The Fireworks of Love Will Gradually Fade Chapter 1

On the night of the class beauty's birthday party, everything seemed perfect—until I stepped out to take a phone call. When I returned, I found my boyfriend and the birthday girl dancing closely together, their bodies too familiar, too comfortable. My classmates' eyes all darted toward me, anticipating my anger, my reaction.

But instead, I smiled coolly and said, “The room is ready for you, go quickly.”

The tension in the room thickened. My boyfriend, clearly taken aback, frowned, “Why are you angry? Aren’t you right?”

Behind my calm exterior, an entirely different plan started unfolding—a journey to confront betrayal and self-worth, revealing truths not just about my relationship, but about myself and the people I’ve surrounded myself with.

——

Three days have passed since I caught Bryan and Larissa dancing together at her birthday party.

I've replayed the scene countless times, trying to figure out where I went wrong. Was it me? Was it something I said or did? But deep down, I knew the truth. The last remnants of warmth I felt for Bryan had finally extinguished, replaced by a cold clarity.

Strangely, Bryan acted as if nothing had changed. This morning, he even handed me two concert tickets, attempting to smooth things over like he always does. For the past two years, his pattern had been painfully predictable: the deeper the wound, the bigger the gesture. A concert ticket, a dinner, an apology—always too late, never enough.

I used to worry, plagued by fear that Bryan couldn't live without me. Every argument ended the same way: I'd apologize, smooth things over and bury my feelings. His rare moments of kindness kept me tethered to a relationship that was already lost. All it took was a gentle word from him and I’d be ready to forgive everything.

But now, as I looked at the tickets on the table, a sense of calm washes over me. Even though they’re tickets to see my favorite singer, something I once dreamed of doing with Bryan, the excitement was gone. It's clear now: Bryan never wanted to share that joy with me. He never liked loud places or concerts when it was just the two of us, but he never hesitated when Larissa invited him to a night out or a show. He’d spend hours getting ready for her, while I was just the afterthought.

Larissa always flaunted their outings on Instagram, as if she was the real girlfriend and I was nothing but a mistake. It used to hurt so much that I couldn’t eat or sleep, my anger manifesting in blisters on my lips. Bryan, of course, said I was overreacting, that I was too sensitive, too fragile. But I wasn’t fragile—I was just in love with the wrong person.

Tonight, something has shifted inside me. Bryan didn’t show up to our planned evening together, but for the first time, I didn’t call or text him. I just picked up one of the concert tickets and left, alone. It was pouring rain, but even the downpour couldn't dampen the energy of the concert. The warmth of the crowd lit a fire in me that I hadn’t felt in years.

By some stroke of luck, I was selected to sing with my favorite singer on stage. For the first time in so long, I felt alive. It was as if, in making the decision to let go of the person I once was, good fortune had finally found me.

After the concert, I stopped by a store to grab a bottle of water. That’s when I saw them—Larissa and Bryan, stumbling out of a bar, smelling of alcohol. Larissa smirked, her eyes glinting with that familiar malice.

“You came looking for Bryan in the rain? How pathetic,” she sneered. “He’s having a great time with me. I won’t let anything happen to him.”

"Selena. Today..."

Bryan opened his mouth, but before he could speak, I beat him to it.

“There’s no need to explain,” I said, my voice steady. “It’s still early—go ahead, enjoy the rest of your night.”

It wasn't the first time Bryan had ditched me for Larissa, but tonight, for the first time, I didn’t care. I wasn’t hurt or angry. I just turned and walked away.

As I stepped into the drizzle, the rain mixed with my tears, washing away years of humiliation.

This was it—my breaking point, but also my rebirth. No longer tied to the toxic love I had tried so hard to maintain.

For the first time in a long while, I was free.
