The Gift I Bought Him Had Another Woman’s Name Chapter 1

I spent six months of my salary buying my fiancé, Dominic Bellandi, the latest Apple gift set for his birthday. Every paycheck from the small accounting position his family had arranged for me at one of their waterfront holding companies went toward it, dollar by dollar, until the box finally arrived at the coastal house I shared with him in the city. But when I opened it, running my thumb along the engraved case, I noticed the initials. His were correct. Mine were wrong.

My thumb found the inside of my ring finger, pressing against the warm band of the betrothal ring that had never quite fit. I wanted to call the store about the mistake, to have them correct the engraving before anyone else saw it, but Dominic stopped me. He rolled his signet ring once against his knuckle and told me it wasn't easy for the owner to run a business, that I should let it slide and stop being dramatic. His voice carried the casual authority of a man who had grown up giving orders in rooms where no one talked back. I let it go. I always let it go.

Then, on the day of our alliance ceremony, while making a toast before a ballroom filled with capos, consiglieri, silent partners, and judges whose loyalty the Bellandi Family kept on retainer, he accidentally said her name instead of mine. The crystal chandeliers seemed to hold their light a beat too long. Every eye turned to me, the hundred-odd guests waiting in the ringing silence for my outburst, for some spectacle worthy of the whisper networks that ran through every Family in the territory.

But I didn't explode. Instead, I calmly took off the ring, walked across the polished marble floor toward the woman seated at the head table as though she already belonged there, and held it out to her. "This ring was always a bit loose. Guess it was never really meant for me," I said calmly, forcing a smile. "I'm giving it back to its rightful owner." I forced the smile wider, feeling my jaw ache with the effort. "You two really are a perfect match. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness."

The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard. Even the soldiers stationed along the ballroom walls seemed to hold their breath, hands frozen at their sides, waiting for someone of rank to tell them what this moment meant.

But that was the end. And the beginning.

……

"Don't be mad at Dominic," my father said as he prepared to leave, his voice thick with concern. He sat at the small kitchen table in the apartment Dominic kept in the city, the one I'd tried to make feel like a home with curtains from the old house and a ceramic vase my mother had painted years ago. His hands worked the old linen handkerchief he always carried, folding it into precise squares, pressing the edges flat with deliberate care. I knew what the folding meant. The pain was surging again, and he would sooner die than let me see the tremor. "A man being busy shows he has the ability to provide. You're about to marry him, so it's time to learn about compromise and forgiveness."

He rambled on, giving me advice that felt empty, the kind of wisdom a father offers when he knows the road ahead is longer than the time he has left. "Take care of yourself, and don't forget to eat on time. If you're in struggle or need money, remember that we're only one call away…"

My mother stood by, quietly wiping her tears, her back turned to me as she struggled to say goodbye. I saw her hand drift to the edge of the kitchen counter and smooth the cloth there flat with both palms, pressing it down as though the neatness of the fabric could hold everything together. I begged them to stay longer, but they insisted on returning home to the coastal enclave, back to the house on the bluff where the fishing boats came in at dawn and the Bellandi name was something you heard only in passing, carried on the same wind as church bells. It wasn't until the bus shrank into a tiny dot on the horizon that I let the tears fall.

Just days before, I had discovered my father's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The doctor at the private clinic the Family's territory connections had arranged spoke in careful, measured tones, the same way consiglieri delivered bad news, and I understood now why my parents had traveled so far, twisting through the winding coastal roads from our enclave just to meet my fiancé before it was too late. They feared they wouldn't see me married or even at the engagement gathering.
