
Kade's eyes narrowed. "To who?"
Elias tilted his head.
"The Moon Goddess."
The air turned heavy. The wolves around them fell silent.
Lena felt her pulse stutter. "What are you talking about?"
Elias's smile vanished, replaced by something colder.
"You are the key to the greatest power our kind has ever known. And I intend to claim it."
Lena's stomach tightened. "Over my dead body."
Elias gave a small shrug. "That can be arranged."
Kade shifted closer to Lena, placing himself protectively between her and Elias. "You will not touch her."
Elias raised his hands in mock surrender. "Not yet."
Then his gaze slid toward the forest behind Lena.
"You might want to check on your missing wolves."
Lena froze. "What missing wolves?"
Elias stepped back. "The ones I borrowed."
"What did you do?" she demanded.
His eyes gleamed with triumph. "Go look."
Before anyone could reach him, Elias shifted into a massive shadowy wolf and vanished into the trees.
Kade growled and gave chase, but Lena grabbed him again. "No. We have to see what he meant."
Her rogues and Kade's warriors quickly counted their numbers.
Garrick's face went pale. "Lena... Sage is missing."
Lena's heart dropped. "My brother?"
Garrick nodded. "He was here. Now he's gone."
Kade spun towards Lena, eyes wide. "He took Sage."
Lena's breath caught in her chest.
And for the first time since she left her pack, true fear gripped her.
"We need to find him," she whispered.
Kade nodded. "We will."
Lena shook her head. "No. We will not."
Everyone stared at her.
She clenched her fists.
"I will."
The last thing she saw was a trail of blood leading into the dark forest.
The Moon Goddess's mark glowed faintly under the moonlight.
Something terrible was waiting at the end of that trail.
And Lena stepped forward.
